So I moved to Hattiesburg, MS

I have no idea, it was about 25 years ago. I recall going by the Southern Miss campus & think it was in that general area.

We were driving from somewhere near Gatlinburg, headed to Nawlins (we'd gone to a home game in Tally one weekend, went up to the mountains for a few days, then were headed to New Orleans the following weekend for a game against Tulane).

Just had a meeting with a professor that suggested that place for dinner tonight. I'm going to try it.

Let me know what you think. May I suggesst the pasta jumbalaya. It has chicken, shrimp, crawfish and andouille sausage and mushrooms in a delish cream sauce. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Another choice would be the shrimp and grits.

The rich (for Hattiesburg) in laws got back to me and said that Leatha's BBQ, Crescent City, Newks, Half Shell Oyster House, Peter's Po Boys, Front Porch, Shipley Do-nuts (they'd better have one called a sprocket), and Vicki's.

I've been to only the Hburg Newks (which was like all other Newks, mediocre subs, salads and pizza at a too high for the quality price), but I have been to the Half Shell Oyster bar in Gulfport, Mobile and esp Biloxi many times. At least those locations are a solid C for Ceptable. They'll never make you forget the amazing places in Apalachicola, NYC, Seattle, OBX, etc..., but they're on par with the better ones in Nonpanhandle and Big Bend Florida and would be right near the top in places like Jax, Tampa, Orlando, Miami etc... Just like those nonpandle an big bend oyster houses, I think Half Shell is overpriced for only 4 star oysters, but I've paid just as much for the same quality in Asheville and actually rec it to visitors there (Oysterhouse Brewing Company). So would I rec it? Yeah probably. Don't get your hopes too high and get some steamed royal reds (their best offering at least on the coast) to go with the oysters and you'll be happy enough.

They said they much prefer the food at their other places which is basically a no-duh aa they've got houses at least in New Orleans, Perdido Key/"Pensacola", and Biloxi.

So come on...I need ONE place to eat dinner there. There has to be one worthwhile spot....perhaps a Cajun or Creole joint?

Also, Tabella is an Italian restaurant owned by the same people that own Crescent city. Its directly behind Crescent City and very good too.

Newks is a sandwich/salad restaurant. Don't know why everyone raved about it. If your looking for good grub in the Burg, Crescent City is a very good restaurant.

Yeah I know, that was the point. We have one in Tally I've been to maybe two or three times at other peoples suggestions and my best description would be....inoffensive. I neither loved nor hated it, but wouldn't purposefully go back because it's priced at the higher end for subs and salads and doesn't live up to it. To me, it's well below Firehouse, Wawa, Publix and other cheaper local options.

But to me that showed what must be the overall quality...when you're raving about Newks there must be nothing in town worthwhile. But having said that, I've found people (we'll call them idiots) who rave about Jason's Deli. I can not stand the place (worst greasy and awful tasting muffuletta I've had, their Reuben was well below standard and their...I think it was a French dip I got the second time...was pretty bad) and yet they charge on par or even more than Newks.

As far as sandwiches go, Hattiesburg just got a Which wich about a year ago and to me, its very good....if your wanting a sandwich. They have a Gyro with lamb and beef on pita bread that is awesome. I would rate Which wich over Firehouse, McCallisters and all of the other chains.

Tallahassee has two of the Which Wichs but I've never been there as I haven't heard rave reviews. Maybe I'll check it out before we leave Tally.

In a neighborhood off of Oak Grove Rd. It's an older neighborhood, but it'll do for now.

Ah....my old stomping grounds. Well, one good thing about Hattiesburg is that its centrally located. You can be in Nola in 1.5 hours, MS gulf coast (casinos)in an hour, and Destin in about 3.5-4 hours. Tally is a good 5.5 hours....I've done it several times. As far as activities, not much unless you play golf or want to see USM get mangled in football. If you or your husband play golf, Timberton is a must play. Its located in South Hattiesburg. There are several nice courses located within a 60 mile radius if that's your thing. If it is, I can hook you up on the good ones and the ones to avoid. Gulfport has a water park that is nice if you like that sort of thing. Let me know what y'all like to do and I can suggest some things/places.

No we aren't golfers. But I would be interested in any places that sell local produce...farmers markets and the sort.

There is one on Hwy 49 North just outside of Hattiesburg. It's on the right just before you get to Hwy 42. They have lots of produce, local honey, peanuts.....all kinds of stuff. I think they even have home cooked plate lunches.
