Jacksonville, FL is buzzing folks

Grew up in Tampa, but whenever we were in the car headed to relatives in SE Georgia, Dad always turned him on so we could listen. The Big Ape, I think the station was called?
Right and they're on 95.1 fm now, @saenole. And they use the same Tarzan sound effect they used when I arrived in 1988.

For you youngsters, I'm talking late 50s, early 60s. We could also occasionally get late-night broadcasts out of Chicago and Nashville, but I don't remember the name of those stations.

Wasn't there a WGTO out of n. central Fla? Seems like I would listen to them on my trip northward to Tally.

Ummm....seems to me we were called out earlier in this thread...so I'll always respond to a friendly call out. Is any NFL team and their fanbase proud of their history, either recent or distant....I think so...whether you're a Patriots fan or a Jets fan. Twenty eight teams since the merger in 1970 have won at least one Conference title except the Browns, the Texans, the Lions and dare I say....your Jags. So...in order to be proud of one or more Super Bowl titles...winning an AFC Championship seems like a good place to start. I know the predicted response...that the Jags have only been in existence since 1995 and the Texans in 2002....the Dolphins had five AFC titles and two Super Bowl titles in that same timeframe.

If we sound like the Golden Domers....I suppose I can counter with you all sounding like UCF fans...

Better luck next year...and in your race to distance yourself from the ignominious group of Lions, Texans and the Browns...

Go Noles....and in closing....I am very proud and continue to be of not only of our "recent" 2013 title...but the 1993 and 1999 titles as well...in spite of those occurring nearly 20 to 25 years ago...I'm sure you are as well.

I'll go you one further, I was a fan of the Noles before Bobby Bowden was the coach.

WLS 890 AM in Chicago is likely one of them. I could pick it up in Tallahassee in the 80s.

The Nashville station we listened to in the 50s and 60s was WLAC. It played R&B material that wasn't getting any air time on most stations in the south. The most famous disc jockey was John R, a white guy from South Carolina who we all thought was black.

Hell, I was in school when Bill Peterson was coach.

Yoda says, "Old Seminole Ed is."
Ah, but were you a fan of the team? My BIL was there before BB as well and went to one game the whole time. He invited some members of his group (some city planning pro org I guess) and the ticket office gave them a block of seats. Gave.

Before Bobby arrived, FSU was going to drop football, especially after the Larry Jones fiasco. Lots of empty seats during the 2 year run of 1-21. Only win was on the road vs. Miami on a Friday night.

My ole man would not leave a game until the final tick. We sat thru every second of every home loss in the 0-11 and 1-10 seasons. We also enjoyed plenty of good games as well. ‘67 thru 2008ish season tix for my folks. Pops was in the second year of men coming home to a newly energized FSU. My first game was in ‘66.

Urban myth. They were NOT going to drop football. Some namby pamby types were discussing it but they were quietly told to hush up.

Kind of funny how these little stories develop a life of their own, huh? As noted, this was never true, but huge throngs of people still believe otherwise.

Not sure of the urban myth status but it was a regular story in the Times Union. Of course, the TU is a gator rag but take it for what it was worth.

Laughing at Jags fans that don't like the Duval cheer! I am not a Jags fan but actually like that chant. I like yelling it for kids from Jacksonville too. So DJ Matthews does something well he should get the Duuuuuvalllll? Chant. Much easier to say than Jacksonville. And as 12 noles said it has nothing to do with the actual county you live in. The name of the team is Jacksonville, not Jacksonville and surrounding areas. Shoukd they no longer be the Jacksonville Jaguars and try to be called the location of where every fan resides. It's ok to not like the cheer, but I get the concept and reason.
