US Open

While I always like to hear FSU mentioned in a positive light, is it really very common to mention the college attended by your players? I consider myself a fan of both pro golf and college sports, but I doubt I could name the college for more than 20% of the guys on tour.

I heard more than a few FSU mentions throughout the day.

I’m disappointed in how they softened the course today. Would have loved to see another bloodbath today.

CMA - you serious with your “they should cancel play and call it after 36...” idea? Get out of here.
You can't have a championship of this magnitude played on greens that inconsistent. Saturday afternoon ruined every player but one on Sunday. Total fiasco...

You can, and we did, and it was awesome. Saturday had some huge scores, but that was as attributable to the weather as the course setup.

Par should be a magnificent score at the US Open.

Yes, it's pretty common. The Golf Channel and CBS run a version of a leaderboard with each college player's logo next to their names. Happens once or twice a weekend.

College affiliation is more likely to be mentioned by the announcers when a player wears his school's colors. Unfortunately, I never see our alumni doing so.

It's hardly awesome seeing putts roll like they're in a pachinko machine or perfectly hit bunker shots and lag putts almost stop by the cup then roll 20 - 30 - 50 feet away. Make the rough tough, tuck some pins but don't turn the thing into a carnival. The USGA does this all to often and most everybody thinks it's absurd. I mean they admitted they wet the bed and you're defending it?

Outside of Fowler who does this?
Billy Horschel, for one.

Guess we differ there, I enjoyed seeing them squirm. They all played the same course, the one that played it best won.

It's the ONE tournament a year where we know the USGA is going to make it tough.

Just out of curiosity, I took a quick look at the current top 50 on the PGA money list. I knew for sure the universities attended by:

Koepka, Horschel, and Reed (kinda - I know he started at UGA, got booted, and finished at one of the small schools in Georgia)

I'm pretty sure of a couple of others (Phil, Fowler)

I know Tiger went to Stanford, and I know Nicklaus went to OSU (but I know that from seeing him at football games through the years. I know the other guys who went to FSU & a few that went to UF, but that's about it. I've just never put much into what schools PGA guys attended.

I imagine that comes from the fact college golf gets zero media coverage so you don't learn which school a player attended until he becomes a pro and it's mentioned during a broadcast.

Seems like it would be pretty hard not to notice where Fowler went to school. And while I think the guy's orange fixation, along with the over-the-top displays Horschel puts on, are kind of juvenile, it would be nice if our alums on the tour did a little more to flash the Seminole brand.

In addition to those you named, I also know:

Justin Thomas - Bama
DJ - Coastal Carolina
DeChambeau - SMU
Bubba - UGA
Rickie - Okie State
Spieth - Texas
Kisner - UGA

They did play the same course and they didn't. Saturday for instance, the morning groups had it good and the afternoon groups couldn't stop the ball on some of the greens. Not sure if this is the exact right number but something like the final 7 groups on Saturday were 93 over.

Brandell Chamblee summed it up nicely. "On their watch, there have been huge mistakes in major championships. … We well know this one (Shinnecock in 2018) – a colossal mistake all the way across the board. The golf course was bumpy the first day; they didn’t quite get that right. It was awful the third day. And today, in a different kind of way, it was far too easy."

Brandel Chamblee is a chump.

ad hominem is for chumps

I hope you see the irony there, despite your attempt to veil the insult.

Chamblee takes the holier than thou road and is not well liked among golfers or golf fans. His opinions might be “telling it like it is” but they’re still the opinions of a chump.

Tells it exactly like it is though...
Only when it suits his agenda. Guy does do good stats research but is a total cherry-picking douche in real life. Know him personally and he is good at generating controversy but so wrong so often it’s not even funny.

As to the tournament conditions, this tournament has always been about playing on the edge of fairness. The weather forecast was off and that’s where they got into it. Almost every week the late/early or early/late draw has a substantial scoring differential. It’s nothing new to these players.

Anyone crowing about inconsistencies in greens should negate the first 80 or so US open champions as the agronomy was the definition of inconsistency. Luck has always been part of the game and especially this event.

And yet the USGA admitted they blew it.

“It was a tale of two golf courses, and no doubt, we would admit, well-executed shots were not only not regarded, but were punished,” said Mike Davis, USGA executive director.

“We would say that it was a very tough test, and really too tough this afternoon … It got too tough today in some areas. If we got a mulligan, we would have slowed the greens down this afternoon. Confident we can slow the golf course down going into tomorrow,” he added.

So you're basically defending something that the responsible party has already admitted was a mistake. The LR never disappoints...

That's absurd. Does Tiger represent all golfers and do you represent all fans? That chump could still kick your tail around the golf course all day any day...

Yep it never disappoints to have people claim someone said something they did not say.

The tournament is designed to play on the edge of fairness so when the forecast is off it goes over the edge. Never said it was ideal or fair, not sure where you read that. I did say the players know to expect it and the tournament requires both luck and skill to win. It’s golf not bowling.

I'm really confused. Are you saying The USGA is wrong for saying they were wrong?
