Winter Storm North Florida?

Yep, 0 and 30 are in two very different worlds. Sure, damp cold is different, but that is a silly statement.

Couple years back, had a coworker down from Denver. We were in Houstank in January and it was roughly 45 and damp. That dude could NOT warm up, all kinds of shivering. Asked what his deal was. "This is a MUCH colder 45 than back home."

True enough, upper 30s in Denver and I'm running around in shorts and hoodie. Upper 30s in North Texas with the wet air and I'm a couple layers in.

Did they say when it snowed in 89? I never remembered it snowing while at FSU. If it was during Christmas break, I would have been out of town at that time.
It was (during Christmas break). I was a student then, as well, and went to visit relatives in Virginia. There was snow all over, but it was hard and nasty looking, and you had to be careful not to bust your arse just walking on it....Nothing like the soft powdery stuff I'd always seen in TV & movies. If one had thrown a snowball made of that stuff, they could've killed someone.

Nothing's worse than damp cold, for sure. It goes all the way down to the bone.

As mentioned its all relative to what ur used to. I just walked half mile to lunch and back in 6 inches snow today and counting, 40mph wind did suck, high 19. New Hampshire- we’re in a long minus at night streak and hit -25 last weekend.

First time a ski mountain ever gave me my money back to stay away.

If i were in FL I wouldn’t want any snow either with the lack resources and driving inexperience.

Meanwhile Quebec City thinks New Hampshire is in Fall.

Yep, bikini skiing is a thing out here. Its just a dry cold.... :)

Cracks me up so Ft. Bragg has been shut down since last night. I drove on base this morning hoping to get a few things done and the place is a ghost town. All the Fayetteville business are open; so t least I got a haircut and was able to get a few thing done. I just have to wonder when the Army said hey man go live in those mountains for 6 months with no heat, no running water, no toilet etc. when it snowed could I have closed the safe house down? I get safety and all but it is like end of the world happened here. Oh well it worked out for me I was supposed to fly home Friday and then back on Monday; but due to cost they made me stay over the weekend. Drive home Friday night celebrate the wife's bday and drive back Sunday.

Kooter, you still in Concord? it's brutal there right now with another foot of snow and now winds bringing the temp down to -12. I moved down south three weeks ago, just before the bitter cold started to set in. 40 degree weather here is shorts weather for me!

Wait, it’s 59 inside the house?
My wife would probably start burning furniture if that happened at my house...
Yes. It was 59° inside. Our heat is a heat pump so it's not very effective when it gets this cold.We set the thermostat at 61° so it doesn't just run and run. Go outside for a while and 61° feels pretty comfortable. My wife is from Pittsburgh so this is far from foreign for her.

Holy crap you keep the house 59/61 degrees? My family would freeze (including me).

17 degrees in Atlanta area this morning. Mid 30's is the high. It's been like this all week.
I can see why my relatives up north always talk about their winter bowling leagues. There isn't crap to do stuck in the house with it too cold outside.

When we have normal low temperatures, the thermostat is set at 66° during the day and 63° at night. It's only set that low when we've had the weather like in the last week or so.
We have a little larger than average house with only two of us in it now. I'm not trying to keep Gulf Power in business by myself.

That's still damn cold. With gas heat, we're at 72 day and 67 night. We are finally getting back to normal temps here.

The weather is definitely starting to moderate here. It was 26 degrees this morning but is already up to the mid 40's. We were barely above freezing at this time yesterday. Supposed to have one more sub-freezing night tonight but that's it for a while.

Let’s face it, some places are just down right cold...

We are about to make a week straight of sub freezing numbers, with tonight supposedly the coldest so far this year, but our numbers pale in comparison to others. Did y’all see the flooding in Massachusetts as a result of this storm? Wowzers.
Honestly, we are mostly inside complaining about what is outside. I saw people being told to leave a fast food joint yesterday unless they were gonna order more food. Homeless are all over the place these days. The temp at the time was mid-teens with enuff wind blowing to get down to your soul...
We have much to be thankful for.

Mt. Washington has some pretty extreme weather....frequently.

Wow. Relative humidity of 100% even with temps well below zero. Plenty of moisture, basically too dang cold to snow. That will hurt cha. There was @ thread with divinnole talking about how 30 in Fla feels like 0 in Wisconsin...take note. That kinda weather is survival mode...mess up and you lose extremities or die. Maybe both.

Clear with blue skies but a little brisk in the western panhandle this morning.

2 Qs, you keep it 61 inside when its that cold outside? Yeah, my crew would revolt and burn furniture.

2, did you just link an image on FB? I am still looking for my solution for images now that photobucket changed. Funny all the old images I find when searching random forums that are now dead due to the policy change.

Yes and yes. As one who has worked outside in Florida building my entire adult life, I like it cool.

Makes sense. Q, for crown molding do you prefer wood filler or caulk for seams? Or is that level of finishing not your forte? I can't quite get my cracks to close up. :) I think we are just too dry for wood putty. I think I remember you saying you are GC right?

Shoot, who likes it crazy hot when they are outside working? Cool or cold weather is the friend of a man/woman who works outside.

My first company made crown molding with plaster the old school way. That's becoming a lost art. I was always been better with mud than with wood so I had guys that worked for me who did the more complicated crowns. The key is learning how to cope in the joints. That way, if a corner is not exactly square, everything will still fit tightly.
To answer your question, putty. Caulk will shrink.

Hahaha. you say caulk shrinks, others say the putty wont flex! There is no good answer. But I did end up going putty so far.

You are absolutely correct on the lost art of the plastering. Watched a couple videos of that, said nope and went to HD. Agreed on the coping. I ended up using the MDF as she preferred the profile. Would cope the wood, I find the MDF to be a royal pain to cope well and still need a little touch up (unless I am doing it poorly which is entirely possible).

Hit zero this morning in Charlottesville, don't think it's been above freezing for a week. This is the coldest it's been hands down, in the six years we've been here. What's frustrating is just a dusting of snow the whole time(we're snow lovers). Calling for a chance of rain tomorrow, seriously?

Charlottesville is one of the best places to enjoy snow. I loved my time there including the two huge snowstorms where my car was useless and I had to walk to get food and supplies.

You might be referring to the winter of 2010, we arrived a year later. They had back to back snow dumps. Last winter was horrible, had about six inches total. Year before pretty good, had a nine day snowpack after a storm, nearly wore the snowshoes out.

One of my best friends hit some ice on Thomasville Rd a couple years ago, flipped his car, and broke his neck. One doesn't even consider this sort of hazard when living in Florida.
