New FUTBOL thread since the pinned one is broken...

Manch, you're right. I get confused, as FoxSports 1 and NBCSN are right beside each other on my cable carrier.

Gotta say, though, Villa's match was much more entertaining than The Arsenal's today.

and MB is no slouch, they have been tough all year, beating City in the FA Cup and losing 14-13 in PK's to Liverpool in the League Cup.

Well, maybe, but their manager said this week they're more focused on getting promoted for next season, and they played like it today. Without a brilliant performance by their keeper, this could have been 5-0 or 6-0.

And it must be said, MB hit the woodwork in extra time; 'twould have been a meaningless goal, but still....

Wow, Ronny's nutmeg was sweet! Literally made the guy fall down. LOL

Suarez's goal is just nuts. Thanks for posting that, Manch.

Really, Liecester v Villa? Why Fox, WHY?
I know and they left off Liverpool/Crystal Palace yesterday.

United plays at Preston Monday afternoon, I think the quarters draw is just before the match, as Liverpool, Arsenal and United will all hope to avoid each other.
Liverpool vs. Blackburn
Villa vs. West Brom
Bradford vs. Reading
United vs. Arsenal

I'm assuming United beat Preston of course. No jinx intend at all. Nope.

Pretty fortuitous draw for Liverpool. Avoid all 4 EPL teams while the two other big boys have to take each other on. Liverpool has a 67% chance to go through to the final having played AFC Wimbledon, Bolton, Crystal Palace, Blackburn, and some other mid-table Championship or bottom table EPL side to get there.

DC, that's what makes it so great, the luck of the draw. For about 4-5 years running, United drew teams like Liverpool, City, Chelsea right off the bat and this year, they have drawn some weaker teams, but haven't taken advantage of that yet.

If United gets past Preston, at least they get Arsenal at home, where Arse has struggled.

On paper, it looks to be a Liverpool/Arse-United final, if they aren't drawn together in the semis.

So a clear dive from Shrek, a foul on Felani, and a interference call on shrek that could of been called just as easily as not. Brilliant.

Well can't complain about the draw so can't have everything. Excellent chance for a fairytale ending for Stevie on his birthday. Wouldn't mind watching Arsenal play scum twice.

Had been worried Putin would cause match to be cancelled! As is, it's been moved to Lviv rather that in Donetsk! It's actually closer for Bayern than it is for Shahktar! Should make for a strange atmosphere I think. Not sure how many Donetsk fans will make the trip?

Tim, Bayern is just rolling along as expected! What's up with them dropping a few matches this year?

Anyone see Ibra just f*ck with that reporter? They just showed it on the Fox1 pregame!

I love the Champions League.
As a Chelsea fan, I feel extremely fortunate to get the draw and the away goal. The Blues were outplayed big time in the 2nd half. Could have easily been 3-1 PSG.

Yeah Psg looked afraid early but got confident a little too late, like the home crowd.
Cortois was superb.
I don't get why Luiz is worth much, offensively he kept stalling attacks and on defense he's a foul machine.

Bayern scores chocked me I though Alonso red was soft but I'm sure they'll win 4-0 home leg so no reason to panic.,

Real today, cr7 in worst Real slump since stay there, last year Real had to run through bundesliga to win CL in knockout so Schalke a familiar foe.

Porto should be able to draw Basel away

I agree 100% that the 2nd yellow for Alonso was soft. That said, he has to smarter than that when already on a yellow. All in all the referee left a lot to be desired. The Donetsk player(Costa?) was more of a red with the elbow at Ribery but he only got the yellow there? Strange. I kind of expected that physical(hack) style from them to disrupt Bayern and it worked. That and the fact that Pep elected to play without a true Striker and left Lewa on the bench.

Looking forward to Real v Schalke. I am a big Buli watcher obviously but I cannot stand Schalke!!! They are down to their #3 in goal for this match also as the top 2 choices are injured. Last year Real boat raced them and I expect the same this time around. It won't be a close aggregate.

Back to FCB! I am concerned for the return leg and the fact that Pep insists on playing with the lineup for the sake of playing with it. Lahm will be back by March 11 and that will help for sure. If we can score early I like our chances! The longer it goes scoreless the worse things get from our perspective.

Cr7 and Real with a tenth straight CL away win but they're far from great right now. Midfield continues to struggle without modric or james.
I expect Bale to go back to England this summer, that price tag is looking silly at this point.

Porto pulls out an away tie.

Looking forward to City vs Barca but I'll be pretty surprised if barca doesn't sweep both legs

The scheduling of the Qatar World Cup in November/December is just plain out disgusting.

I believe Germany, the US or Australia could host the Cup on a minutes notice. The friggin Cup was bought, now by it back and move it, or the European teams should start a boycott, right now.

The 22/23' Euro seasons will be conflicted, as well as possibly the 2021 Confederations Cup (also bought and paid for by Qatar).

Manch,
Yup it's all corruption and all the euro leagues and Euro championship that will lose billions off the winter World Cup, good! They were silent after USA and few others complained serves them right. Let fifa try to pay their way out of it perhaps this will finally cost Blatter his job at next election and there will be time to fix that corrupt cup.
They made their bed

What a bunch of BS. At the very least, the Euro teams should send something similar to their Olympics teams if something doesn't change. Hell, they basically run FIFA...Give Qatar their money back and tell them to stick it.

Europe needs to do something, there's no way they start their season in June when the CL finals is done mid-May.

Top teams like Chelsea, City, United and Liverpool have a decent amount of their players on international rosters and this would deplete these teams pretty bad. Barca and Real are basically Spain's international team.

This can't be played in November/December. Europe will boycott and possibly hold their tourney come time.

I am absolutely dumbfounded that this was even an idea, never mind FIFA actually following through.

I generally use Wiki has a starting reference point or to find a quick "fact or two", but here is a page dedicated to the controversies that are current or will arise.

Can you believe that some estimates have Qatar spending $138 BILLION before it's all over to host the Cup? Can you say "fair play rule"?

f*ck Qatar, I'm pissed

The corruption goes right to the top. It was rumored that a vote for Qatar was going anywhere between $1-$5 million, so paying off an entire federation and their respective heads $20-$25 million, is a drop in $138 billion budget, and we wonder while oil/gas is going to $3 a gallon again, up from a recent $1.92 a gallon.

I can't say it enough, there is no way that a World Cup can run November through December.

Must be a slow news day for footie when the big news is that the British press is killing Mario Balotelli for taking the ball from Jordan Henderson and taking the PK against Besiktas.

Who gives a sh!t! I'm pretty sure that Liverpool is capable of decision making when it comes to taking PK's when Gerrard is not on the pitch. Give it a rest, and I thought the Boston press could really nitpick!

Such a crazy day today in the BPL. Balotelli subs in for the Peasants and immediately strikes the winning goal. They deserve each other.

The Arsenal strolls past Palace, and suddenly find themselves in 3rd place, thanks to Swans sweeping United for the first time in their history.

And then, Chelsea v. Burnley. If this had happened this way in the US, there'd already be a Congressional investigation underway. Burnley had 2 clear fouls/hand balls that should have resulted in a PK that weren't called. Then, a 3rd foul that should have resulted in an immediate red was also ignored. The frustrated Chav player got up and pushed him, and HE got the straight red. Down a man, Chelsea almost immediately gave up the tying goal late in the match. Jose looked incendiary on the sideline. I'll bet his presser was fascinating. He should take the fine and call out the center for his handling of this match. I'm no Chelsea fan, but this was atrocious, perhaps the worst I've ever seen. Howard Webb on his best "What can I do to help Sir Alex" days wasn't this wretched.

Arsenal didn't stroll at all. Palace, thankfully, has the worst finishers I've ever seen. Otherwise that could have easily been an L for the Goons. Plus the PK call we got was a bad one, though it was hard to see in real-time.

Chambers and Monreal were exposed all day on the flanks. I'm not a fan of either of those two at all.

A W is a W though.

2-1 to the Arsenal!

Les, I was only able to follow it online on ESPN Boot Room today, and the commentary was that we basically parked the bus after halftime, and Palace scored with seconds left in the game. Perhaps "strolled" was hyperbole, but sounded like a fairly easy win. Wenger in his presser didn't seem unusually ruffled; when he's OK with it, then I am. But if you watched in live, then you had a better perspective than I.

As you said, a win is a win, especially on the road and in a Derby, and passing the Red Devils is always pleasing to me.

Les, while I agree it wasn't a stroll, I disagree on the PK. Welbeck was fouled for sure and it took place right on the line of the box. I believe all but 1 commentator said it was the correct call. Arsenal should have also had another goal as Ozil was not offside as called...and he put the ball in the back of the net.

Chambers needs to be in the middle as a CB if he is playing. Unfortunately Bellerin wasn't at full strength and they would rather him be healthy for Monaco this week. I agree on Monreal, he is rubbish and should not be featured very often.

I think they parked the bus at halftime and could have won more easily if they wanted to. Heck, Alexis missed a golden opportunity in the second half which would have made it 3-0, and made things a bit easier.

The one thing that hurt us the most was the condition of the field. CP must be used to that crap because they didn't seem to have nearly as many issues as Arsenal had. It looked like most of the Gunners had on ice skates and were gliding around on an ice rink instead of a football pitch.

A win is a win though, so I am happy today. It is better than both Chelski & ManU today.

City seem to be the chic pick. They're all sorts of confident based on the articles I've read. Barca slips up at home vs Malaga. Could be ripe for the pickins.

Just hope it's a match that lives up to the hype. I don't want to see a blowout in either direction.

Dortmund seem to finally be awakening from their season long slumber recently. They've looked better attacking but still show the occasional lapse at the back! I do think the City v Barca tie will be close over the 2 legs! Going to be a couple of good matches today I think! Atletico and Arsenal tomorrow!
