Saw the news where he finally agreed to step down at the end of the season. Made me think, in Europe winning national titles in more like winning a conference title in college sports. The Champions League is what all the big clubs fight to win. Wenger never could win that. Made me think he seems very much like Martin. Both almost synonymous with the programs. Maybe both are in their last year.

Granted he never won the Champions League, but Premier League titles in English Football is NOTHING like winning a conference in NCAA football. Terrible comparison, IMO.

Wenger is Bobby Bowden, not Martin.

His 3 Premier League titles (one of which was an undefeated season over 38 matches...49 matches altogether over two seasons - which has never been done before or since) is very much akin to Bowden's 2 Natty's.

Also the similarities between all the FSU 10-win seasons and Top 4 finishes, are precisely like Wenger's 20 consecutive Champions League appearances.

Wenger = Bobby

Les,
Here is why I compared it to conference titles, not in terms of importance (though I think there might be some comparison in terms of SEC football conference titles), is that winning the Champions League is the ultimate prize for the top teams in Europe. Yes Barca and Real want to win La Liga very badly, but the Champions League is the ultimate achievement.

Secondly, you have a much smaller pool of teams that are realistically competing for your domestic league just like you do in conference play. There are about 5-6 teams that can realistically win the EPL (Leicester City aside), but when you start talking winning the CL it is maybe 15-20 with that group going through cycles of success. Similar to how there are effectively 20-25 programs that can actually compete for a national title though not in a given year.

The reason I say Wenger is like 11 is that they both have a giant hole in it. Wenger is not Bobby. When you list Bobby's achievements there are is no "but". Even the most glorious tribute to Wegner will have to admit that he won with style and had unmatched success (Invincibles) BUT never won the CL.

Nope.

Wenger is Bobby.

Martin is Mauricio Pochettino...or someone along those lines. Good coach (allegedly) who’s never won anything big.

This. I have been saying this for the past 3-4 years. Wenger built the Club up, and is now tailing off and returning the Club back to closer to what he inherited instead of leaving it healthy and at the top.

I can see 11 as a fair comparison to an extent, but 11 is not struggling. He is still winning 40 games a season and making Regionals. Also, I don't think fans in England prioritize winning a CL title like College Football fans prioritize winning the College Football Playoff. First & foremost, winning BPL is the goal. Is City disappointed they aren't going to win CL? Of course they are. However, I can tell you they are ecstatic they won BPL this season. Winning CL would have just been icing on the cake.

Les when you are saying that Wenger- Bobby are you simply referring to how they both built their respective programs? I would agree with that completely.

Or are you saying the Wenger = Bobby in terms of how they are viewed in comparison to their peers and other coaches/mangers?

I just know when I look at both of them I see very close parallels. Frankly, i thought everyone who followed English football and FSU, saw the same thing.

And your Martin argument is valid, I just don’t find it compelling.

What is it that says you see Wenger as the same as Bobby? I see the comparison in the longevity and attacking style. But I dont think it is a perfect match, just like I agree that my comment that Wenger is like 11 is not perfect.

I think Arsenal was much more established than FSU was when Bobby took over. I believe when Arsene took the helm Arsenal had won the second most championships in English football behind Liverpool and tied with United. I think there are similarities to say Jimbo (not in playing style) but in reigniting a tradition rich program that had grown stagnant.
