Anyone recommend a good ruggedized tablet/phone? We're thinking of picking up a few of the new Trimble R1 Receivers and while they will pair with any android or iOS device I thought that it would be a good idea to get a few more rugged devices for the field. Anyone have anything they've used before and recommend?
We've been demoing the R1 the past few days with TerraFlex and it's working pretty well for our needs. Sales guy is going crazy trying to upsell us on more Geo7s but we just don't need decimeter accuracy for the type of work we do.

What are you trying to do? are you in Tallahassee by chance?

We've odrered several of the Yuma2. Configuring forms was a pain and some issues with losing contact with the receiver, but I understand they're working well now.

We really need to know the need before a product can be figured out. The GPS receiver the OP is considering is sub meter as is the Trimble unit he mentioned... That unit is a 10k dollar unit and the gps is probably 4 grand alone.

Now if he needs a slightly less accurate unit that is still very accurate I have a much more price friendly ruggedized device in mind.

The R1 unit I'm talking about is their new receiver. It's a bring your own device deal. It runs for about $2500 and delivers sub-meter accuracy, or sub 50cm if you pair it with their real-time correction service.
We've been pairing it with our cell phones and running TerraFlex on them. I like the Yuma, but it's overkill and runs about $3500 if you want one with a cell modem. I'm just looking for something more like a rugged cell phone. More like their Juno, but less expensive.
We do environmental services. We need sub-meter GPS , but not survey grade equipment.

We have a couple of those..........and like most things at my company they are collecting dust. But most people I've talked with, that actually use them, really like them.

Belem, not knocking anyone here, but I would ask this in an ESRI forum,,,,,,,,or Intergraph forum, or (insert GIS software).

Edit: I didn't finish reading the post. We're doing a total IT assessment here so I can give you the details for what they're accessing next month, but other than that I can't help you out.........sorry.

Check out the F4 Devices Flint or Forge. Both are a direct Juno competitor and cheaper. Plus a Tallahassee based company so there is that. I believe GPS is better than juno but not sub meter still. It's worth calling regardless... the person you will talk to, Tom, is well versed and could point you in the right direction with a quick chat.

The Flint looks interesting. Do you know a ballpark on the cost? I don't care about the GPS because I'd be pairing it with the Trimble R1 receiver via bluetooth to get real-time ~50cm.

Call and see what you can get. Tell Tom you are from warchant and I'll give him a shout out to let him know I sent you his way. I'm his go to software guy.
