Because I’m really really bummed that he died yesterday. REALLY bummed!! He was such a huge influence in my teen years. He also wrote the songs for Rush! Any posters from the big 8 drum line on here that were familiar with the professor of the drums?? Or anyone else!!! Cancer sucks!!!

Im sorry for the loss but he wasnt the gratest drummer. Many of you are too young to have seen John Bonham Keith Moon Ginger Baker or Buddy Rich

Actually I have heard of all of them and Peart brought a technical, complex innovation to rock music that is legendary. And don’t even put Buddy Rich in the same category as Peart. Please

Led Zeppelin The Who and Cream far better bands than Rush in all due respect.

I don't have the musical acumen or ear to make an argument on this subject but this is an interesting video on this topic about drumming.

We can argue all day about the goat but if anyone thinks Neil Peart is not in that discussion they don't know music. The guy was an absolute legend and wrote all the music for the band as well. RIP.

I'm a drummer. Was in the Lincoln high drum line and Jazz band. Grew up listening to Rush and going to concerts. Hands down the two most talented and technically precise drummers are Neil Peart and Dave Weckyl. Not to mention Neil being one of the great lyricists in all of music. Tom Sawyer's drum piece is one of the most difficult to do. If anyone is better than Peart its Dave Weckyl.

I am a drummer as well. Was in Choctaws band snare line in fort Walton beach. GO BIG GREEN!!. Anyway, grew up listening to Rush. I agree with you but you also have to put Thomas Lang in that discussion. An absolute monster behind a kit. Go Noles!!!

He is the greatest rock drummer ever and FSU is the greatest university on the planet. So, we got that going for us. :)
He is a top drummer but I would put Ginger Baker and John Bonham ahead. There are actually quite a few drummers that are incredible. I think it is a matter of personal taste and your generation.
My mind is not for rent.

lOl. And some of us are too old and lack any sort of actual music knowledge to make informed judgments.

there are guys with more technical skill than Peart in rock drumming now. The only one on your list who has more technical skill than Peart, arguably, is Rich, but it’s a different genre and rich didn’t innovate progressive ock from the ether. Peart did. Moon was a hack. Bonham was a solid rock drummer. Ginger Baker was an innovator. Across moon, bonham, and Baker, Baker is the more influential player. Buddy rich was absolutely fantastic and also not a rock drummer.

peart was a huge influence on rock drumming in general, the development of concept albums, progressive rock, progressive metal and infinite variations therein.

I love zepplin but bonham isn’t in this discussion.

Weckyl is great, but a completely different genre. Not a fair comparison.

Tom Sawyer is not hard to play, in my opinion. i played it this morning, actually. And, I’m very out of practice. La villa strangliato, Xanadu, yyz (exit stage left version), yes. Those are hard to play.

Tom Sawyer is hard because of the constant 16th notes on the hi hat among other reasons. And I doubt you nailed the last 60 seconds of that song bro. No offense

not offended. You don’t know me. I spent a lot of time in high school learning rush songs, transcribing then and playing them over and over.... like many drummers my age (45 now). I made snare line for a dci group. Ive played off and on in bands for most of my life. The chops required for Tom Sawyer are not a challenging thing to me And I am not amongst the greatest drummers of all time. Playing phantom frenzy or tornado at the requisite tempos. No, I can’t do that right now.

Congrats on dci. I only got to high school level. 1st chair snare in a 20 person drum line. I still play in a band with some guys today. If you can play Tom Sawyer all the way through and it NOT BE CHALLENGING then you are on a different level than me and I play a lot. Congrats

speed is only one component of drumming. Tom Sawyer is fun to play. If you told me I had to nail the the entire moving pictures album note for note, I could probably do that in a month or two. If you told me I had to nail Dave weckyl’s master plan nite for note, I think I’d have to re dedicate myself to drums for a long while and maybe eventually I could do it. Maybe. Probably not.

You should check out Thomas Lang if your not familiar. He’s basically a freak. Not really something anyone can mimic. He makes Neil Peart seem average and that’s saying a lot

crazy talk. Cream was a jam band, essentially. The Who isn’t in the same talent tier across the board. Zeppelin is basically blues rock. Great band. Good players, but Paige sounds like he played with broken fingers. Not as clean as Lifeson. Song writing wise rush is far more interesting than those bands in my opinion.

Had you seen those bands in their prime your opinion would be completely different. Its no accident that it took many years for Rush to be admitted to the rock Hall of Fame.while these bands were admitted at first eligability

no. It’s not an accident. Rush was nerdy. Those other bands were not. I’m sorry, there’s just no universe where Cream is better at music than rush. Cream wasn’t together very long. They were very good individual musicians. But, again, basically a jam band. None of the three were individually better players than any of the guys in rush. And, their song writing is basically non existent comparatively.
