Hockey season is once again upon us!!!!!!

Who on earth would replace MA Fleury right now? I know you have a grudge against him but the guy is out of his mind hot. They had no business winning game 1 and no business making OT in game 3.

Potentially devastating to Pens, looked like an easy round to conf finals. No way without Crosby and all their injuries.

Hit was awful, he was first cross checked which is why he lost his balance and was slipping, lucky didn't tear his knee. But the second hit was scary dirty. It happened fast sure, but I expect a long suspension.

Fleury has been abnormally good so far but once Murray healthy hes still only shot in last two rounds.

Pens must win game 4, Crosby supposedly at least up and about today, better sign than last concussion.
NHL disagreed. No additional punishment.

I honestly don't see it that way and I have no dog in the fight. For some reason Crosby was going down. When you look at it in super slow mo it actually looks like he may be flopping. Niskanen is coming in and there is no way to avoid that collision.
All in all, playoffs have been very good so far this year. Even how some of the first series were lopsided, the games themselves were pretty darn good. Even with the bolts out this is still the best hockey to be had.

I agree on this, I didn't see malicious intent. It's hockey folks. You've seen what's happening in football with the targeting rule. I wouldn't have a problem with it in the most egregious cases, but time and time again I've seen bad calls after a ten minute delay reviewing the call. How many games have swung on a inadvertent high stick call? The delay of game calls, ugh, that really hurt Boston.
Back to the actual games, Ducks made Talbot look human in game 3, I think the 3 day break is advantage to him and the Oilers. You have to stick with Fleury now, I'm glad I don't have to make that call!

Hockey is by far the most difficult sport to officiate. I would like to see them adjust goalie interference but more than anything they need to return some judgment to these delay of game calls.

When virtually every penalty is at ref discretion, this one should be too. I get high sticking, no problem. Delay of game should not be done the same way, it hurts the game overall.

Some game 7's on tap, Oilers win at home, didn't realize the Ducks are in danger of being eliminated at home for the fourth straight season. Preds win in six and await the winner. Caps force 7 and really seem more fresh than Penguins. Rangers and Sens do battle tonight, why do I find myself rooting for all the US teams, especially since Canada hasn't won a Cup since whenever?

Because the Canadians just outlawed Mothers day!;)

Pittsburgh prevails in a fairly even contest with Fleury making some great stops that Holtby could not match up with. The Pens coaching and training staff are doing a tremendous job managing workloads without Letang.

I got to see part of the Anaheim game which was competitive, then the Ducks just strangled Edmonton. Kudos to them, they are a deep team and will have a good battle with Nashville. In a couple years John Gibson will probably be the best American goalie.

Death, taxes, and Ovy's Caps watching the conference finals on tv. :D

Stunned that the decimated Pens won game 7.
Fleury actually played 4 great games. Murray finally healthy but I actually would take it a game at a time and have a short leash with Fleury. When hes bad it's obvious.

With so many Pens banged up and new lines each night, im wondering if they suddenly get very hot offensively vs Senators as guys are returning now.

He appeared and at times disappeared but you could say the same for Backstrom, Oshie, Orpik, and even Holtby (who is pretty solid). Ovie will always get the attention and that's the reality...but I'd say this was a solid playoffs for him but he didn't elevate some other players (and they didn't elevate themselves). I give more credit to Pitt and Fleury than take away from Washington.

Caps controlled the games for long stretches and outshot Pitt in every single game.

As I suggested Ottawa could make noise this year (they already have) and they have enough net presence to affect Pittsburgh, especially without Letang. I wouldn't discount the things Ottawa did that Washington didn't. Karlsson has had some rest and maybe a bit healthier. The Pitt staff did a tremendous job in the Caps' series and really Fleury was the MVP.

There is no sane coach who would put a hot goalie (with a streaky personality) on a short leash - it's asinine to even suggest. Fleury is a terrible puck-handler that's about as far as anyone should go in suggesting anything about his play. He's seeing the puck well, anticipating, and doing a pretty good impersonation of Hasek right now. Only a fool would mess with it.

Nolemoretears,
I agree id keep starting Fleury, but im not sure how unusually good people realize his play has been. Hes been bad for years and only injury gave him this chance. Fleurys reg season save % was 37th at .909 right by career .912, (playoff career .908). These Playoffs its .927, against good competition and without some key defenders.
Honestly no one saw this coming from Fleury and his long history suggests it won't continue(though i hope it does).

The amazing thing is Fleury has been nowhere near as good as Pekka Rinne.
.951 are you kidding me?

Out west it's nice to see Getzlaf maybe get a shot at the Cup - he's been one of the best in the playoffs this year and is generally underrated as a player. Not sure if they can break through Pekka Rinne and the choking style of Nashville but we'll see how good Randy Carlyle is in his second go-round with the Ducks. Special teams will be a big deal, you have to keep the preds from scoring there.

He also faced way tougher shots than Rinne. At this point Rinne is your Conn Smythe winner.

I didn't see this Fleury coming either but did you see Matt Murray winning a Cup last year? You go with the horse that brung ya...Fleury may fall back to earth but most certainly you don't put him on a short leash. That is a coaching mistake of the highest order because it affects the entire team mentality.

Murray I didn't see winning the cup, but hes got a ceiling from day 1 Fleury never had, so i was ecstatic they stuck with Murray last year.
Murray in AHL you could see the ceiling, carried it right into NHL. I think Murray will be an all timer in 15 years.

I haven't seen too much Nashville but they look to be suffocating on D.

Yeah, living near Washington as a Boston sports fan, well, they just hate us, lol. The Redskins maybe won DC's last title in the 90's? This year Fleury goes Tim Thomas on them, Ovie didn't produce and now apparently he was injured during the series. Now it's on Ottawa to bring Canada their first cup since since 1993. For some reason that year really stands out to me, lol.
NMT, good point about Getzlaf, I watched all of game 4{?}, I believe he had 4 points. They could have used couple days rest against the Preds, who kicked back most of this week. Congrats to the Erie Otters, who win the Ontario Cup last night.

Charlie Ward and Patrick Roy my man...

The preds are just rolling. While Subban and Rinne are big reasons in the end this is really Peter Laviolette's vision, and there's a lot of people who really know hockey who didn't see that coming, me included.

Pitt has the horses to pick Ottawa's 1-3-1 apart but Ottawa has a few tricks up its sleeve. Karlsson is arguably the world's best but there is more to this team which is why I thought they could make a run. The key is if Craig Anderson can stop the odd man chances Pitt is sure to get. Pageau will disrupt one of their best 2 lines and maybe bury a couple of his own.

Ottawa suffocates Pitt who has 3 goals total in 3 games. Here's a classic example of pulling a goalie having nothing to do with the goalie's performance. It's about the only thing a coach can do in-game to change momentum or send a message. Pitt was just awful.

Pitt is showing fatigue on D, the loss of Letang is tarting to mount. Pageau and others really frustrating Crosby/Malkin/Kessel especially. Could we see Ottawa vs. Nashville?

Crosby realized there was a series just in time. His allergic to shooting and attacking the net 1-3 better not return. Pitt needs Crosby to be aggressive and not try to pass the puck into the net.
Though Pens scored 3 goals last night theyre still missing a ton of great chances. Luck has to turn around soon. I expect an even better Pitt at home in game 5.
Murray looked pretty good getting back into starting mode.

Both series have been competitive, although I'm starting to think there's a pro Canada conspiracy with the refs after seeing Ryan behead Ruhwedel with an elbow and Pburg ending up shorthanded. They can't afford to lose anymore dman. Sullivan switches gkeeps after Fleury got shelled and it went smoothly. Ducks almost blow a 2 goal lead but get lucky in OT and Preds suffer a blow losing Johansen for the series.

Not sure what you're talking about with Crosby. He's scoring on the PP, disrupting and antagonizing Karlsson, using his speed, and attacking. He's second on the team in shots (sitting out 1 game) and better than Kessel or Malkin in shooting %.

It's not always offensively that an aggressive mindset appears in the game. Crosby does have things that he can work on but offensive decision making is not one of them. He feels the game as well as anyone in the last 20 years.

I'm not sure I've seen a worse job of officiating than game 4 in Nashville. Anaheim lost their cool but for very good reason, refs were off the rails in the 3rd period. It sort of all worked out in the end but it was bad for the league to watch that job.

Wow, Sissons with the hat trick and the Preds advance, great game, watched the last half or so. Hot goalie, what are you going to do, meanwhile Gibson sits out the last two games for the Ducks. Good series but had the potential to go seven. Still trying to figure out what happened to Ottawa In Pittsburgh, it looked like they tried to emulate Pittsburgh's game and got bitch slapped. Look for more of the 1-3-1 that has got them this far. I would suspect Ottawa has become Canada's team for now, despite Toronto and Montreal protestations.

I think we'd likely have 2 game 7's if John Gibson was healthy but congrats to the Preds who have been the most consistent team in these playoffs.

Looking forward to game 7 in Pitt tomorrow! The home favorites have obvious advantages, but like I mentioned earlier Craig Anderson can get streaky hot. Murray and Fleury have played equally well (last night's second goal was one Fleury probably stops because he's more aggressive). Murray has a style better suited to Ottawa so keep him in...

Tough to beat game 7 going to (at least) 2OT. I care nothing about either team, but will still stay up to the end.

Gotta give Senators credit, I felt like Pens outskated, outshot, out played them thoroughly in 7 games and it came down to OT.

Pens continue to miss the better scoring chances which will not get it done vs Preds. Breakaways and pucks off the post need to be put away in Finals. I remember the first 5 minutes of this series, Pens hit 2 cross bars, and i was thinking uh oh.

Murray was great, .950% since taking over.
Malkin needs to stay out of the sin bin, cant keep giving pps, but was good offensively. Crosby got better as series went on.

Pens need these 3 days off badly, defense has to keep grinding and improving, don't like giving up goals so quickly after scoring.

Should be a fun Cup, can Rinne cap off this all time goalie run?

A great game 7. Pitt dominated play but Ottawa was scrappy. Full marks to Erik Karlsson for a brilliant playoffs.

I wouldn't call Murray great at all - he's been very average, the high save% is because Ottawa didn't generate very good scoring chances. He gave up easy rebounds and failed to locate the puck on some important occasions, Ottawa just wasn't skilled enough to take advantage.

I'll put it this way: if Murray was in goal for the same Caps series then Pitt is watching the Cup on TV, no doubt about it. It's amazing what Pitt is doing on D with spit and glue holding things together.

The "new" Canadian Anthem

O Canada!
Another year is blown!
Without the Cup, the Yanks continually own
With mourning hearts, we slowly sink,
93' is but memory,
But we swear to god,
O Canada, the Cup one day we will free!
God damn those yanks, stealing what is ours,
O Canada, we'll buy the Cup, if need be,
O Canada, we'll STEAL the Cup, if need be!

Ouch, five goals on TWELVE shots last night as the Pens steal game 1. Did Nashville have a goalkeeper, or did they just pile some gear up in front of the net & lean a goalie stick against the top post?

What a bizarre game, I didn't even know what to say. Pens literally took 37 minutes off, without a shot, and scored 5 goals on like 12 shots.

I expect a more even performance tonight, hoping Rinne luck is gone for good

That was a weird game. Nashville owned that game and came away a loser. Rinne looked very unlike what he has looked like the rest of the playoffs. That said as a hockey fan without a dog in the fight there were a couple things that I would have a beef with if I was a Preds fan. First the disallowed goal due to offsides. Unless Toronto has different shots from what NBC has, I don't know how you can overturn the call on the ice. Every view I saw, was so inconclusive that there is no way to overturn that. The penalty on Jarnkrok was ridiculous. Guy falls down and Jarnkrok was close so they call the penalty. Horrible. That said Neal was stupid for the cross check, but it should have been a 5 on 4 PP not 5 on 3. Between those two calls and the own goal that was kicked in, the game really should have been the Pred's game. Oh well, I am just really glad I have no skin in the game, or I would have been pissed.

Nashville has plenty more than their share of calls go their way. Way more than the what has gone against them. If I'm a Nashville fan then I'm pretty happy overall. They played their game and negotiated the pace and style. On the other hand Pitt was tired and outplayed and got a win so they would also be pleased. Gonna be a good next few games.

I like the cohesive nature of what Nashville is doing, not as talented obviously but playing the best team hockey.

Preds definitely know they cant skate with Pens, love it, juat hope no Penguins get hurt.

9 goals by Pens, 0 by Crosby so far including a brutal miss last night with Rinne flailing. Crosby is due to breakout, and so is their power play which i think will continue to look different lineup wise. Its too good to look off for long.

Rinne is a hot mess but that crowd is incredible so Itll be tough to grab game 3.
Murray is getting better and better

If the officials don't get control, the on ice muggings will just get worse. Some of the things not called last night that were right in front of the refs was astounding. Putrid is how it was described during the first intermission.

Yeah, Nashville has to be frustrated, they've played well but had some glaring breakdowns in the 3rd period. They'll have two days to get their minds back on track, especially Rinne. It's a shame he hasn't been up to snuff and has been the victim of some friendly fire.

Nashville still playing well, now it's starting to show on the scoreboard. Murray continues to be pretty average but it's certainly not all on him. We'll see if the pens' D can pick themselves off the mat one last time in game 5. You have to figure Nashville style plus the other 7-game series is taking a toll on Pitt.

Phil Kessel, where are you?
