Baseball Home runs, Jamie Arnold gem help No. 4 FSU blow out No. 19 Louisville in series opener

FSU mashed five home runs and Jamie Arnold had one of the better starts in his career, helping the Seminoles blow out No. 19 Louisville on the road Friday night.

FSU has won six straight and is 31-7 (12-4 in ACC)

Baseball Live Updates: No. 4 FSU at No. 19 Louisville (Game 1, Friday at 6 p.m.)

After an unexpected weekend off, the Florida State baseball team begins its stretch run of the regular season this weekend at Louisville.

The No. 4 Seminoles (30-7, 11-4 in ACC) and No. 19 Cardinals (28-12, 10-8) kick off a three-game series at Jim Patterson Stadium Friday at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

FSU enters on a five-game winning streak while the Cardinals are coming off a road series loss at Clemson last weekend. However, U of L is 22-3 in home games this season and has not yet lost more than one home game in the same week this season. Louisville ranks third in the ACC in batting average (.319) and second in stolen bases (85) but is 12th out of 16 teams in fielding percentage (.970), 11th in ERA (5.46) and dead last in walks issued (224, 61 more than FSU).

FSU will maintain its traditional starting rotation coming out of the off week. Junior LHP Jamie Arnold (4-1, 2.40 ERA) will start the series opener for the Seminoles. Louisville has only announced its Friday starter in freshman LHP Ethan Eberle (3-1, 4.56 ERA over 23.2 innings) with both Saturday and Sunday still slated as TBD. Louisville's previous Friday starter, Patrick Forbes, did not start last week at Clemson and his status remains up in the air for this weekend.

With Max Williams out because of his one-game suspension for being ejected from Tuesday's game, FSU is shuffling up its lineup. Chase Williams is starting in centerfield and hitting leadoff while Gage Harrelson moves down from the leadoff spot to Williams' spot in the three-hole.

There were some weather concerns for Friday in Louisville. FSU softball's game at Louisville, originally slated for 6 p.m., has been moved back to an 8 p.m. start. However, things remain on target for a 6 p.m. start on the baseball side at the moment. I'll keep you all updated on the weather situation and provide game updates once things get started in the below thread.

Golf Rain halts ACC championship, FSU men will resume round Saturday morning

FSU sports information:

Due to inclement weather in the area, the second round of stroke play for the No. 10 Florida State men’s golf team at the 2025 ACC Championship was suspended on Friday. Play will resume on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. prior to the third round.

After two weather delays, the Seminoles were on holes eight, nine and 10 before being called back in a third time on Friday.

Luke Clanton saw three birdies on the front nine and was out in 34, while Tyler Weaver carded two through eight holes. Both players are 2-under for the round with Weaver sitting eighth at 3-under, and Clanton is 1-over and tied for 32.

Carson Brewer is 1-over for the round after eight pars on the front nine. Jack Bigham carded a pair of birdies on the front nine and is also 1-over for the round.

Gray Albright is 3-over at the turn.

Roster Management - Needs in the portal

QB
1 - Tommy Castellanos (SR)
2 - Brock Glenn (SO)
3 - Kevin Sperry (FR)

Comments: FSU is not going to sign another QB this year. The QB position is set. They signed a prospect out of Georgia who will take Trevor Jackson spot. (Prediction - O Transfer Portal Addition)

RB
4 - Kam Davis (SO)
5 - Jaylin Lucas (SR)
6 - Roydell Williams (SR)
7 - Caziah Holmes (SR)
8 - Sam Singleton (SO)
9 - Ousmane Kromah (FR)

Comments: I could see Danzy ending up back at RB at some point. I doubt FSU tries and picks up anyone out of the portal. Kromah is going to get a legit shot at winning the job. I still think Kam Davis can do well in this offense. He is a ground and pound type back. I think he can help in short yardage and near the end-zone. I still have faith that Davis will do something at FSU. Lucas needs to be this teams version of Chris Thompson. Holmes and Williams are not the answer. If these guys get major snaps, FSU run game will not be good. Singleton is caught in the numbers. I do think he can be a productive back just not sure it happens at FSU. FSU run game comes down to Kromah living up to his potential. (Prediction - O Transfer Portal Addition)

WR
10 - Duce Robinson (JR)
11 - Squirrel White (SR)
12 - Camdon Frier-(FR)
13 - BJ Gibson (FR)
14 - Lawayne McCoy (FR)
15 - Elijah Moore (FR)
16 - Jayvan Boggs (FR)
17 - Teriq Mallory -(FR)
18 - Tae'Shuan Gelsey (FR)
19 - Micahi Danzy

Comments: When you look at the roster the biggest issue is you have 6 either freshman or red-shirt freshman at WR. White and Robinson are your only two upperclassmen. I talk about Roster managment all the time. This is not what you want at any position. If Bert Reed, Richard Goodman and Rod Owens can be productive FSU than Frier, Gibson, McCoy, Moore and Boggs should all be able to produce. FSU needs someone with some experience so I could see them taking a G5/FCS level receiver to come in and compete for starting minutes. (Prediciton - 1 Transfer Portal Addition)

TE

20 - Landen Thomas-SO
21 - Randy Pittman (JR)
22 - Markeston Douglas (SR)
23 - Chase Lofton (FR)

Comments: I actually like the TE room. Thomas, Pittman and Douglas give FSU three tight ends that MN can trust. The reports I heard about Lofton is that he may be one of the top players to come in this past recruiting class. That is a good thing as Lofton will have a legit shot to start or contribute in 2026. I don't see FSU going after another TE unless it is at discount rate. (Prediction - O Transfer Portal Addition)

OL

24 - Jonathan Daniels (OG/OT) (FR)
25 - Bryson Estes (OG) (SR)
26 - Tye Hylton (OG) (FR)
27 - Manasse Itete (OT) (FR)
28 - Richie Leonard (OG) (SR)
29 - Andre Otto (C/G) (SO)
30 - Jacob Rizy (C) (SR)
31 - Lucas Simmons (OT) (SO)
32 - Jayden Todd (OT) (FR)
33 - Mario Nash (OT) (FR)
34 - Chastan Brown (OT) (FR)
35 - Sean Poret (OG) (FR)
36 - Chavez Thompson (OG/C) (FR)
37 - Luke Petitbon (OG) (SR)
38 - Micah Pettus (OT) (SR)
39 - Adrian Medley (OG) (SR)
40 - Gunnar Hansen (OT) (SR)

Comments: FSU would like to have 19 scholarship lineman. Right now they are at 17. If I had to guess you will have Luke Petitbon (C), Richie Leonard (G), Adrian Medley (G), Gunnar Hansen (OT) and Pettus (OT). I feel that Otto, Rizy, Simmons will all get reps this season. FSU still needs a tackle. (Prediction - 1 Transfer Portal Addition)

Interior Lineman
41 - Jamorie Flagg (DT) (SO)
42 - Darrell Jackson (DT) (SR)
43 - Daniel Lyons (DT) (JR)
44 - KJ Sampson (DT) (SO)
45 - Kevin Wynn (DT) (FR)
46 - Mandrell Desir (DT) (FR)
47 - Tyeland Coleman (DT) (SO)
48 - Jayson Jenkins (DT) (JR)

Defensive Line/Edge
49 - James Williams (SR)
50 - Deante McCray (SR)
51 - Deamontae Diggs
52 - Darryl Desir (FR)
53 - Tylon Lee (FR)
54 - Lajesse Harrold (FR)
55 - Amare Williams (SO)
56 - Jaden Jones (SR)

Comments: FSU needs some guys up front. I like what they have in the interior. I actually think the inside of the DL will be alright. It is outside that I have concerns. Where is the pass rush going to come from. Amare Williams is very gifted but he is now learning a new position. He is probably a year away. (Prediction - 2 Transfer Portal Addition)

LB

57 - Ethan Pritchard (FR)
58 - Elijah Herring (SR)
59 - Caleb LaVallee (SO)
60 - Stefon Thompson (SR)
61 - Justin Cryer (JR)
62 - Omar Graham (JR)
63 - Blake Nichelson-(JR)
64 - Shawn Murphy (JR)
65 - Jayden Parrish (FR)
66 - Timir Hickman Collins (FR)

Comments: With the scheme that FSU runs now, I could see them wanting to add one more backer. I do think they have some capable bodies at linebacker. It will be interesting to see how these guys play in the new scheme. Can they add an upgrade here? If so look for FSU to bring in one more portal backer (Prediciton-1 Transfer Portal Addition)

DB
67 - Ashlynd Barker (JR)
68 - Cai Bates (FR)
69 - Shyheim Brown (SR)
70 - Jamari Howard (FR)
71 - Conrad Hussey (JR)
72 - Quindarrius Jones (JR)
73 - Edwin Joseph (SO)
74 - KJ Kirland (FR)
75 - Ricky Knight (FR)
76 - Charles Lester (FR)
77 - Earl Little (JR)
78 - Jabril Rawls (FR)
79 - Antonio Cromartie (FR)
80 - Gregory Thomas (FR)
81 - Max Redmon (FR)
82 - Shamar Arnoux (FR)

Comments: The scheme FSU runs now they need lots of guys in the back end of the defense. FSU has talent in the secondary. They will probably add a couple of more guys through the portal. Look for them to bring in some safeties. They have plenty of corners. (Prediction-2-3 Transfer Portal Addition)

K/P
83 - Brunno Reus (FR)
84 - Jake Weinberg (FR)
85 - Mac Chiumento

Softball No. 7 FSU returns to play at Louisville on Friday

FSU sports information:

The No. 7 Florida State softball team (40-6, 14-1) will look to stay on top of the ACC standings this weekend as it heads to Louisville to face the Louisville Cardinals (23-21, 6-12) at Ulmer Stadium. The series opener is set for 6 p.m. with Saturday's games at 1 p.m. Both games can be seen live on ACCNX with Suzanne Bush (Play by Play) and Joanna Lane (Color) on the call. Sunday's series finale will be at 6 p.m. on the ACC Network with Pam Ward (Play by Play) and Jenny Dalton-Hill (Color) on the call.

Noles Head to Louisville to Face Cardinals
  • Florida State returns to the diamond this week as they head to Louisville to face on the Cardinals in the second-to-last series of the season.
  • Louisville is 23-21 and 6-12 in the ACC this season.
  • The Cardinals are coming off a series loss to Virginia last weekend in Charlottesville. Louisville won the series opener 6-5 before dropping the final two games of the series. The Cardinals fell on Tuesday night at home to Western Kentucky, 2-0.

What’s At Stake?
  • Once again, FSU has put itself in a prime spot to take home an ACC Regular Season Championship and secure the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament.
  • FSU can clinch the ACC Championship this weekend with a sweep and two losses from Virginia Tech. The Hokies play at Cal this weekend.
  • If FSU wins two out of three against Louisville, a Cal sweep over Virginia Tech and one Clemson loss this weekend against Georgia Tech will give FSU the title.
  • An ACC Regular Season Title would be FSU’s 15th overall and eighth under Head Coach Lonni Alameda.

Noles’ History against the Field
  • FSU leads the series against Louisville 21-8-1.
  • FSU has won five out of the last six games in Louisville.
  • FSU won two out of the three games last season in Louisville.

  • Six different Noles hit 10 home runs, and the team posted a 1.38 team ERA in the four games.

Noles Getting Hot at the Right Time
  • Florida State softball is beginning to look like Florida State softball once again as the Noles enter the final month of the regular season
  • FSU is 40-6 and 14-1 in ACC play. FSU’s 14-1 start is the program’s best start since finishing 24-0 in ACC play in 2017.
  • FSU won 14 consecutive games from Mar. 11-April 2 and have won 29 out of its last 32 games.
  • FSU has won 40 games this season and 17 of them have come via the run rule.

Softball FSU pitcher Jazzy Francik named one of 25 finalists for NFCA Freshman of the Year

FSU sports information:

Florida State freshman pitcher Jazzy Francik was named one of 25 finalists for the NFCA Freshman of the Year award on Friday afternoon. Francik is the ninth Seminole to have been named a Top 25 Finalist for the award. FSU's nine honorees are the third-most in the country. FSU's Jaysoni Beachum won the award last season.

Francik is one of two players from the ACC to make the list and the only pitcher from the ACC to crack the list. The Rockledge, Florida, native has been spectacular in her first season with the Noles. In 68 innings, Francik holds a 1.85 ERA which is the lowest on the team among the pitchers who have thrown 50 or more innings. Francik's 1.85 ERA is also the lowest in the ACC and third-lowest in the country among freshmen.

Francik holds a 7-2 record in her 27 appearances and has recorded six saves this season. Her six saves are the most in the ACC, the sixth-most in the country this season and are tied for the second-most in school history with teammate Makenna Reid. Francik has continued to get better as the season has gone on, and in her last six appearances, she has allowed just two earned runs in 18.1 innings with 17 strikeouts compared to just four walks.

The list for the award will be trimmed to 10 on May 8 with the three finalists being announced on May 22. The winner will be announced in Oklahoma City on May 27 prior to the Women's College World Series.

Sports Business House-NCAA settlement on hold, judge requests changes on roster limits

The latest on the House vs. NCAA case before Judge Claudia Wilken, via Yahoo's Ross Dellenger:

IRVING, Texas — The NCAA and power conferences’ settlement of three antitrust cases hangs in the balance.

In an order issued on Wednesday, a California judge announced that she will not approve the landmark House settlement unless changes are made to new roster limits — a concept the settlement agreement imposes on schools and one that has led to the elimination of roster spots for hundreds and, perhaps eventually, thousands of athletes.

Claudia Wilken, the presiding judge in the case in the Northern District of California, is giving attorneys 14 days to implement a grandfather-in concept to roster limits, assuring those athletes who are on a roster do not lose their spot — something that’s happening across the country as schools reduce their rosters to adhere to the new limits.

The roster-limit concept has, for months now, been targeted by critics as the biggest failure in the settlement. Most of the objections filed against the settlement centered around the roster limitations, which power conference executives pushed for as part of the deal.

FSU volleyball signs transfer setter Nellie Stevenson

FSU sports information:

Coach Chris Poole and the Florida State volleyball team announced the signing of 5-foot-11 setter Nellie Stevenson out of Montana State this morning.

Stevenson began her career with the Bobcats playing in all 33 matches in 2023. She earned 1,049 assists with an average of 8.53 assists per set. Offensively, Stevenson recorded 69 kills and finished third on the team with 34 aces. Defensively, she managed nine matches with double-digit digs and had 44 blocks for the season.

Keeping her assist numbers high, Stevenson added 664 to her career total at Montana State in 2024. She matched her previous season of aces with 34 and totaled 191 digs over 28 matches.

Prior to Montana State, Stevenson competed with the Feather River College Golden Eagles. She helped lead the program to a 34-match win streak and was named CCCAA Tournament MVP. Stevenson was given First-Team AVCA All-America honors and was the Golden Valley Conference MVP.

Before her collegiate campaign, Stevenson was an All-Conference performer at San Leandro High School in San Leandro, Calif.

Tennis Four FSU men's players recognized on All-ACC teams

FSU sports information:

Four Florida State men’s tennis players were recognized as the ACC announced the 2025 All-ACC Men’s Tennis Awards on Thursday afternoon. FSU placed two athletes on both the All-ACC Singles and All-ACC Doubles Teams.

Corey Craig was named to the All-ACC Singles First Team, and Jamie Connel was named to the All-ACC Singles Second Team. FSU has earned four consecutive All-ACC Singles First Team honorees and claimed an All-ACC Singles honoree in every completed season this century.

Craig earned his first All-ACC Singles First Team honor in his first season at Florida State. Craig is ranked as the No. 16 player in the nation and accumulated a 18-6 singles record. The junior won 10 matches this spring with eight Court 1 victories and six wins in conference play. Craig earned 11 ranked wins, including two top-10 victories over fellow first-team honorees Carl Emil Overbeck of California and Samir Banerjee of Stanford.

Connel earned his first All-ACC Singles Second Team honor and recorded consecutive appearances on the All-ACC Singles Team following his third team honor in 2024. The senior is ranked as the No. 44 player in collegiate tennis and earned a 24-9 singles record, marking a third consecutive season with 20+ singles wins. Connel ascended to Court 2 and claimed 12 Court 2 wins this spring with a strong 8-2 record in ACC play. He currently holds a six-match unbeaten streak moving into the postseason with wins over fellow All-ACC honorees Martin Katz of Miami and Trevor Svajda of SMU.

Alex Bulte and Youcef Rihane were named to the All-ACC Doubles Second Team. Florida State has earned All-ACC doubles honors in all three seasons of the award’s existence.

Bulte and Rihane achieved the highest doubles ranking in school history after notching the No. 3 spot on the ITA Doubles rankings list. The senior pairing earned a 19-13 record with 11 Court 1 victories this spring. Bulte and Rihane claimed five ACC wins and eight victories over ranked pairings. The duo went on a deep run in their debut in the NCAA Doubles Championship, winning three matches in three days to reach the semifinals of the tournament. The two became the second FSU pairing to reach the semifinals of the individual championships.

Florida State achieved an 18-8 overall record and is ranked as the No. 19 team in the nation entering the NCAA Tournament. The bracket will be unveiled on Monday during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, starting at 5:30 p.m., with the competition beginning on May 2.

Shaw earned third-team All-ACC singles and All-ACC doubles, with Parra Romero earning third-team All-ACC doubles. It is the first All-ACC honor for both Shaw and Parra Romero.

Shaw, a sophomore, led FSU from the No. 1 position in singles, finishing with a 10-5 record. She began the spring season winning four of her first five matches, all in straight sets. Shaw maintained her early-season momentum in ACC play, winning her first four conference matches, including her first ranked victory of the season over No. 64 Akari Matsuno of Notre Dame. She concluded singles play in the second round of the ACC Women’s Tennis Championship with a victory over No. 111 Alice Otis of Louisville.

Parra Romero and Shaw recorded a 13-4 record in doubles this season and finished with a 6-4 record in ACC play. The duo began their spring season with a 6-1 victory over Florida and earned their first ranked victory, defeating No. 117 Melisa Mekic and Diana Craciun of Alabama State. The pair earned three ranked victories, including two in the top 25, defeating No. 25 Xinyi Nong and Raquel Gonzalez of Miami, and No. 15 Irina Balus and Ellie Coleman of Duke. Shaw and Parra Romero were ranked as high as No. 39 in the ITA rankings poll. The duo also holds the third-longest doubles winning streak in Florida State history at 12 matches.

Football Kez McCorvey views coaching as a calling, and he's back on sideline at North Florida Christian

Kez McCorvey has a fulfilling job, working for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He wasn’t looking to get back into coaching.

But his wife, Loris, was encouraging him. And McCorvey didn’t view the chance to coach at North Florida Christian as a job.

“It was put in a way to where I felt like it was a calling and not a job,” McCorvey said. “I don't know if I'm looking for a job, but I am looking for a calling. And so it felt like a calling.”

Coaching keeps calling McCorvey back again. He will retain his job with FCA, one he’s held for eight years, while also taking over at North Florida Christian in April. It’s the next step back into coaching for McCorvey, a wide receiver who helped FSU win the 1993 national title.

McCorvey has found success at each step in coaching, including Canadian Football League titles as an assistant with Toronto (2012) and Edmonton (2015) as well as a state title as an assistant with North Florida Christian (2018). He also spent time at Bethel (Tenn.) University, running the weight room at all hours and preparing receivers for practice, as well as a year with Middle Tennessee's receivers in 2016.

Baseball FSU made strides to minimize negative effect of one-week layoff on pitchers

The effects of a weekend off can be positive (extra rest, recovery) and negative (reduces build-up, form) on starting pitchers.

FSU had its starters throw extended bullpens this week in an effort to reduce the negative effects entering this weekend's series at No. 19 Louisville.
