Jimbo Fisher post-practice interview with the media:
Hours after Jimbo Fisher's press conference, Florida State opened spring practice on Monday afternoon.
Arguably the biggest news from Day 1 came before the Seminoles took the field. Fisher said during his press conference junior cornerback Tarvarus McFadden would miss spring practice after having surgery to repair a torn labrum.
Now for the news:
>FSU enters spring camp needing to address several areas with offensive line among the most pressing. FSU already lost Roderick Johnson to the NFL Draft and Kareem Are to graduation while Alec Eberle and Landon Dickerson will miss spring camp while recovering from injuries. Fisher also said part-time starter Wilson Bell was graduating and will transfer to another program. The Seminoles ran with three groups during open practice.
>Ethan Frith, Josh Ball and Jauan Williams got work in at left tackle. Derrick Kelly and Abdul Bello received time at left guard. Baveon Johnson, Corey Martinez and Andrew Boselli worked at center while Cole Minshew, Mike Arnold and Greg Turnage each saw some time at right guard. Rick Leonard and Brock Ruble also took some reps at right tackle. Fisher said it was good to have depth on the offensive line given FSU hasn't always had depth at offensive line. He was asked about Johnson and said there were some good moments and some not-so-good ones from what he saw at practice. Fisher said he'd have to review today's practice tape before providing a further assessment.
>Freshman quarterback Bailey Hockman, who is one of seven early enrollees, showed off some of his arm strength during warmups. He was throwing with Deondre Francois and both of them were throwing tight, consistent spirals with quite a bit of power in each pass.
>Every offensive and defensive lineman wore padded helmet covers during open practice. The soft shell covers are designed to help reduce the amount of head injuries. Fisher said the shells will be used to help combat concussions. He said, "Lot of people started going to them, looking at them so we're going to see how they do."
>Fisher was also asked about Derwin James possibly being a returner. James was returning balls thrown at him during Monday's practice. Fisher said, "He has the skill set to do anything. He returned in high school and was a great guy. You put the ball in the best guys with the best hands who have the ability to run with it. There aren't many positions he can't play."
>Fisher also said it was "huge" to get former assistant Dameyune Craig back on staff. Fisher said he and Craig have been in contact over the years and was happy to get another coach familiar with his pro-style offense.
