Tom Petty

Growing up in the MTV age, there were a lot of bands that MTV just overplayed, and Tom Petty was one of them, IMO. I never liked TP & tH's. He does have a family and I will say a prayer for them.

Like Les said, celebrity deaths usually mean nothing to me, in fact, any deaths the past couple of years have meant nothing to me.

God bless, Tom Petty.

Alternately, you could have kept this to yourself.

For not being a Tim Petty fan but sending out well wishes, and being dickish on this board, really?

Wait, he's dead too?

The King is dead! Long live The King!

I always loved how as a youth he went over to Yankeetown to see Elvis filming a movie and then he actually Followed That Dream.

Btw his sister in law works at a local school.

Damn the Torpedoes was a regular in my music rotation during my younger days. Waxing nostalgia now. RIP.

Gut punch...one of the first concerts I ever saw as a kid at the Bandshell in Hogtown...as mentioned his songs really could be the soundtrack to a lot of folks lives.

Great song, great group. Who would've thunk Bob Dylan would be one of the last surviving Wilburys?
Well Roy Orbison was pretty old when they got together, so...

I saw Petty in probably 91 in Gainesville. Won the tickets from WFYV Rock 105. Went down on the charter bus with all the other contest winners. THAT was an eye-opening experience and my first clue into the type of folks in the "real" Jacksonville: lots of rednecks and girls wearing spandex. And you know how you always assume that contest winners are the ones who get the great seats up front? Naw, we were in the upper deck of the o-dome, practically BEHIND the stage. Probably one of the worst overall concert experiences in my life. Then back on the bus to ride back to Jax with a bunch of screaming partiers while I tried to sleep. I remember very little of the performance unfortunately.

His cousin is the Alachua County Sheriff.

At my request, we played Petty in my workout class this morning. For solid hour, every song played I knew by heart. Probably could have gone another hour. Don't think I could say that about any other artist.

He's one of those artists that have a crazy huge catologue that you don't even realize until something like that happens above.

True, but he died younger than either Harrison or Petty. I think Roy was 53. He died shortly after the first Wilburys album came out. I remember the "End of the Line" video featured an empy rocking chair in tribute to him, since he passed before they shot it.

A couple cool Tom Petty stories that people might not know...

When the Heartbreakers' second bassist Howie Epstein died, he was replaced with...their original bassist who had left the band 20 years previous. Cool interview here with the bassist about how it went down.

He held back the Hard Promises album from being released because the record company wanted to charge $9.98 instead of $8.98, which he thought wasn't fair to the fans.

Was it a heart attack?

Not looking for validation or an I told you so, but anytime anymore when I see an untimely death or a mass shooting, my first instinct is 'what were they on and how long had they been taking it'...
