I am posting this as a mask only thread. I think this is important as it shows how poorly masks work. At least the ones we see used. What worries me most is the symbolic attempts to deal with this stuff. Vaccines have been shown by the numbers to work. Masks have not. From day one they have been a public showing of our attempt to control it, but clearly they do very little to help. If things are dangerous enough, we should not be pretending masks do much of anything.

Haha, I was in Vegas July 2020 and two of my buddies had those masks with the valve to make it easier to breathe. I could not believe they counted as masks at all. Those were later "banned" but it shows you how illogical a lot of this is.

Hmmm that's the same doctor that said mRNA vaccines make spike proteins that travel to your brain and other organs destroying them and killing you.

And he may be right. But that’s much more theoretical. This video is pretty basic and is consistent with all the medical practice up to covid.

Some of you guys are just completely obsessing on covid and are just relentlessly beating the topic to death. What need is being satisfied by beating a dead horse? The OCD thinking/behavior is alive and well; but becoming disturbing. I do understand and appreciate that many have good intentions and mean well. But Blast Away in your need to argue.

Because people care about it? Why do people go on this message board everyday and talk about the same FSU players every single day?

It’s important to me. It’s important to me to be as well versed as possible. And that means listening to and reading things I might disagree with. But I feel that it helps my understanding of what is taking place. I could be on the other board obsessing about conference realignment or QB reps. This seems like time better spent. I understand if you might feel differently.

It is a pretty big and important topic in the world right now.

Please understand that's not my point at all. Certainly it should be the most important topic for all of us. As it is for me and for any reasonable and rational adult. I''m just coming from the context for the need of a few to argue at nauseam just for the sake of arguing. I hear ya and certainly agree with you.

Sorry, the masks are a joke, especially for the kids. Some of my employees have young children in school….they tell stories of the kids trading masks at school, which, alone, shows how silly and ineffective this campaign really is. If anyone thinks a classroom of young children will properly and conscientiously wear their masks all day, they really don’t know much about children.

With few exceptions, this is theater, designed to make people feel better or to make a moral/social statement.

Agree, the wisdom of wearing these face masks do more harm than good. Children being in a classroom with runny noses and their own saliva have the equivalent of a Petri dish of bacteria strapped on their faces all day. Masks should actually be changed repeatedly. Never considered the “sharing”….ugh. Adults have been known to ignore proper hygiene by not keeping cloth masks washed properly and repeatedly wearing a paper mask. That can’t be healthy, along with the questions about inhaling your own carbon dioxide for extended periods. I wear them where required but don’t trust their viability. My doctor says to be diligent about washing hands all day and keep hand cleaner in your car. Another win, win for Big Pharma.

Since when do surgical or cloth masks trap carbon dioxide? OR teams wear masks for hours upon hours and don't seem to ever enter a state of hypoxia.

Results

Among 50 adult volunteers (median age 33 years; 32% with a co-morbidity), there were no episodes of hypoxemia or hypercarbia (0%; 95% confidence interval 0–1.9%). In paired comparisons, there were no statistically significant differences in either CO2 or SpO2 between baseline measurements without a mask and those while wearing either kind of mask mask, both at rest and after walking briskly for ten minutes.

Interpretation

The risk of pathologic gas exchange impairment with cloth masks and surgical masks is near-zero in the general adult population.

It is very sad. Masks not working seems to be a common belief. No matter what argument you make, or facts you show, so many people won't wear them, and also refuse to get the vaccine. But they are quick to show up at the ER begging for treatment, even though they took no responsibility themselves.

by all means wear a mask to somewhat help limit your cough and sneeze mess from spreading quite as far but by the same token you shouldn't be out exposing yourself to people if you're all sicked up.

anything less than a true form fitting N95 respirator isn't going to do jack squat in evading aerosol spread.

Masks don't work. Vaccine surely mitigates impact of virus, but masks are a waste of time.
You got Covid. Any idea where you caught it? Almost every person I know believes they contracted it in a maskless environment. I’m sure we can both pull out studies that contradict the other. But my experiences don’t align with your opinion on masks.

the FDA's own guidance says get an N95 respirator and use it only one time.

While a surgical mask may be effective in blocking splashes and large-particle droplets, a face mask, by design, does not filter or block very small particles in the air that may be transmitted by coughs, sneezes, or certain medical procedures. Surgical masks also do not provide complete protection from germs and other contaminants because of the loose fit between the surface of the mask and your face.

Yes. I have seen studies that say they work and that they don’t work. It comes down to what you believe and who you trust. You are not going to convince anyone with a strong belief system by throwing up a study. I do wonder why people cover their mouths and noses when they cough/sneeze, since even a mask doesn’t work. It seems common sense to me that a mask would reduce the spread of germs. I don’t see why this is so hotly debated. I guess people really just don’t like wearing them. But if I’m in a crowded area I throw on two masks just in case.

...I think it satisfies some folks need to feel they are “doing something” and taking it all more “seriously” than the next person
I'm not sure how you reached that conclusion. It's not a competition. No one likes wearing a mask. They do it because they hope it does something. They think there might be a chance it may help if they wear one. What's wrong with that? Don't be so judgemental about other people's personal choices that don't affect you 👍

the masks are certainly accomplishing the similar result as the palm of your hand or fold of your arm. not sure which is more messy!

Works both ways D...

Never said it didn't, friend. I've said multiple times that I support people's personal decision to not wear masks and not get vaccinated. I'm not the one being unreasonable.

I will say I wore a mask for work (real estate appraiser) and still got COVID. It wasn't terrible, nor was it good. My wife got COVID around the same time and got through it much better/quicker than me. She then fought off brain cancer shortly after & is under going chemo therapy for the next year. She wears a mask at work for precautions mostly related to illnesses beyond COVID. If they were so effective, the nurses wouldn't be wearing respirators & N95s underneath their surgical mask. Part of me thinks them layering the surgical mask is a promotion that they work.

I won't get a vaccine as I don't want to carry the viral load. I just deal with it.

mRNA vaccines don't give you any form of the virus. I hope you can reconsider if that is your only fear. If not, I can try to help answer any questions you may have about the vaccine, either through PMs or in this thread.

My fear is my wife... if I am exposed & show no signs of illness, I can still infect her. If I am getting sick, I know to stay away. I hope that makes sense.

Of course, and I understand your concern. There is a lot of misinformation floating around about what each vaccine does and doesn't do. I work for Pfizer and would be happy to pass along any info that I can regarding vaccination. I would never want to pressure anyone to get vaccinated, I only want to inform. If you ever feel the need, run some questions by me. I wish the best for you and your family.

I appreciate it. I think once we're over this hurdle, we'll consider it. I'm not all for it but will say I know this entire thing is polarized to the nth degree. As with everything in life, the truth is always somewhere in the middle.

I assure you it was massless because I never ever wear one.

And anyone knowing “where” they got it is a guess. Finding that they have it and finding soemeone in their universe with covid does not actually establish causation. The “contact tracing” done in the last 18 months is a total waste of time and provides all kinds of false relationships. The reality is when you have a pandemic this broad, it’s simply not possible to really know who gets what where and when. And the family cases that are strongest don’t establish anything because there are a myriad other issues that confound that analysis.

Nothing establishes masks work even if used properly. And they aren’t. I was at RDS tonight and many were masked (by the way FSU as of today isn’t pushing the “expected” mask use). And it was an adult crowd. But I watched out of curiosity and it’s amazing how few use them right. People all over taking them off. Moving under noses. Lifting to talk. Touching them all over. Few fit close to right. It’s just a sky hook.

wishing you and your wife the very, very best. it's a heck of a journey that i'd never want to repeat but it can be beat.
