spam from a friend?

Suppose you got an email which is ostensibly from a friend, 'Joe Blow' ---- but you recognize it as obvious spam and, of course, you do not open it. [You roll your mouse over the email address and it's from dl943f3w.legm[sor[72@molecricketcity.org or whatever]

Is there any need to contact 'Joe Blow' to let him know his email account may have been hacked??

I get that from friends all the time. Just call them and tell them to change their password because they are sending spam.
