I love Jimbo and think he's a great man and great ambassador. Very glad we have him. However if I really take a look back at his strengths this is what I see
QB coaching- obviously it's hard to knock what he's accomplished here at least in the terms of getting guys to the NFL. Ponder had the mental makeup for Jimbo and they fit perfectly. EJ couldn't really handle Jimbos intensity and I think it affected him. I believe Jimbo has gotten better but don't believe his yelling and screaming works for a QB. Maybe a DC but not QBs. Jameis was obviously special so I'm not sure if any coach could mess that up. So far 2 of 3 QBs have failed pretty bad in the NFL but I think Jameis will be great
Playcalling- this is the area I've never been a Jimbo fan. I think it's too vanilla and predictable. The worst part is it's also so "complicated" that we have to sit our most talented young players every year because they can't grasp it. While all the other programs plug and play they're superstar freshman we shelter them until they meet some level of expertise. Also I watch week after week of other teams running simple crosses and screens with great effect. Completing at least a couple wide open deep routes. Teams who don't have 5 stars receivers on top of 5 stars. Even Jameis had to consistently squeeze balls into tight windows on
Hiring coaches - started out strong, but due to great success and sec money those coaches got poached away. Since then we have hired underwhelming coach after coach. Bill miller? Charles jelly? Who are these guys. Not only is there on field product poor but their recruiting is very subpar considering the logo they wear on their shirt
Recruting- tough to argue much but it's definitely tapering off. A lot of misses on the DL and Lb recently Though
Motivation of players - not sure he is very good at this. I think he gets a little too worked up for a HC. Look at the truly successful head coaches. Les miles, urban Meyer, Pete Carroll and even Saban. They aren't losing their cool every game running out on the field with that panicked look on their face. The year we won it all we had Jameis, Joyner, telvin and Los who lead that team and got them fired up. Not sure coaches had much to do with that and it's obvious now because they play flat.
The biggest thing I notice on TC is the unflinching faith in everything Jimbo does. Like he's never wrong or if he does it there must be a great reason for it, even if the product looks poor or goes against convential wisdom
