Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif defeated UC Santa Barbara’s Gianluca Brunkow and Pablo Masjuan in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon to move on to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship. Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif equal Vahid Mirzadeh and Connor Smith back in 2011 for the deepest doubles championship run in program history.

“One of the keys to the match was that we were in every single game on the return, we broke twice in the first set and three times in the second,” FSU coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “We did a great job of playing aggressive and when we faced adversity we responded right away.”

The FSU pair held their serve through the first few games before going on a tear, winning four straight games to close out the first set in dominant 6-2 fashion.

The momentum carried into the second set as Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif led 4-2 midway through the set. Despite the opposing pair tying the set score at 4-4, the FSU duo cranked it a notch further, winning the last five points in the match and serving out to seal the victory.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif’s exceptional run of form midway through the match saw an unprecedented run of winning eight of nine games. The No. 13 pair in the nation earned their eighth nationally ranked victory of the season and claimed All-American accolades by reaching the quarterfinal round.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif advance to the quarterfinals and will face No. 40 Jacob Bullard and Murphy Cassone of Arizona State on Thursday afternoon.
