I have finally had it with DIRECTV and the outrageous fees they charge. I have questions, hope someone can help. I want to cut je cord but I am uneducated in this area.

The channels most needed, can I get them? Thru who?
Locals
ESPN family of channels for football
FS1
FOX Business
Fox News
HGTV
FOOD NETWORK
DIY
Hallmark
HBO

The big problem will be getting the locals unless you're close enough to use an antenna.

But I used Sling streaming over a Roku Premiere Plus over the weekend as I fled Tally and it worked fine for the rest of the channels you mentioned other than HBO which you can get by itself I believe.

Playstation Vue gets you all those except Hallmark...and ..you're welcome for losing that one.
I now get all my locals on Vue as well.
I stream it on my PS4 as well as on two Amazon Firesticks and my phone.
This.

PS Vue is the best and it's not close

Hallmark on the "most needed" list. :D

I have vue and it's the best out of all the cord cutting options. I am still not happy with the dvr situation but hope it improves. The guide works well on ps4 and not so much on Roku. I tend to watch it on the Roku more as it has all my other channels on it.

What are we talking about in terms of costs?

How much for the devices? (Roku, etc.)
How much for monthly subscription costs to various services?
How much for stand-alone monthly internet service?

Is there THAT much savings for cutting the cord, considering you still have to pay someone for internet service (which is pretty damn convenient through the cable providers)?

Good questions, and the answer obviously depends on your current setup. If you only watch cable and don't stream anything (i.e. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc.), then you'd probably have to invest in some hardware like Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, etc. There are simple "stick" devices that cost $30-$40 that do the job. Likewise, there are now quite a few options when it comes to live-streaming tv providers. Each has its pluses and costs range from $20 for the lowest Sling TV tier to over $70 for PS VUE and DirecTV Now packages that rival what you'd get with cable/satellite. Internet prices also vary by location, if you even have competition in your area, and many other factors. So it's impossible to give you a specific answer without knowing the details of what you're paying now for everything you get, what channels are must-have for you, etc. One big advantage to me about the streaming services that should not be overlooked is there is no service contract, no equipment that you lease. You have nothing tethering you to them and can bounce from month to month depending on if you even need service. You can add and drop by sports season if that's all you care about. You can add HBO when a show you like coming out, drop it as soon as the season ends. Just re-activate your account whenever you need to.

There is no option anymore for Hallmark unless you subscribe to cable, DirectTV, Dish network, something like that.

If you have a username/password from someone else's cable account, you can download the Hallmark app and watch it on your phone/tablet. That's it though, no way to stream it on TV as of now.

Yes, I have a wife in the dwelling (no pics) and you do not mess with her Hallmark Channel. We have been cable free about a year only because of Kodi though, the game is changing with Kodi so we are fixing to have to go back to cable subscription just to have the Hallmark Channel which really isn't bad because we are paying $90/month for internet only, they sent us a bundle package offer for same internet speed/cable tv/home phone (don't need) for $115 a month on a 12 month contract only.

I've never tried any of them, but I have a friend that uses Sling. It definitely has Hallmark and Hallmark Movies. He does have to switch his package around for football season to get ESPN. Here's a list of their channels: https://www.sling.com/c/channels?classification=us

I recently did this and decided to go with Youtube TV..I get locals, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, FS1, FS1, CNBC...etc etc. $35 a month plus tax. Can use up to 6 devices. Also get a Google Chromecast and can cast whatever you are watching to your TV. It has worked out well for me so far.

The critical concern for me is that I rarely watch live tv so I can watch when I want and, more importantly, breeze through commercials. Do any if these streaming services include something like a DVR or other means to record shows, sports, etc.?

All except Directv Now have a DVR of some sort, and Directv Now is supposed to be adding DVR soon.

Still not cheaper than hat I pay for DirecTV. When that happens, I'll cut too.
