Things to do in NYC? (intermediate level)

Nah, we go periodically to see shows, and general hanging around. This trip is to go see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and also a show called "Puffs", which is a comedy about being at Hogwarts when you're not Harry Potter - supposed to be really funny.

Thanks for the tip on Puffs. Will be in NYC March 18th for less than 30 hours on a college tour with my 18 y/o. Staying in Chelsea, planning to walk the Highline, eat our way through Chelsea Market, see a show (probably Book of Mormon - neither of us has seen it - but he’s a kid and grew up on Harry Potter) then head to Emily in West Village for late dinner. Next day is tied up with school stuff but I can’t miss Halal Guys.

I’ll be honest the Grimaldi’s in nyc doesn’t get my seal of approval.

There are far better pizzas here, there, and everywhere.

Obviously pizza is a personal taste thing, but if you like NYC style there aren’t too many better. Time Magazine says it’s the very best. I think it’s third best of those I’ve tasted (which isn’t 100% exhaustive as I’ve never lived in NYC, just had it on trips and always at highly rated places like Johns of Bleeker Street, Artichoke, Original Famous Rays, etc...).

Now if you hate NYC style pizza of course you’ll disagree.

I had been to NYC a ton of times and somehow never was aware of the Cloisters museum in upper (upper upper) Manhattan. It's a museum built from different sections of monasteries brought over from Europe. Probably not something to do if you're going with younger kids but not a bad idea for those who have been to the city often and looking for something new to check out.

Book of Mormon is SO good! Also SO inappropriate! Saw it with my 14yo daughter and it made me uncomfortable that she was laughing at things I wouldn't have thought she'd know to be funny.

About Puffs - be aware that the matinees are "family friendly" and leaves out the language and inappropriate humor. The daughter was completely against seeing the matinee, for fear of missing out on the really funy stuff.

If you like steak you must eat at Peter Luger's Steakhouse in Brooklyn over the Williamsburg bridge. THE best steak in NY metro area.

We're having dinner for Father's Day at Keen's steakhouse. Maybe it depends on where you're looking, or who you're listening to, but Keen's is also up there on the list of NYC steakhouses with Peter Luger. Plus, it has 130+ years of history, which interests me.

Wait - Peter Luger's doesn't take credit cards, but you can write a check? They also have their own "Pter Luger card". That's pretty weird!

Been to Keens, it was good. It's odd that PL's still doesn't take CCs but I have a Peter Luger's card I signed up for years ago.

The Peter Luger card is probably a cool souvenir-type thing to show people. In the same way that the daughter had an NYC public library card so she could check out books to read while we were up there - something that people who aren't from NYC just don't normally have.

One last NY steak restaurant note: thought that Sparks Steakhouse has highly overrated.

I love Carmine's Italian Restaurant on 44th and Times Square, if you don't mind the crowds trying to get there. It's family style lots of food cool spot. Think Peter Luger's is overrated myself, there is a great Brazilian Steak house, Fogo De Chao on West 53rd street, all you can eat steak which is pretty amazing imo. High line is cool do that with the kids usually when the weather is warm. Coney Island is cool just go during the day, night time is not the safest and a zoo. Dumbo area is nice it's right next to Grimaldi’s which I think is the lame pizza but I would prefer going to into any regular pizza shop and getting real pizza. Brooklyn Bridge Park is also cool to walk around.

I like Carmines a lot. Their tiramisu is really good.

Taking Fogo de Chao (a chain place) over a historic steak place is likely to ruffle some feathers: prepare to defend yourself!

That's ok I live in NYC so I don't really care about ruffling feathers lol. Just my experience at Peter L's was pretty bad the 3 or 4 times I have been there.

Solid pizza, expect a pretty good wait though.

Agree. Very cool to see, great quiet get away from the crowds and noise.

I still make a habit of going to Chilis in Jersey City. The city has a lot of great food but I do miss my mediocre suburban chains.
