Anyone cut the cable completely?

Has anyone using PS Vue on a Fire TV noticed an issue with the DVR randomly pausing on its own after fast forwarding during a recorded show?

We have the newest Fire TV in the bedroom and my wife has pointed out to me that after fast forwarding a show on DVR it randomly pauses for a few seconds and then resumes on its own.

Yes has been happening to me lately too and I have a PS4.

Also, Sony finally fixed the button screw ups that were affecting multimedia remote yesterday. The bugs were from the last major update earlier this week.

I finally cut comcast tv this week.
Went with Roku ultra and sling.

My one complaint, which i knew before jumping, how do I get ABC sports stuff live?

I realize abc isn't on this stuff but is there a pay option for abc sports?

I'm not 100% certain as I haven't done it myself. But I believe PlayStation Vue has live feeds of all of the broadcast channels from many different regional stations and I believe you can use Vue from Roku. I haven't done it yet, but that's what I was planning on doing when my Panama City facility opens.

I don't have a Vue but interesting stuff.

Hoping to avoid an HD antenna as I haven't had much luck with them previously.

With PS Vue, affiliates are dependent on your location. For example, in the metro Atlanta area, I get my local CBS and Fox affiliates. Some cities get them all and some you may get none or different affils Each affiliate negotiates their streaming rights independently, so it's a bit of a mess. I'm fortunate that I can get my locals via antenna. With my Roku TV, they updated the software recently where now you can record OTA signal with a flash drive. It's not exactly a fully functional DVR, but you can time shift up to 90 minutes.

aren't ABC sports available on the watch ESPN app? granted the only ABC things i watch are football and lately NBA so not sure if they have boring stuff like golf on there or not.

Correct, Vue doesn't have all affiliates in all areas. However, YouTube TV does.

YouTube TV is not available everywhere, so that is a bit misleading. I also see that while they offer live streaming in most of their markets, some are listed as "on demand only" like PS Vue.

As for right now, I see YouTube TV is only available in:
  • Chicago
  • Los Angeles
  • New York City
  • Philadelphia
  • San Francisco Bay Area
I believe PS Vue offers all four major local affiliates live in all those cities, minus Los Angeles, which is missing ABC as of now.

One thing to note, which I stumbled upon recently when traveling: Content is restricted outside your home area with PS Vue. With YouTube TV, however, you can watch TV anywhere in the US.

What do you mean your home area? I can watch PS Vue on my phone when I'm out and about. Some channels are restricted, but many are not. I've used it a couple hundred miles away from the house with no issue.

I had issues watching a few shows (cannot remember channels, think one was HBO but I just used HBO Go instead) when I was traveling a couple weeks ago. Got a "outside of home area" message. Just saw on PS Vue FAQ that viewing may be limited when traveling outside home area. I think that may apply to DVR service, though, and not necessarily live TV.

I had been under the impression that Vue is tied more strictly to your home ip. It's not a big deal to me, but I can understand how it might be a problem. On the other hand, pretty much every channel has its own app that can be authenticated with your Vue credentials, so you would still be able to watch on the road.

Vue is also available on the Amazon Fire Stick and Fire Box. I can only get the CBS affiliate live in the Jax area and will be cutting the cable completely in the very near future. Just got the Fire Stick and its performed outstandingly for me so far.

Intriguing. Can you at least manually scheduling it?

Since my HTPC quit on me, looking for a cheap solution to record OTA. I don't need to do it often, so I don't want to incur a Tivo-like monthly expense nor drop hundreds of dollars on hardware. It seems like something that should be easier/cheaper to accomplish than it currently is.

I've got a Fire Box and have been slowly acclimating my wife to it so we can give DirecTV the boot. Thinking about using the VUE service.

I've got the Fire TV box and Sling. Completely done with cable. Hoping to figure out an ABC sports solution before the end of August..

There is no scheduling, unfortunately. It's literally for time-shifting while you are watching. If you're watching something and want to step away for a while you can go back and watch what you missed up to 90 minutes. Nice for fast forwarding through commercials. But that's pretty much it. You lose whatever you had when you change channels. Also, I'm pretty sure it's specific to Roku TV, not the set top box. I have an Insignia Roku TV, with the Roku interface built in. I don't think the stick or box allow this option.

You should be able to stream ABC live sports via the WatchESPN app with your Sling TV credentials.

You can DVR local content if your local affiliates are in a supported market (Tallahassee has CBS only, none of the other stations). For the rest of the content, you can add it to your shows, but you won't be able to access the content immediately after it airs. There's a little bit of a delay until when the content is available for streaming, sometimes it's a couple of hours, sometimes it's a day.

My wife watches This Is Us, which is on NBC, and the she would just watch the show the day after it aired, or she would have to watch via OTA antenna.

The DVR feature from PS Vue is pretty neat in that it's really just giving you access to content, rather than saving shows to your local device.
  • The Pro of that is you don't have a space limit, you can add every show or channel you want.
  • The Con of that is you have to stream everything, which eats up your data. So if you watch a show twice, it doesn't store the content and you use the same amount of data for both viewings.

Lately, I add a ton of shows to my favorites and it's become a much more streamlined viewing than when I had comcast. Instead of worrying about DVR space, I just add movies or shows that I'm interested in and the browse My Shows when I am looking for something to watch.

I also love the "favorite channels" option, which pushes all your favorite channels to the left side of the Channel Guide. What it allows is for you to add only the channels you really watch (maybe 20 or so channels) and that way you don't have to scroll through all of them. They are organized in alphabetical order from left to right, then the rest of the "non favorites" show up to the right side as you're scrolling. Saves a ton of time when looking through the guide, has become one of my favorite features of PS Vue.

As a follow-up to my earlier post about data usage, since that first month and learning about quirks of certain devices not going into sleep mode.

I still wish PS Vue had a max resolution limit like Netflix and YouTube have, but data usage has not been a problem at all since that first month.

I'm into my 2nd year with Vue and they keep adding more and more as time goes on. So far the cost has remained the same.

I am also trying to get my wife into using the Fire Stick and Vue. She's pretty resistant to change.

I am surprised how little publicity PS Vue gets compared to Sling TV, or even DirecTV Now. In my opinion, it's the best service for the money as far as replacing traditional cable/satellite. I think they don't advertise as much as the others and there's some confusion over the "PlayStation" name. I wonder if people think you have to have one of those gaming consoles or be a gamer to use the service. I have never owned or played one and have no interest in them. When I first learned about PS Vue it was only available on the game console, Fire TV, and Chromecast. I tried to start a trial because I have a Chromecast, but I didn't realize you needed to activate your account via the game console or AFTV. I signed up when they released a Roku app last Spring.

I only learned of Vue from you guys on the board. At the time I was considering Sling TV, but went with Vue based on the recommendations of the board. I have considered going with Hulu when it launches nationally, because of the original shows - but I'm not sure I can justify the cost compared to Vue.

Update on Watch espn for abc sports access.

On Sling watch espn for abc is not available without tv subscription. Same as Abc app, not sling compatible only

Hulu TV is launched. Intrigued. It's also $40, with a strong channel lineup and 50 hrs of cloud dvr. The price is pretty solid, if you already subscribe to Hulu (which I do) because it includes the regular Hulu programming. It has the same limited locals issue, including not having ABC in my area.

I get everything that Hulu has for $29.99 with Vue.

Really, you get Hulu content with your Vue subscription? :)

PSVue is $35 now (at least where I live) for the package equivalent to Hulu. The $30 Vue package doesn't have the RSNs, ESPNU, etc.

So like I said, if you subscribe to Hulu already, Vue isn't a better deal.

I also hated the Vue performance on my devices, and the way it worked, so I'm interested in checking out the Youtube and Hulu offerings.

I must be living under a rock, but what content is exclusive to Hulu? Always thought the big benefit with Hulu was to be able to watch on-demand content from TV carriers.

Finding it hard to keep track of all the different streaming options and all their content.

Yeah, I never got the appeal of Hulu. But I don't watch much network tv, and what I do I'm able to pick up with an antenna. I did check out Hulu's live channel lineup for my area. At a glance it looks much like what I get with Vue but more expensive, less devices, limited dvr without paying extra. Also, for me no AMC means no Better Call Saul. No bueno. Only way I can currently watch it on tv is to Chromecast from my phone. I've grown fond of the simplicity fo the Roku remote.

I do think that Hulu has some exclusive shows now, the best known one is Handmaiden or something to that effect. Not a show that I'm familiar with though.

For me and my need, the $29.99 Vue package has me covered.

They have a massive backload of shows, sometimes I can find something on there I can't find elsewhere. At one time they had the Criterion Collection which made it a no brainer. However, since they lost that it's much more iffy. A lot of stuff they used to have I'm seeing duplicated elsewhere. For example, they have a nice selection of MSTK3 episodes, but now Netflix has some of those, as does Youtube.

They do have some original content I like a lot though.

Vue just sent out a letter via email to subscribers that you can now watch the NBA Finals live on the Watch ESPN app. It may be the first step to getting local ABC affiliates streaming on Vue.

You've always been able to do that. Any sports that broadcast on ESPN can be watched on WatchESPN, since ABC is part of the ESPN/Disney family of channels.

I was hoping they'd integrate it into their app for the NBA finals, as WatchESPN has more lag than PSVue, but no dice.

Really hope PS Vue can get those local channels added before football season, particularly ABC.
