FINAL PRACTICE REPORT (7:35 p.m.)

Post-practice video interview with Jimbo Fisher

Jimbo Fisher said he was happy with the way Wednesday's lone practice went. He said the team got quite a bit accomplished. Fisher said, "We played with more intelligence, more consistency, more toughness and execution on both sides of the ball was better."

Fisher said Jalen Ramsey is OK and that he tweaked his ankle. Ramsey was held out of practice although Fisher said it wasn't anything worrisome. Fisher said if there had been a game today, Ramsey could have played. The plan is to keep Ramsey healthy and let some of the younger players at his position get reps.

Reggie Northrup was held out to get rest. Fisher said it's common place for Northrup to go hard for two days and then rest for one. He added, "It's typical for what we're doing with his knee right now."

Also, Mario Pender was held out because of a quad contusion. Fisher said Pender is waiting to get his "burst" back and could return within the next two days.

Fisher also addressed the importance of Saturday's 11:30 a.m. scrimmage at Doak. He said the session gave a chance for younger players to get a bit more comfortable inside a larger environment. Fisher said, "Getting our young is in there for the first time as a starter. Last week, they were in there for the first time as a starter. So that makes a difference just like the games will."

So how will the second scrimmage be different? Fisher said there will be more situational play and that penalties will count.

Alec Eberle and Cole Minshew, who both got reps with the first team on Wednesday, were also discussed a few times. The goal has been to find consistency on the offensive line. More specifically, at center. Eberle and Corey Martinez have alternated at center throughout camp. Eberle was taking first reps during the open portion of practice. Fisher went back to how for the younger players it is about how they can handle the mental side of situational play.

Spoke to Roderick Johnson after practice and he confirmed how well Minshew is playing. Fisher said the same thing during his post-practice interview and noted he's still not 100% over an ankle sprain.

Johnson also praised how improved the pass rush has been in practice. Said defensive ends are using their hands much better this year.

Also spoke with Terrance Smith after practice. Smith said he's starting to both feel and see an improved pass rush. Smith said the defensive line has really made strides this offseason and the work is paying off.

Smith had a few nice things to say about how impressed he was with Josh Sweat and his return to football after suffering a horrific knee injury in his senior year. He described Sweat's ability as "crazy" and his skills on the pass rush will be welcomed.

Former Ohio State RB Maurice Clarett was out at practice. He is apparently going to speak to the team and share all the troubles he had back when he was in college.

Finally, Fisher did address the Yellow Brick Road. He smiled and "We're off to see the wizard." Fisher wouldn't get into specifics about the road or its significance. Although he did have a little fun with one reporter who admitted to not having seen 'The Wizard of Oz.' Fisher asked a few players if they had seen the movie and they said "yes." Fisher said when he was a kid, he was afraid the Wicked Witch of the West was going to take Toto away from Dorothy.

Here's the post-practice video interview with Jimbo Fisher.

Tentative practice Schedule the rest of the week:

EARLY PRACTICE REPORT

This was FSU's only practice of the day and here are a few notes and items from what we were able to see:

LB Reggie Northrup, WR Nyqwan Murray, WR Auden Tate, DB Jalen Ramsey and DB Marcus Lewis were all out. Lewis was wearing a soft knee brace. We'll find out more from Fisher once we get a chance to speak with him.

RB Mario Pender was dressed but limited in practice.

DB Calvin Brewton was dressed and participating in practice.

WR George Campbell also returned to practice. He was in a blue non-contact jersey. TE Jeremy Kerr, LB Sh'Mar Kilby-Lane and OL David Robbins were also wearing blue non-contact jerseys.

Freshman OL Cole Minshew and redshirt freshman Alec Eberle both received first team reps with the offensive line. Eberle got quite a bit of time at center while Minshew got some time at right guard.

Scouts from the Bengals, Bills, Colts and Rams were also at practice.

Also, the players walked on a painted yellow brick road from the locker room to the practice field. Even though it rained earlier in the day, no one went over the rainbow as there were none. Here's a look at it:

That's it for now. We'll have more once we speak with Jimbo and the players after 6:30 or so.
