No More Day Light Savings in Florida

You're right. This is why they just need to do away with this country wide. It creates confusion. At some point, just have the whole country move their clocks forward an hour in March and never touch them again.

If Florida goes to DST year round, then the panhandle people in central time will be the same time as Georgia during the winter months. When Georgia moves the clocks back in November, Pensacola would stay the same because they would not move back from DST.

Basically the whole state of Florida will stay on DST for the entire year. During the DST months, Georgia will spring forward, while Pensacola will already be at DST. However, they will still be in central time, so an hour behind.

However, does that now mean that Georgia would be an hour behind the rest of Florida during the winter months? This would be after Georgia falls back and Florida stays on DST. That is going to cause all sorts of confusion for people that might commute from Thomasville for work.

Right Now (Standard Time): Pensacola - Noon; Tally - 1 PM; Atlanta - 1PM
DST (March): Clocks spring forward: Pensacola - 1 PM; Tally - 2 PM; Atlanta - 2 PM

Fall Back (November): Pensacola stays on DST - 1 PM; Tally stays on DST - 2 PM; Atlanta falls back - 1 PM

Now you have me totally confused. I thought Florida was going to do away with DST and stay on Standard time. Why would they do away with Standard time and stay on DST forever? If that is the case, then yes I believe you are correct and part of the year Georgia will actually be 1 hour behind Tally. That makes no sense.

Where's the problem. Arizona does that now.

Not really a problem. Just causes confusion for people not used to something that has been one way for pretty much their entire lives.

I am sure there are plenty of people who commute from Thomasville to Tallahassee for work, and perhaps from Mobile/Pensacola and vice versa. People not used to this now have to potentially factor in a time change for a 30 mile drive.

If this proves successful and is allowed by the feds, I can see other states potentially jumping on board. This is why I think this should be a federal decision. Either have everyone on standard time, or just move the clocks ahead an hour once and for all and never change the clocks again.

Never really understood why Arizona is the only state in the continental US not to observe DST.

Florida is not affected to the degree the northeastern states are, but if you've ever lived up there you know how completely gloomy and depressing it is in the winter to see it begin getting dark at 4 PM. I like the idea of year round DST.

If anything, and I'm really not for any change, just make it what time it ACTUALLY is in relation to the rest of the planet and leave it alone. What I really wish is that Captain Dipshit worried about the time and trees in Sarasota and left the panhandle alone.

As a parent, I've advocated for this for years. Now that I work in International Business it makes even more sense.

Hopefully a state as important as Florida making that change would push other states to consider it quickly. But yes, I'm for it.

Europe has DST as well. To make it more confusing, they set the clocks on different dates than the US.

Yes, I have an employee in Europe. There are a few weeks every year where we're off by 2 hours more than normal. It's always a frustrating 4 weeks as we re-align.

Hmmm... feels like earlier in this thread, the comment was made that there was an amendment to the legislation keeping Panhandle on CTZ and continuing to observe DST. Too lazy to look upward though.
They would move forward with the whole state, but would remain on CDT. Tallahassee would be on EDT year round. Just the hour difference.

My wife and I talk about this every time the time change hits. We do like the DST best but changing it would be a pain for me. I work for a California company and it’s already hard enough getting off at a normal hour. This would put me 4 hours behind half the year.

i do business across states and require orders to come in by 2:30 for me to ship same day. This means in the winter months it would be for 1:30all other eastern states and 10:30am west coast. This will mess things up.

Also for sports fan, that means all winter sports would start 1 hour later, such as Saturday Night College football and the National Championship Game. The NCAA, NFL, NBA, Etc will all stay on the national clock and Florida would be 1 hour later for them to start.

I am all in for it but it should be as a country and not just Florida by itself.

Lots of confusion for people on this. It’s simple, panhandle will be in the Eastern time zone now and Florida will not roll back our clocks in the fall.

No, the bill that passed the House does not change the time zone for the panhandle and the Senate bill has been amended to keep time zones current. Two Senators on the last committee that represent people in central time insisted on the change to move the bill through committee.

There’s no way folks in the Panhandle were going to agree to switch to Eastern time. It’s a “don’t tread on me” thing. Plus, it would mean getting up an hour earlier.

My bad on the time zone change. Didn't know the original bill was amended.

You are one of the few. I'd give my left leg almost to be on central time. It is one of the bigger downfalls to being in Tallahassee vs. Panama City.

I hate eastern time zone, I wish we were all on central. I hate worse living in one and working in another though. I could easily adapt to eastern since I dont own a watch, lol.

I would love to move to Eastern except that it would potentially make people who commute from Alabama or vice versa in this area difficult by both not changing times and moving them forward an hour. They could have been off by 2 hours at some times.

The Bill passed the Florida House 103 - 11.

Senate Version, as amended.

577-03112-18 2018858c2
1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to daylight saving time; providing a
3 short title; providing legislative intent regarding
4 the State of Florida and its political subdivisions
5 observing daylight saving time year-round under
6 certain conditions; providing an effective date.
7
8 WHEREAS, the State of Florida is known as the “Sunshine
9 State,” and
10 WHEREAS, as the “Sunshine State,” Florida should be kept
11 sunny year-round, NOW, THEREFORE,

14
15 Section 1. (1) This section may be cited as the “Sunshine
16 Protection Act.”
17 (2) If the United States Congress amends 15 U.S.C. s. 260a
18 to authorize states to observe daylight saving time year-round,
19 it is the intent of the Legislature that daylight saving time
20 shall be the year-round standard time of the entire state and
21 all of its political subdivisions.

Why do you even care what time zone, you don't even have any reason to acknowledge that time exists.

On the whole time change thing, I had fun 30 years ago trying to explain the general concept to an old fisherman on a tropical island in Central America. He was pretty certain that I was pulling his leg.

Tallahassee is on the western edge of the ET Zone. It’s not realistic to expect Pensacola folks (or others) to buy into that. I transverse both time zones and can’t relie on electronic devices to keep up. Hate it but going all ET is a non starter with me.
