UNC Just Announced They Are Sending Students Home For Fall Semester

Yeah, my buddy at UNC (licensing guy) just texted me with stats on cases and testing. Said that they are sending kids home and that he doesn't expect that football is going to be able to continue.

We'll see how this pans out ...

Serious question: why can’t colleges have online learning for everyone EXCEPT students whose majors/scholarships are tied to activities that have to be performed in person? This would include scholarship athletes, and I imagine some lab-related science students, etc. Just create bubbles for these populations.

Very hard to imagine students being able to fully or mostly return to campus without widespread outbreaks, given the disease remains uncontrolled.

This is getting whacked out. I get the distance learning option for a few months but don’t kill the golden goose.

$$$$$. Most college towns can’t get by without them.

I'm definitely feeling this, I'm paying for my son's house in Oxford and he'll probably move out there and never leave it. The silver lining is he's a grad student, seniors and grad students pay no fraternity dues and get the meal plan for free. At least I'll save that money I thought but the house isn't going to be serving meals. I can't win for losing.

So, all online classes for UNC. No In person classes because it's not safe.

And college football is good to go, very safe.

no matter which side you are with this stuff... I hope everyone can see the BLATENT hypocrisy going on right now.

after several cluster outbreaks over the weekend...I think The UNC President said previously if there are no students on campus they will not play Fall Sports either..

This is funny. How many positive cases resulted in sick students, students that ended up in a hospital? And the ones (if any) that were hospitalized how long did they stay before being released? Any end up in ICU?

No comment on the most likely answers to the above questions.

Football is far from the golden goose to a university. It is to an athletics department, but not to the university as a whole.

Tuition dollars ... that's the golden goose. And federal and state dollars.

Football is an extracurricular diversion that is complementary to the actual purpose of a university. We alumni and fans ... we don't see it that way ... but that's the reality of the situation.

Universities don't need athletics.

Very true post just look up the University budget vs. the Athletic budget its a sideshow.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to have large numbers of students in one area and not have major outbreaks. Just think about how irresponsible you were when you were 19 and single and exploring life’s parameters. A few thousand people together acting like I did, and it’s a full blown contagion in a month!

Saw that coming. I said back in early June better start wearing masks and listening to science to stay home. I doubt we play this year. Hope to see some football, but this just threw a huge wrench into the gears. Is FSU holding classes yet.

As long as students are enrolled there can be football. UNC is going to have a decision to make (if they are even contemplating not playing) because the rest of the ACC seems to be full go. SEC in announcing their schedule on the SEC network tomorrow night. College Football is going to be played, people are grossly underestimating the financial push to play in a lot of areas.

North Carolina is the oldest non private University in the country. They can probably afford a season without football better then most.

They just waited for something like this, to pull the plug
Something like...a wildfire in no time?
In just ONE WEEK, the positivity rate at UNC went from 2.8% to 13.6%, per the school. That’s insanely bad! And totally predictable.

you know that in Roman culture the thumbs down did not mean die. Thumbs down if used at all was a sign to let live. Usually it was a crossed arm symbol with two fingers down. If we got this so wrong can you imagine what we got wrong with Christianity.

Based on your previous posts, you fully expected something like this to happen. You really think UNC didn't?
It doesn't alarm me, but I know it makes alarmists' heads explode

One of the problems with everything being online is that it isn’t the best way for everyone to learn. It’s great for some and will be a disaster for others. I work with a number of kids high school and college) who are concerned about it.

Also, why in the world would anyone pay tuition at a four year school for their freshman when they could most likely pay 50-75% less to get the same basic studies done at the local JC?

The outbreaks are completely expected. The speed and rate of outbreak should be alarming to ANYONE.

This week:
-135 new positive cases
-130 new STUDENT positive cases
-5 new EMPLOYEE positive cases
-13.6% positive test rate
-Quarantine room capacity at 5.5%
These are only REPORTED positives.

UNC has roughly 30000 total students. Something like 137 tested positive in first week. That’s less than one half of one percent...and they weren’t sick, just tested positive. Don’t know how many were tested, but I know Notre Dame required students to have a positive result within one week of arriving on campus.
