My wife and I both went to FSU. She had 4 brothers who all lived in Tally at some point and all huge FSU fans. So one brother in law's son now goes to Clemson and since Clemson won the title last year and our massive drop off this year he is Clemson 24/7. I Clemson this and Clemson that, wearing Clemson gear etc. When I say he was an FSU fan I am talking tons of memorabilia, FSU custom license plate etc. I don't get this and while I may have other teams I like or want to win; there is no way I start rooting for an in conference rival. LR Verdict

I've seen a lot of people adopt their kids' schools teams. Maybe not a complete switch but at least dual rooting interests.

I mean, we attended FSU 20-30 years ago. Your school vs your child? I like to see my kids happy, and if they're happy when their teams win, then so am I.

You're allowed a one-time switch of allegiances based on where your kids go to school, IMO.

While it would annoy me too, I don't think he's technically done anything wrong.
The annoying part would be if he would have been so gung ho if Clemson was not doing so well.

Fair enough but to be an FSU fan since the 80s, spend a ton of money on gear, shirts, tickets, a SC license plate that has FSU on it etc. and then to just switch doesn't make sense to me. I get maybe hoping Clemson does well or enjoying their games; but to just dump FSU??? I know I am a fiercely loyal person, once you are in the circle; so maybe I am the outlier but while I may not give FSU the attention I typically do when they are a solid team, there is no way I just decide to go all in on another team. Let alone a conference rival.

I guess he didn't go to FSU? If you're not an FSU alumnus than I guess care who's walmart stuff you buy. I'd be a little bent if they were grads.

As for fanship, everyone wants to cheer for a winner. I grew up in Georgia and by proximity I was always sort of a Bulldog fan, so they have always been my SEC team. They have done less with more for the past 15 years than any other team out there, so now that we are having a down year and they are putting it all together, I'm cheering for them and have found myself to be more interested in their games on Saurday's than ours.

I'm not running out buying Bulldogs gear or anything, but if I only had our games to look forward to I'd be beating my head against the wall.

I would agree with that only for the time that child was in the school and only tepidly so then. I remember when my son was getting recruiting letters in high school. He asked me what I would think if he signed with uf. I told him that I would be a fan of his mainly and for his team secondarily for his time there. But I would not give up my allegiance to FSU regardless.

My family had that situation a few years back. My brother & I both graduated from FSU in the early 80s, and all of my immediate family (parents, siblings, and their offspring) have all been FSU fans since that time frame or earlier. But my brother's daughter ended up not only going to Auburn - but was a cheerleader there for a few years, including the year we faced them for the National Championship.
Some of the family pulled for her team to win that game; she damn well knew that neither her Uncle Sea nor her dad was on her side that night.

I’m in the same boat, parents are from Georgia and grew up Georgia fans. All my uncles and cousins are still diehard fans. It wasn’t until my oldest sister attended FSU that we as a family officially made the switch.

Once the playoffs started last year I was pulling hard for the Falcons. My Dad Still roots for them and has zero love for the Bucs. I’m the only person in family who follows them.

Here are the real strange ones.

I had a roommate who was, and Still is, a diehard turd fan. But he and his brother attend FSU and were both in fraternities. They had a great experience while at FSU but still to this day have ZERO love for their athletic program and will dog it at the drop of a hat.

Makes no sense.

That is kind of where I am. My daughter has Michigan on her top 5 list; solely based on their ranking with her major. I bought her a Michigan t-shirt when I fly through Detroit and this was when we knew we were playing them in a bowl game. I figured eh Michigan is a once and a while game for us, no harm no foul. On the other hand if she was big on Clemson, uf, um or a few other schools while I would pay for her education; there would be a zero tolerance policy for wearing the team gear in my home.

Really? You're going to ban her from wearing her school gear when she's home for Thanksgiving her freshman year? C'mon...

Rules, man, rules!

Yeah, I've noticed this too...I've found it a little crazy. I get it if you went to North Texas or something, and you adopt a big time program because your kids go there. But I was shocked to see my boss switch from Georgia to 100% Clemson because his daughter went there.

That is just 100% not me...not a drop of it. I was shocked how many people thought I became an Alabama fan when my daughter went there. I had people at work giving me condolences when they lost to Clemson last year. I had to straight up correct that notion...I was pulling for Clemson all the way. The idea that it was just assumed opened my eyes.

I don't know...it would never cross my mind. If it wasn't a program I hated (Alabama), I could see having a little more affinity for them if my kid went there, but throwing over my allegiance and alma mater? Nope, would never even occur to me.

Not saying you have to switch or you should switch if your kids go to the school...just that is a one-time acceptable exemption if you choose to.

I think I would say "secondary adoption" more than switch though, right? You don't have to stop rooting for your primary team because your kid now goes somewhere different.

Notre Dame is the school/team that I dislike the most - I hope for their failure and embarrassment at every opportunity. However, I recognize that it's a pretty good school. I told NDallasDaughter that if she were to go to Notre Dame, that I'd root for them.

Maybe my case is different because I didn't go to a competing school, but I figure of my kid and money are going there, that I should root for them - for the time being, at least.

Yep. Sorry but that is how I roll. I have a few relatives that are gator fans and the same rule applies. If they think they can skirt the rule or forget I will throw them a shirt from my closet to put on; or they can go shirtless or just leave. There is only one exception and that is my mimi (grand mother). She went to uf and really never cared about football, until Tebow showed up. I cut her a little slack since she knows nothing about uf football other than Tebow and my mimi is tough as nails, sure I want to mess with her.

By the way my BIL is going to the game this weekend and pulling for Clemson. NO way a true Nole fan does that.

I'm certain the switch was made easier by clembo's rising success on the field.
If they were still routinely clemsoning (more than once a year) I hardly think he would have abandoned FSU so easily.

Once he escapes that dump of a village, he'll look back on this whole decision as a childish indiscretion.

Smh...

P.S. You sure you're not from Alabama?

My son goes to NC State. He's been an FSU fan since birth. He's still an FSU fan, though he wavers a little bit when FSU plays NC State.

I went to multiple schools - GA Tech, UWF, FSU, Kennesaw State. Because my mom went to FSU, I've always been an FSU fan. Sometimes I cheer for GA Tech, but there's no special feeling for them. Heck, sometimes I cheer against them. I rarely cheer for NC State.

Basically, I'm an FSU fan, first and foremost. My second favorite team is whoever is playing the gators. After that, I pull for the ACC against other conferences. This weekend I'll grit my teeth and cheer for Notre Dame, though that's like deciding between a migraine and toothache.

Nope. For the record if she or family members want to talk trash I am good with that, if they want to text when they beat us have at it, want to brag about how awesome their team is go for it. What you won't do is wear a rival team shirt in my home. I have considered making them salute my FSU flag as they walk up my stairs; but that may be taking things to far.

Speaking of bama fans, the Panhandle is overflowing with them. None of the bama fans I know actually went there. I'm pretty sure at least half of them couldn't find Tuscaloosa on a map. I think a lot of them were gator fans a few years ago.

I don't take it that seriously. I will always pull for FSU having graduated from there. I won't change my allegiance no matter what my kids end up doing. I also would expect them to support the teams of the school(s) wherever they end up at. Since we live in Georgia, I'd imagine it will not be FSU. We can have a friendly rivalry if our teams ever meet up. I'm sure I'd be fine wearing the other school's colors if I attended a game that wasn't against FSU.

The schools with a football program that my son is considering are FSU, Auburn and Clemson. Wherever he goes I will root for that team UNLESS they are playing FSU. Had UF been in the mix I don't know I could say the same thing.

If your daughter goes to Clemson or florida you’re not going to forbid her from wearing a shirt from her school when she comes home. You’re just not.

Well glad to know your the expert on what I would and wouldn't do. Amazing talent you have there on knowing decision or actions people take without ever meeting them.

Was in the liquor store before the Miami game standing at the counter waiting to be rung up when a conversation started between several of us. Most were FSU fans in a hurry to get home before the game started. One was a Bama fan who said he graduated from there in the 90's. I looked at him and said, "Oh, you're the one? Never met a Bama fan who actually attended school there." Everyone in line had a chuckle at his expense. He even gave an acknowledging smile.

I fully expect my kids to switch allegiances to their school when they go. I was raised a Tennessee fan, and retained it as a secondary interest even during and after college, but I no longer hold any affinity for them.

Of course, my one daughter adopted Georgia Tech over FSU when she was about 3 years old for some reason, and has always rooted for GT against FSU, including (quietly) right in the middle of the FSU section during the infamous blocked kick return a couple years ago. Still her first choice 15 years later...a couple more months to find out if she makes it.

It took a while to scrub the Alabama off, but I finally realized that sports are entertainment. I watch football to be entertained, and if FSU or UCLA isn't entertaining me, then I don't watch them though I always want them to do well. I do have a rooting hierarchy: UCs, CSUs, and Florida SUS schools (except UF) over everybody; Alabama schools next; public schools over private schools; military academies; Tech schools; underdogs; and then obscure schools.

Look, you're either joking or you have some issues.
Well guess I have some issues; because I am serious. My kids aren't coming in to my house wearing uf, Clemson, um and maybe another team or 2 gear. It is really that simple. I will say I have told my kids this from a very young age and that if they bring over friends that wear that stuff I will talk some trash; just not so much this year. Have said to my kids when they wear a certain color of regular clothes something along the lines of "you know that is real close to that nasty gator orange, you don't want people to think you are stupid do you". Of course if this were the only issues I had then I would be real happy.
One of my best friends is a gator we have known each other for 30 years. One Christmas he sent me a gator blue football. I gave that thing to my dogs and put treats in it so they would tear it apart. After they destroyed it I sent him a picture and said this is what happens when you bring gator blue into my house.

Jk, I actually half went to GT for a semester. How do you half go to a school? You take a semester ostensibly at GT while you’re working for Kodak in Atlanta during the Olympics but the campus is mainly shut down due to Olympic athletes using the dorms and whatnot so you have GT professors teaching at what I think is now called Georgia Perimeter College or something to that effect. Ie some %*%*y former jumped up community college on the outskirts of Atlanta where the athletes are not living.

Edit- I just looked it up out of curiousity because they keep changing names but apparently now it’s Georgia State University-Perimeter College. So it was half that and half GT. Doesnt matter, I just needed a couple of requirements to get into FSU’s Finance school the following semester.
