Sister moving to Tallahassee

This is why south Florida sucks. Taxes and insurance are double down here.

To be fair, not all of NE Tally is nice anymore either. It's not a 100% safe thing to say north of 10 and east of 27 is good. We drove by our old house (we moved out 20 years ago) in Killearn Lakes off of Chickasaw a few years ago and that area was pretty rough. Not a slum exactly, but flag lots in every backyard, very crowded and mostly run down houses. Also, Chiles High has had some pretty serious drug issues, though I think most high schools do.

But in general, yes, the NE is the better suburb type part of Tallahassee. Midtown is a pretty hot area as well, and more diverse for sure.

I worked for the old KPI back in the mid-70's and was the onsite agent at Killearn Lakes when it first opened. Worked with buyers and builders, and my husband and I bought a home there from a builder who was having some financial issues. Most homes sold for between $40-$49K at the time. It was a beautiful place back then but I drove through there last year with my daughter and was absolutely disheartened to see how run down it was. People had boats, RV's and campers in the front yard, and some even had vehicles parked in the yard.
Not judging and some people choose to have those things, but it's no longer representative of what a community that the old Killearn guys had in mind.

Yes, we moved in in 1993 and out in early 2000, it was our first home, paid something like $72K for it. I think the flag lots really hurt that area, I remember when we bought our house the realtor checked for us and swore up and down that there was no flag lot behind us. There wasn't one there when we sold the house but when we drove through a year or so ago we noticed there is one there now. They also opened up the cul-de-sac we lived on and connected it to the heavily developed property next door which was a sod farm when we lived there.

The neighborhood currently feels nothing like the place we lived and we are glad we got out when we did. It's unfortunate. Progress I guess?

Sadly, there are areas within Killearn Lakes, Killearn Acres, and even Killearn Estates that are not aging well. And if the proposed extension of Shamrock to Mahan ever gets approved and built, Killearn Estates will have pretty major east-west connector running right through it.

School zones: Swift Creek, Montford, and Deerlake.

Swift Creek and Montfort are both middle schools. I lived in Buck Lake for years and my son went to Buck Lake Elementary, Swift Creek and he's at Lincoln now

FWIW I have a friend who lives SE of town near Tram Road. He works for the gummint and is happy with his commute/situation. It's really pretty out there.

It’s one lot right behind another with a shared driveway. So the houses are two deep on the same road. Your neighbor drives through your driveway and lives in your backyard, pretty much. Makes the area feel really crowded.
There’s plenty of those in Killearn Lakes. Not much for privacy.
