Softball FSU softball picks up another run-rule win vs. UNC

FSU sports information:

The No. 16 Florida State softball team (39-10, 17-3) continued its stellar play with its third consecutive run-rule victory as they rolled to an 11-3 win in six innings to clinch the series against North Carolina (30-18, 10-13). FSU has won 13 consecutive games and are 21-1 in its last 22 games, 12 of those wins coming via run rule.

Saturday's games started very similarly to Friday's game as the Tar Heels struck first with two runs in the top of the first. FSU struck right back in the bottom of the first as Kaley Mudge led off with a double, and Jaysoni Beachum recorded her 59th RBI of the season which broke FSU's RBI record for a true freshman to cut the lead to one.

In the bottom of the second inning, Michaela Edenfield and Katie Dack each drew a walk to set the stage for Mudge who delivered with a RBI single to tie the game.

FSU continued to roll in the bottom of the third as Jahni Kerr hit a two-run home run with two outs to put two more on the board for the Seminoles. It was Kerr's eighth home run of the season and her second home run of the series.

The Tar Heels got one back in the top of the fourth and had runners on the corners with two outs, but Emma Wilson got the groundout to end the inning and to keep the lead with the Noles.

FSU blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth as Mudge drew a leadoff walk, and Beachum was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for Kalei Harding. Harding delivered with a rocket off the wall to score both Beachum and Mudge. Harding advanced to third on the throw home and scored on a sac fly from Isa Torres. After Flaherty walked, Edenfield hit a two-run home run in just her second game back from injury to blow the game open as the Noles led 9-3 after the fourth inning.

The Tar Heels weren't going to go down without a fight as they loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth. The runner at third tried to sprint home on a wild pitch, but catcher Madi Frey collected the ball and dove for the plate to tag the runner. Wilson got a flyout to end the inning unharmed.

FSU ended the games with two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Flaherty led off the inning with a bunt single. Kennedy Harp walked, and Kerr continued her hot weekend with a double off the left field wall to score bothFlaherty and Harp.

The Seminole offense has been on a tear lately as they have scored in 10 out their last 13 innings dating back to the fifth inning against Florida. In those 13 innings, FSU has scored 36 runs on 24 hits.

Wilson was credited with the victory as she went 3.1 innings and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out two. Mimi Gooden got the start in the circle and went 2.1 innings. Allison Royalty got the final out for theNoles in the top of the sixth.

FSU will wrap up the series Sunday at noon on ACC Network Extra. FSU will honor six seniors Sunday in a pregame ceremony at 11:45 a.m.

Softball FSU honors seniors, sweeps UNC, picks up 14th straight win

FSU sports information:

The No. 16 Florida State softball team (40-10, 18-3) accomplished its series sweep against the UNC Tar Heels (30-19, 10-14) in a 2-1 victory. With this win, FSU has now won 14 consecutive games and are 22-1 in its last 22 games.

Prior to the start of the game, FSU honored six seniors — Allison Royalty, Kaley Mudge, Kalei Harding, Devyn Flaherty, Autumn Belviy and Emma Wilson — in a pregame ceremony, as a thanks for their contributions to the success of the program.

After a quiet first two innings, which saw both teams make it on base but neither being able to secure a run, the Seminoles were the first to put a run on the board. Amaya Ross got things going with a single and stole second to put herself in scoring position. Ross would then reach third, after Kaley Mudge flied out left field, and would score an unearned run due to an error by the left fielder.

Later in the fourth inning, Kalei Harding reached first on a single to shortstop. Harding would advance to second and third, due to Isa Torres and Devyn Flaherty groundouts. Harding would score from third as a throw back to the pitcher went wild and scurried home and got the obstruction call to give the Noles a 2-0 lead.

The Tar Heels would be close to scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning, with runners on second and third, but with two outs, Ashtyn Danley forced a groundout to the get out of the inning.

Later in the top of the sixth, the Tar Heels had bases loaded and on the verge of scoring but would be stopped thanks to Flaherty throwing the groundout to end the inning and maintain the Noles lead.

However, despite the two stops, UNC would not relent, scoring a run in the top of the seventh, but would not be able to tie the game, after Kaley Mudge ended the game by recording a flyout to end the contest.

The Seminoles saw solid performances from the circle during the matchup. Senior Allison Royalty made her ninth start of the season for the Seminoles. Royalty would go on to pitch for the first 3.0 innings, not allowing a single run on 14 batters faced.

Danley would take over for Royalty in the fourth inning. Danley would stay in the circle for the next 3.2 innings, allowing only three hits and zero runs on 17 batters faced.

Emma Wilson took over for Danley for the final 0.1 innings, completing the Seminole victory. UNC got its share of hits with 10, but the FSU pitchers stood strong and stranded 12 Tar Heel runners on base.

Florida State's next matchup will see them face off against No. 12 Florida for a midweek matchup for a home game at JoAnne Graf Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Baseball Live Updates: No. 10 FSU at No. 6 Duke (Game 3, Sunday at 1 p.m. on ACCNX)

The Florida State baseball team has already secured a humongous road series victory over Duke. Now the Seminoles go for what would be an even bigger sweep Sunday afternoon.

The 10th-ranked Seminoles (34-8, 13-7 in ACC) will look to complete a 4-0 week with a third win over the No. 6 Blue Devils (29-14, 13-10) Sunday at 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

With a 4-2 win Friday and a 7-6 win Saturday, FSU is up to No. 4 in the RPI, the highest-ranked team from outside the SEC.

FSU is giving freshman lefty Brady Louck (0-0. 5.83 ERA) another crack at a weekend start in the series finale at Duke. It will be his fourth start of the season and he enters with an impressive 25 strikeouts over 17 innings this season but has also walked nine batters and allowed 18 hits (eight extra-base hits).

Duke is starting junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Higgins (0-1, 4.94 ERA). It'll be his third start of the season and he's likely an opener of sorts, having thrown no more than four innings in any of his previous 14 appearances this season. He's got 33 strikeouts over 31 innings of work this season but has also allowed 26 hits and issued 15 walks.

Football Visits with Jordan Travis convinced Jets of who he is and QB he can become

Jordan Travis was consistent in his rehab from a major leg injury, returning to throw the football in the weeks leading up to the NFL Draft. The New York Jets are convinced in who Travis is as a person and his comeback as a quarterback.

The Jets sent scouts to West Palm Beach to meet with Travis and used one of their "30 visits" at the team’s headquarters with the Florida State star. NFL teams are allowed to meet with up to 30 draft-eligible prospects, not counting those at nearby colleges, and Travis had those visits with the Jets and Las Vegas Raiders.

“Jordan is a dynamic player,” Jets GM Joe Douglas said. “Obviously a tough injury for him and the team last year. But dynamic player. He came on a '30 visit,' just getting a chance to get to spend time with him, get to know him as a person. He’s a special guy. You can see why teammates gravitate towards him and why he’s one of the more respected guys when you talk to other players at Florida State.

“He’s coming to a great situation with some unbelievable veteran leadership. … Really cool opportunity for him to learn, develop and just showcase his ability.”

Softball FSU softball routs UNC in six innings

FSU sports information:

The 16th-ranked Florida State Softball team (38-10, 16-3) kicked off its Senior Weekend with a 13-3 win over North Carolina (30-17, 10-12) in six innings Friday night at the Seminole Softball Complex. FSU has now won 12 consecutive games and have won 20 out of the last 21 games dating back to Mar. 21.

The game started with an eventful 38-minute first inning as the Tar Heels kicked off the scoring with a pair of runs, one off of an error and the other a RBI single. Ashtyn Danley got out of a bases loaded jam to end the inning and prevent any further damage.

The Seminoles responded emphatically at the bottom of the inning. Kaley Mudge hit a single followed by a Kalei Harding single. Isa Torres was able to reach second base from a fielder's choice and an error by the first baseman allowing Harding to score to put the Noles on the board. Devyn Flaherty then beat out a throw at first to bring in another run.

In her first game back at JoAnne Graf Field after returning from injury, Michaela Edenfield hit an RBI single to right field to score Flaherty. Jahni Kerr capped off the inning with her seventh home run of the season to make it 5-2 after the first inning.

In the second inning, UNC hit a solo home run to cut the lead to two, but Jaysoni Beachum got the run right back as Jaysoni Beachum hit one right back to the pitcher to score Amaya Ross.

The scoring for the Noles continued as a walk and two singles loaded the bases for Beachum. Beachum hit a sac fly allowing the run to score, and Harding picked up a RBI on a ground out to make it 8-3. Isa Torres hit her second home run in as many games to give FSU a commanding 10-3 lead after four innings.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Seminoles, after both Ross and Mudge hit a single, Beachum added on to her already fantastic freshman season by ending the game with a three-run home run gliding out of the stadium, making the score 13-3 to trigger a run rule. This was the 11th run rule win out of the past 21 games for the Seminoles. With a season-high five RBI, Beachum has tied Sydney Sherrill's freshman record of 58 RBI in a single season. That mark is also the seventh-most RBI in a single season in program history.

Ashtyn Danley got the start for the Seminole and went 4.2 innings for the Seminoles allowing three runs and three hits while striking out two. Emma Wilson finished the game in the circle pitching the final 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit.

Florida State will face UNC again on Saturday with the first pitch set for 4 p.m. and available to watch on ESPNU.
