Junk Foods

I do not believe in feeling guilty about any food, ever.

When my local Taco Bell was running a lunch special on Doritos tacos and Fritos burritos, I was there everyday. The grilled cheese burrito with flamin hot cheeotos is also awesome.
I just cant do it. I broke down yesterday and got a 3 pack of crunchy tacos because of all the junk food talk. Made two quick trips to the toilet that afternoon. Luckily I can mute the zoom meetings.

I really do like chocolate. But I like other sweets as much if not more. Like carrot cake.
Or Lemon bars.
I like eating things that are sweet and spicy and full of protein. Call it an insatiable craving.

I may have 1 or 2 hot dogs in a year, and it’s almost always a slaw dog in the Varsity Club during football season.
The rest of the year I will avoid them. 😦
Thank you for sharing your culinary intakes. Is the Varsity Club the home of projectile hurling? Any connection to them there dawgs? Cones are often all around the cans. Talk about your conebread.

In-N-Out is my favorite. Fatburger, HiHo Cheeseburger, Main Chick hot chicken, and Jack in the Box are in regular rotation. Occasionally, I will hit up Taco Bell or Popeyes, if I get a specific craving. When I am in the south, I always stop at Waffle House and try to get to a Krystal and Whataburger. Culver's is a must stop whenever I see one.
Waffle House used to be a guilty pleasure too. But I suspect its days are numbered since covid. I have tried to eat a two different locations and both times the places were a hot mess with few employees who were obviously in the weeds, no managers you could identify, and more people standing at the door than eating at the tables. Both times we left without ordering. I fully understand the patience required to eat there but it seems like the chain has run its course and dyeing on the vine. It is a shame too. The art of hearing you server yell your order at the cook across the restaurant with an accent from the depts of Appalachia is lost forever.

Its not just Waffle House. Any foray into dining out is a chore with the endless excuses of short staff and low supplies most of the time. When people are working most of them cant spell cat or make change without their phone. Its really a sad state and covid provided a almost unflappable excuse like diarrhea and sick leave.

I was recently in Durham, NC and visited Waffle House a couple of times. It was a great meal, as always.
Ive hit a few recently in Raleigh, Savannah and Tallahassee and they were fine. Toothless waitresses and all.

The Popeyes near work was like watching someone slowly drown. Since covid they never opened their dining room. Then they had issues filling orders in the drive through. Somehow they lost the ability to process credit cards. Then they put up a sign that you needed exact change to order, did not know covid created change shortages. Finally before they went under them limited store hours to lunch only. It was a shame for they make good fast food chicken.

You were in the research triangle! One can not get an authentic Waffle House experience in a uppity town like that.
You don’t have to go far there to get authentic. Derm has it’s own version of authentic.

Careful. @NoleinATL will deride you for that opinion.
I like the odds. I use to stop at a stand right on the edge on an Interstate on ramp in Chi town. Cops were always running people off.
I would walk over a few blocks from an auction house I did business with. Suckers were so good. My son still talks about the experience years later.

I honestly do not understand how someone can eat a hotdog. In theory, they sound delicious, being served with chili over the top or all the other variations, I could just eat the toppings in those fancy buns. I just can not stand the texture or taste of hotdogs no matter how they are prepared or how fancy, they all look like they will taste like a can of Vienna sausages.

I do, I love traditional southern smoked sausages like Registers, delicious.

My distaste is specifically for sausages like hotdogs, bologna, etc because of the emulsification and the texture that creates.
You cant beat a good hot dog or bologna sandwich for that matter. In Germany they have a Bologna style meat loaf called Leberkase. Get a slice with a fried egg and grilled potatoes. You cant go wrong with spam too.

As as someone posted earlier My biggest weakness is boiled peanuts followed by hot Krispy Kreme's. They're increasingly hard to find but the smaller Valencia variety of peanuts is preffered to the bigger goobers.

Wait...what's wrong with Vienna sausages. I've loved those my entire life!

Now for the important question. How do you pronounce the brand name of that product? I have always said Vee-enna like the city in Austria. A lot of people around here say Vie-eenna.

Keep in mind, I do live in the sticks.

I've heard both, and a lot of people say Vie enny as well.

Curious as to how you feel about deviled ham?

Looks like I have finally located the people who keep the whole chicken in a can companies in business

If I come across pickled eggs or those sausages in a jar in a good dive bar I will get them. Gotta be with a really crappy draft beer though like Schlitz.

Yeah you have.
I was in Mexico way back when you could go there without getting your head cut off and stopped at a taco stand on the way back across the border after a night of drinking. I got the taco and asked the guy what it was, he said "gatto" but I heard "cabrito". As I loaded the taco up with the diarrhea inducing toppings I kept thinking how good this goat taco was going to be. About halfway through I realized he said cat and not goat. I finished the taco and the second one anyway.

That makes sense. Registers is really good, but I slightly prefer Conecuh.

Hands down the best sausage I’ve ever had anywhere is the Jalapeño Cheese sausages from Kreuz Market in Lockhart Texas. The second best is the original recipe from 1900 (just 85% beef, 15% pork plus salt, black pepper and cayenne). And you can buy 9 lbs of it for only $60. That’s perfect for a large tailgate or stockpiling in the meat freezer at home. They are miles better than the semi local Registers and Conecuh.

Most of the other Central Texas ”Hot Guts” are fantastic including those that ship like Salt Lick, Black’s, Snow’s and Southside Market in Elgin. But if you’re paying for shipping, I’d go with the best which in my experience has been Kreuz Market.

YES!
Kreuz Market is great and I’m also a “Yuuuuge” fan of The Salt Lick in Driftwood.
