I realize this is a pretty specific subset of Locker Roomers, but there's got to be a few of you in here.

Last week, they released a new Marriott Rewards Premier Visa. Much better benefits. Best of all though, depending on when you signed up for your original card, they'll give you 10,000 bonus points for upgrading.

Short list of new perks on the new one vs the old card:
  • Free annual night at Category 7 property now instead of the former Category 5 award
  • 6 points per dollar spent at Marriott properties vs 5 points before
  • 2 points per dollar on everything else vs 1 point per dollar spent on most things
  • Still $95/year. No increase.
You gotta call the number on the back of your card and ask for the upgrade though.

Consider yourselves informed.

I will check into this. Thanks for the info.

so for the Prince Murat types...what's an example of a Cat 7 property??
The points are by demand so they don't make too much sense. Renaissance in vegas is a 7. The Ritz in Sarasota is a 4.

The point system is changing in August after the merger with SPG is complete.

Gave up my Marriott Visa years ago. Too many cards offering 100k type bonuses to sit on that Marriott card for long.

Thanks for heads up. I still have the Marriott card from back when I used to travel extensively for work. I keep meaning to get something new but maybe I’ll stick around for this. Category 7 is generally a pretty nice hotel whereas there were times I’ve never been able to use the Category 5.

No problem.

And yeah, there's always a risk that they revise the hotels to new categories at any time, but as it stands now, a 7 is way nicer than a 5. I'm happy about that change.

I never understood the idea of paying a fee to have a credit card. I've got a good old fashioned MasterCard that I pay off in full every month. At the end of the year (just before Christmas), I cash in my reward points for $300-500 in gift cards. Not a whole lot to it.
