Just look at Wake Forest Pass Defense. Thoughts after watching WF defense vs Virginia’s previously prolific offense last night. WF played zone defense the entire game!
My observations: Their system of redshirting their incoming freshmen for up to 2 years has really paid off. Their team is loaded with older players whom have been coached on their system on both defense & offense for 4 or more years.
  1. Only recall 1 play where a UVA receiver got behind the defender by just a step and the ball was slightly over thrown.
  2. Don’t recall a single blown coverage.
  3. Crossing routes. No problem, as the receivers ran to where there was a rapidly closing pass defender whom aggressively played the ball or delivered a hard tackle.
  4. WF Linebackers at times dropped into the zone coverage at times, leaving very tight spaces for the UVA QB to squeeze the ball
  5. WF Def. Line is very good and the timing of their delayed inside blitz was a thing of beauty.
  6. WF DBs and LBs are excellent open field tacklers. There were hardly any missed open field tackles. So why can’t FSU play zone pass coverage when they continue to play man to man coverage poorly?
