Parents with kids in Highschool in Florida

My daughter is in AP classes and she is getting As and Bs. She gets As in her honors classes. She sucks at testing and is terrified of the AP exam. The pressure the kids are under to pass the test is enormous. I told her just get a good grade, worry about the test score later. The grade will still count and she will still dual enroll for her senior year. There will be a college somewhere that will want her (preferably in Tallahassee whose colors are garnet and gold)

@NoleGrad83 so I have what will be my daughter's 9th grade classes. Like I said before, she's a very good student, but has to work hard in math. So she tends to get all A's and a B in math. I want her to be challenged but not be overwhelmed. What do you think about a schedule like this ?
AICE General Papers; Spanish 1; Honors Geometry; Honors Biology; Chorus; Culinary Arts; and AICE CL Studies( I guess a Social Studies)

Sounds like a good balance of classes. She should be able to handle the load as I found geometry to be the easiest math but some aren't as visual learners. There is an AICE social studies class our school uses that is essentially based on 20th century history. Its just been added within the last two years so I'm not as familiar with its content. Your daughter's class could be this class.

Hope she does well. We get started with students next Tuesday.

Thanks and I appreciate it. It should be interesting.

@NoleGrad83 or anyone ,So my daughter went through the first half of the year and did pretty well in those classes. What are they looking at HPA or GPA or both? Thanks.

Depending on the district, but it may be at the state level, AICE courses are usually on a 5.0 scale and 'honors' classes are on a 4.5 scale. Others are the standard 4.0 scale.

So are colleges looking at the HPA or the GPA?

I'll be honest but I'm guessing HPA has to do with the amount of honors classes? Please excuse my ignorance but that is a guidance counselor question. As for what colleges are looking for; balanced schedule, good grades, reasonable amount of extra-curricular activities and your activities outside of school, i.e. job, volunteer hours and such.

Once I get what you're looking at with HPA I can probably give you a better idea. Again, excuse my ignorance.

No I am the ignorant one. I just see a GPA and a HPA on her report card.

One may refer to weighted and unweighted. If that's the case, then colleges will look at both along with everything else.

My niece just got into IB at St. Pete High. I have no idea what that really means. Is it that great? Better than a private school? What does she get out of it and what is the education like? Is it just schools for test?
Very rigorous my daughter got her IB diploma and went into college with 35hrs of credit. Its college level work and its a program you have to do community service hours. It does basically limit the elective courses you can take. Lots and Lots of home work.

My daughter is a junior and received a book from FSU during their school visit. They look at weighted GPA because the average GPAs of freshmen accepted was 3.8-4.2. Hard to have a 4.2 without honors and AP classes.

On another note, she was advised to take a math class this SUMMER at the local community college to start her dual enrollment, and then continue her senior year with 2 other college courses. From a financial standpoint, I am all for it. More college credit credit for free now means she can take less credits later and I can use the refund on her sorority dues.o_O
From a parent standpoint....why can't the kids just have fun anymore?

Very good stuff. Thanks.

Ok thanks so much.

No worries. I am also of the school that students should have more fun while in high school but I'm afraid parents are putting too much pressure on their kids to get the college credit early. I also understand 'free' as far as college is concerned and believe me, I had my kids take full advantage of every opportunity they could but kids don't socialize without a phone and have little experience in personal relationships.
