Never has there ever….

I’m guilty for believing old school way is still the main way as is many on here and among FSU as a whole. What I mean is I have been holding onto the “True Purity” of recruiting. Recruiting where a LONG time commit like Bolden and Hunter means very little. Yes, there are exceptions but the exceptions are shrinking quickly and will soon be a thing of the past. The days of someone like J. Smith who hasn’t been on OSU campus, but has basically been living on FSU campus the past few months. The ole saying “follow the visits” means absolutely nothing anymore. There are many examples, but not taking the time to fully look into it.

With that said, it’s NEVER has there EVER been a more pressing time than now to get out of the ACC. PERIOD. MONEY is the only way to insure dominance because MONEY buys the talent. The ole school Bobby methods no longer work. They did for his era big Money talks now. The ACC will cost our program an enormous amount of money in the yrs to come and the buyout cost will pale in comparison to what will be lost as a whole for this program by staying. Years and years of sharing with bottom feeders while make millions and millions less than these teams who are basically buying our commits in the final hour and they didn’t have to put in a fraction of the time spent to gain their commitment, maintain their commitment and Seal their commitment. Its a new era and it’s only becoming more and more glaring each and every yr since NIL come into play.

Blue bloods ( rich history ) enormous amount of boosters, tv deals among many other factors are showing everyone who the WHO’s and WHO’s NOTs are. These guys aren’t in the coaching rooms wondering do we spend X on HS recruits or portal. They are saying what do you want coach and they go buy them. Back the day a program like FSU coming of the success we have had the last 2 yrs did not have this happen to them. The proof??? We became a nobody to a somebody in a fraction of the time and I’m talking about a nobody that was 50+ yrs behind even having a football program. When a 13-0 team doesn’t make the playoffs and the national news world is saying we didn’t essentially because of the conference we play and they prove it by putting an SEC team Bama and future SEC Texas sent a big time message to all especially recruits. You are kidding yourself if you think it didn’t play a huge impact on recruiting. What Norvell has done since he got here is being quickly “erased” and covered up by money. It’s truly said to see the purity of something be crushed by the root of all evil. I’ll finish with this..we all better hope we get out of this God forsaken conference and every single person who can give anything better start giving or we will become the dying breed.

Football Washington's Kalen DeBoer named Eddie Robinson coach of the year

Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer has been selected as the 2023 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to the College Football Playoff, the most wins in program history, and the Pac-12 Championship. Washington has posted a perfect 13-0 record this year and owns the nation’s longest active win streak at 20 games. The Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award is presented by the Football Writers Association of America and the Sugar Bowl.

DeBoer is the second coach from Washington to win the Eddie Robinson Award and the first in more than 30 years. Don James won it in 1991 in Washington’s national championship season. Chris Petersen was a finalist in 2016. The Huskies’ 13 wins are the most in school history and DeBoer is just the third Pac-12 coach to win 13 games in a season, joining Oregon’s Mark Helfrich in 2014 and USC’s Pete Carroll in 2004 (two wins were later vacated).

DeBoer was chosen from a finalist field of David Braun from Northwestern; Jamey Chadwell of Liberty; Eliah Drinkwitz of Missouri; Jedd Fisch of Arizona; Rhett Lashlee of SMU; Chuck Martin of Miami (Ohio); Mike Norvell of Florida State; Barry Odom of UNLV; Nick Saban of Alabama; Steve Sarkisian of Texas; and Jon Sumrall of Troy. Six of those coaches won conference championships, as did DeBoer.

A note to Fish

So look, obviously not the result you predicted or any of us wanted, with regards to Smith and Bolden.

But I want to say this: In a sea of wishy-washy hedgers, you stuck your neck out and made a call and I appreciate that.

Sounds like maybe your info on Smith was right when you reported it, but went south overnight. Not sure on Bolden.

In terms of learning, seems like "follow the visits" may not be the axiom of recruiting that it once was. Between Smith and Bolden, that seems to have been at least partially debunked. Will be tough to follow and predict recruiting in a world where Wells Fargo trucks are parked outside every football dorm. Glad it's you and not me!

Anyway, mainly just a note of thanks for the hard work and courageous calls.

The Faith and Witness of Jimmy Lai

From WSJ today:

Jimmy Lai’s trial on national-security charges began Monday in Hong Kong under a heavy police presence. You’d think he was the leader of Hamas rather than a former newspaper owner. But in the three years that he’s spent waiting for his day in court, the trial has become something the authorities never anticipated: a global stage for Jimmy’s witness for freedom.

This witness includes his stand for free speech, as he watched an alleged world finance center seize his publication, Apple Daily, without a court order or judgment. It includes his role as a champion for the economic liberty that turned Hong Kong into the most prosperous Chinese society the world has known. And it includes his argument that Hong Kong’s people are as worthy of democracy as any.

But there’s one more witness that animates everything he does: his Christian faith. Jimmy wasn’t jailed because his faith was against the law. But he freely accepted handcuffs and prison bars because of his faith.

Jimmy wasn’t always a believer. But in 1997, a week after Hong Kong was handed back to China, he was received into the Catholic Church. He was baptized by his good friend Cardinal Joseph Zen, who has himself been arrested by the government—and was in court Monday to show support. I am Jimmy’s godfather.

Since Jimmy’s arrest, Cardinal Zen has visited him as often as he can. It isn’t well known, but several of those jailed in Hong Kong for pro-democracy activities have been baptized.

These days Jimmy spends much of his time cultivating his new vocation as a Christian artist. He’s pretty good, too, even limited to drawing in pencil on regular, lined paper. Over time the authorities came to see this as a threat and so no longer allow him to share his prison artwork with visitors and correspondents.

Most of all, Jimmy is blessed to have a wife, Teresa, every bit as strong as he is. Teresa told Jimmy when he was arrested that she knew that moment might come the day she married him. Her message: Jimmy, I am your wife, and I will walk this journey with you every step of the way. But you must pick up your cross and embrace it.

The amazing thing is that this proud man has done just that. In an extraordinary podcast he did with former Soviet refusenik Natan Sharansky in November 2020—a month before his arrest—Jimmy was clearly steeling himself for his own imprisonment. He observed that Mr. Sharansky drew strength for his resistance from two blessings the men share: a religious faith and the unbendable love of a good woman.

They discussed how important it is never to back down and to live as a free man even in prison by rejecting the lies the government pushes. Mr. Sharansky wished Jimmy “strength and will” in the trials ahead. He advised him to regard the burden laid on him as a blessing:

“And if you were chosen by the faith, by God, by your people to lead, to be the example of this moment, it’s a great responsibility but it’s also a great joy. So enjoy it!”

Nobody enjoys prison, not Jimmy and not his wife and children. But Mr. Sharansky was on to something. Witness without cost is virtue signaling. Jimmy’s wife and children, by contrast, see their family being redeemed by suffering, even if the world doesn’t understand.

Many don’t. Some friends and acquaintances are baffled that a man worth hundreds of millions, who might have fled to one of his homes in Tokyo or Paris, would exchange that life of comfort for solitary confinement in a prison cell. Many former associates have abandoned him.

Yet through all this Jimmy radiates a peace that, for all his riches, he never had before. He has written that Stanley Prison isn’t so bad because the British built it and the Chinese haven’t got around to screwing it up yet. And he has one message for those who have turned on him: Forgiveness.

On the day of Jimmy’s baptism more than 25 years ago, I confess I looked at him and wondered how much he really believed. There were so many social reasons for him to convert. Many of his friends were Catholic. Even as a nonbeliever, he admired religions for the good they contributed to society. And his wife, a cradle Catholic, was thrilled by his conversion. Today I am ashamed of those doubts.

With this trial Jimmy will finally get his opportunity to speak. He would leave prison in a heartbeat and go home to his loving wife and children if he could. But not at the cost of truth.

The Good Book tells us that love endures all things. Which creates a dilemma for China and Hong Kong with this trial: The more suffering they inflict, the more powerful Jimmy Lai’s witness grows.
