What's up, folks?
We're scheduled to start the 11:30 a.m. press conferences here in about 20 minutes. Though it might be a little longer depending on when the Zoom call actually starts.
Let's hope for a little less drama today, and a little more football, am I right?
Hope everyone is doing well. Norvell should be the first to speak. Not sure which players we'll be getting but we'll keep you posted.
See you in a few.
... It's 11:41 and we're still waiting. Just didn't want you to think I had forgotten about you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Good work day today. ... We tried to put our guys in challenging situations." Says he thought the defense was dominant today, was really flying around after the ball. "I'm really excited about the potential of that group." ... Says he can see the potential of offense. And that special teams is getting a lot of good work. Tomorrow will be a scrimmage in the stadium. "This will be our first time putting them in that situation and it will be a good chance to see how they respond."
On QBs: "You've definitely seen growth in all of them. The two freshmen are coming along. You can tell it's a lot of information for them, but they are absolutely embracing the process. ... It will be their first live college scrimmage ... so we'll get a great sense of where they are. The scrimmages play a big role, but it will be an all-inclusive result in how we evaluate these guys." But says scrimmages do matter.
On Blackman throwing motion: "Every quarterback is going to have a little bit of their own style in their release." Says he wants them to be comfortable. .... He says the change in his throwing motion, a slight change, has really helped.
On Brownlee and Woodie: "Those guys have both done a really nice job. ... They are putting all they have on the field." Says they're both putting in good work on special teams and are being all-inclusive players. "They've definitely been a couple of bright spots."
Says D.J. Lundy has been getting a little bit of playing time/looks at FB. Armani Kerr, too. "We've got a couple of other potential options. That's going to be a big part of this next week. We're going to try to start looking to institute that position more."
On his scrimmages. Says tomorrow will be very situational. Coming out, sudden change, short field, base series. Will probably try to throw a two-minute situation in there. Maybe overtime. ... One of the things they have to do is incorporate sideline adjustments. "We try to build in a little bit of time on both sides of the ball." Down to the detail of where the guys stand. Starters get a chair, the backup needs to be behind him. "We just want people to get comfort in what that looks like." ... Says there will be another scrimmage in camp that goes more "in game flow, but I don't want to miss out on any opportunity for a situation."
On reaching out to talk to team after yesterday: "I can tell you that this team is on the same page. And that's where I'll leave it."
Norvell says he definitely embraces two-sport athletes in recruiting. Says FSU has a great reputation in that. Says he wants to make sure they're maximizing their college careers.
On Kaindoh: "Josh is very, very intelligent. Seeing the maturity of what he has, doesn't always say a whole lot, but he's always watching. ... He's got a lot of respect for his teammates, a lot of respect for his coaches. ... Josh had a big-time play today, and it was just a great effort play. ... He is giving everything he has, and I'm really, really pleased with what I've seen from him and I think he's got a really high ceiling."
"Building that confidence in the concepts. We're being very multiple with them. It's big with our evaluations to see what our guys do best." Says theyre looking at multiple concepts, multiple sets, ... "But I don't want to paralyze their minds by overwhelming them with information." ... "I want to see these guys play fast." Says next week will be the second wave of installation. "I want to see them go out and process that information and play fast tomorrow night."
And that's a wrap for Norvell. I believe he was asked at the beginning of the press conference if he had talked to Warren Thompson or the other receivers since leaving practice field yesterday. His answer was short and quick and I barely heard it. But apparently the answer was simple: "No."
So do with that what you will.
Looks like DBs coach Marcus Woodson is up next:
Overall thoughts on secondary: "Big picture wise, we've done a really good job as far as coming to work and just trying to compete and get better. ... I do like the way we've competed and made plays on the field, but we've still got a long way to go in a short period of time. As far as the newcomers, he says two transfers have "done a phenomenal job of ... making plays."
On impact of transfers: "The experience part definitely stands out. Those guys are really good in pressure situations, because they've been in that with the experience. ... "They learn quick. You tell them once and they've got it. It's been a really smooth transition in terms of picking up and how we do it."
On rotating DBs: "We will definitely work as a unit this year. I've got more depth with this secondary than I've ever experienced. We're three deep at certain positions that we feel good about. ... I'm excited about the depth. Obviously competition brings out the best in you."
On scrimmage situation: "A lot of guys look really good with just helmets on. ... I'm anxious to see how the guys respond in putting it all together. Doak Campbell tomorrow, full pad practice, under the lights ... you learn a lot about your players." Says they'll know more about where they stand tomorrow night than they do right now.
On Asante and Hamsah: "I'm asking them to improve on: Leadership. ... Their expectations from a player-to-player standpoint. On good teams, coaches lead. On great teams, players lead. And just continuing to get those guys to take ownership in the room. It's their group. It's not my group."
On relationship with Fuller: "It's been a great experience. Adam is a young, sharp, up and coming, great defensive coordinator, future head coach. I've learned a lot from him in a short amount of time. ... It's been really good working hand in hand with him every day."
On Travis Jay: "The talent is not an issue. Travis is probably one of the most gifted young men I've ever coached. ... Let's be great at the things that require no talent. ... He's a kid that can play any position in the secondary. .. he will definitely be an impact player for us (maybe on special teams as well). ... I like where he's at, but again, he's still got a lot of fundamental things he's got to clean up." Said he expects him to be much better in Game 9 than Game 1.
On Lars-Woodbey: "He fits the buck position that we're playing him at. His strength is his physicality, so we'll be getting him involved in the running game as well. ....I'm continuing to challenge him to be more of a vocal leader as well ... arguably the most consistent player in the room this year."
And that's a wrap for Woodson.
Cam McDonald is up next.
On his improvement: "The standard that they bring to practice, to the facility every day, has forced everybody to adapt. I would just say I'm just another one of the players that has adapted to the standard on a daily basis." Credits Coach Storms with his physical development.
On TE role in this offense: "The demands of the TE in this offense is more than I've ever done at this point in my career. ... Not just in the run game but the passing game as well. ... The demands of the position are very, very high and I love it." Says TEs are point of attack on a lot of running plays.
On Jordan Wilson: "He's a big body dude that can also run routes and stretch the field vertically." Says he's learned a lot from him already.
On Coach Thomson: "He helps you create advantages in being able to block players that are bigger than you." Says he's very demanding, but a great coach. "Off the field he's a good dude, easy to talk to, and he talks to us about life and not just football as well." But on the field, very demanding.
On his thoughts on the QB: "The quarterback room as a whole has been very, very impressive. ... Coach Dillingham brings a certain energy that's infectious for the whole offense." So he knows the quarterbacks feed off that as well. Says he's very impressed with how they've played so far.
On depth of secondary: "That's encouraging. The term "irons sharpens Iron" is really apparent there. When you face great DBs in practice ... I love it. And it makes Saturdays that much easier, because i'm going against elite level competition every single day in practice. I love it."
On Wyatt Rector: "I think Wyatt is going to be a shocker for everybody this year at the tight end position. ... He's actually impressed a lot of the team, he's proven a lot to the team that he's able to play tight end and play it at a high level." Says he's excited for Rector to be able to show what he can do.
On the scrimmage on Saturday night: Says he's excited what he still needs to work on. Says that's more important than any numbers he can put up. "The focus is still one percent. To go out there and try to get 1 percent better. ... Just focusing on the 1 percent and taking that next step. That's what I'm excited."
On using social media: "I feel like guys have to police themselves more. And really sit back and think about what you want to say on social media ... everybody has their own right to use their own voice, I don't think we're going to try to silence people ... anything you're willing to say you just have to make sure you're willing to stand behind it."
And that's a wrap for Cam McDonald. Another just really, really sharp dude. Love listening to that dude talk.
That's a wrap for interviews for today. We'll be back tomorrow night around 8:30 p.m. (prime time!!!!) to update you guys on the scrimmage under the lights in Doak. Be sure to have a great weekend. Be responsible. Be a leader. And go make things happen. This is your time to shine.
