Today there is extreme caution in saying the least offensive things to people... lets shift to a time when Don Rickles stood on a podium and roasted people- no matter their color, religion or nationality-- and yea he made fun of everyone on these topics. I've seen All in the Family and get it-- acting. But what Don Rickles did was on another level. Ok I'm behind the curve here, I guess most people know this already but all I can say is wow. The laughter from people on the panel and in the audience is good to see, yet I I can't help feeling somewhat "nervous". Below is just one example-- look what happens in the first 1.15 minutes.

I saw another one where he was roasting Ronald Regan. Emmanuel Lewis was the host, handed Rickles the mic, the first thing out of Rickles mouth was "there is the only black guy that won't play basketball". Different times, different world. Its great people laughed at this and found it funny but at times did anyone ever think he crossed the line? My God at some of his comedy......is all I can say.

And by all accounts Mr. Rickles was the nicest guy in every room he walked into. I love watching old Tonight Show clips when he comes on. “Mr. Warmth” owned every show.

Rickles was the best for sure. It was a different era, but people understood it was his "schtick" too. If you're in on the joke, you won't get offended. He also didn't discriminate. He was an equal opportunity offender.
“In on the joke” is a great way to put it.

People take themselves sooo damned seriously. If you cannot laugh at yourself, I feel sorry for you.

Bob Hope and Carol Burnett/Tim Conway/Harvey Korman was also funny and very clean.
Hope did more for our troops over the years than any other civilian. He sacrificed his own family Christmas for virtually every year bringing cheers to troops worldwide. He never got the credit he was due.

On the contrary, Hope was probably the biggest name on the planet back in the day.

In way too young to remember Don Rickles but the celeb roasts Comedy Central puts on every so often certainly aren’t for the mild mannered. I love that kind of “shock” humor and agree the world could use more people who aren’t easily offended.

The Dean Martin/Don Rickles roast did not go as far as the current "vulgar insult" roasts of today.

He was a loose cannon and we loved it. Anything was possible when Don Rickles was with Johnny Carson. And Johnny, normally a control freak with his guests, just let Rickles run loose. Don never would have had that leeway unless he truly was a great friend to his peers. Love him in Casino...tip of the hat to Scorcese for casting him.

Back in those days, they all knew each other and would hang out together, and even then some people would boo him for some of his comments. Someone booed him while he was roasting Bob Hope and his comeback was, "No Booing No Boing. If there another outburst will going to let Bob Hope do his jokes."

Another good comedian back in those days was Foster Brooks, and here is he is roasting Don Rickles.

Foster Brooks roasting Don Rickles.
