The Florida State softball team begins its 2024 season in less than a week next Friday in the JoAnne Graf Classic.

Before that, though, fans will get a preview of this year's team, which begins the season tied for third in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll, Saturday as the Seminoles are participating in their annual Garnet and Gold Scrimmage/Fan Day event at JoAnne Graf Field.

The scrimmage will begin at 2 p.m. and I'll be there in person providing updates. Here are the starting lineups for the scrimmage as shared by FSU sports information:

Team Garnet

Mudge – LF
Dack – C
Beachum – 3B
Danley – 1B
Bueno – 1b
Hartley – 2B
Potter – SS
Frey – RF
Belviy – CF

Reid – P
Royalty – P
Balk – P

Team Gold

Ross – 1B
Kerr – CF
Harding – 3B
Edenfield – C
Flaherty – 2B
Torres – SS
Harp – LF
Wacaser – RF

Reid – P
Gooden – P
Wilson - P

They just held a moment for silence for Mike Martin before today's scrimmage. Lonni Alameda talking about how he helped this softball staff grow as coaches when he was FSU's baseball coach.

"We're going to miss him but we'll keep his legacy going by being great Seminoles."

Mercer transfer Annie Potter just made a nice clean play at shortstop on a hard-hit ball up the middle by Jahni Kerr. Whoever replaces Josie Muffley at short has some huge defensive shoes to fill, but Potter may be up for the task.

Freshman Ashtyn Danley starting in the circle for the Garnet team in the top of the first. She retired the first two batters but then allowed a laced double over the centerfielder's head by Kalei Harding.

Michaela Edenfield gets a hold of one to opposite field but it's a lineout to left to strand Harding.

0-0, M1

Makenna Reid starts at pitcher for Gold and gets three flyouts for a stress-free bottom of the first inning.

Devyn Flaherty lines the first pitch of the second into right but a nice catch in right by Madi Frey on a ball above her head robs her of extra bases.

Ashtyn Danley finishes off a 1-2-3 second with strikeouts of freshmen Isa Torres and Kennedy Harp.

0-0, M2

After she threw two shutout innings in the circle, freshman Ashtyn Danley led off the bottom of the second with a rocket of a double to right-center. She's looking like she may be quite a two-way player for the Seminoles.

She took third on a groundout, but then was tagged out in a rundown trying to score on a grounder to first. Krystina Hartley moved up to second during the rundown and is there now with two outs for Annie Potter.

Potter walked to put two on base with two outs for Madi Frey.

Double steal moves both runners into scoring position but Makenna Reid strands them there with a groundout to third. Nice throw from Kalei Harding to record the out.

0-0 through two innings.

Ashtyn Danley back for a third inning at pitcher. She allows a two-out single by Jahni Kerr but strands her by getting Kalei Harding to ground out weakly.

Make that three shutout innings for the freshman pitcher with a double at the plate as well. Not bad...

Makenna Reid in another jam here in the bottom of the third. She allowed a leadoff bunt single to Kaley Mudge and then walked Katie Dack.

Two on with no outs for the heart of the Garnet order.

Freshman Jaysoni Beachum loops a single into right-center to bring in Mudge and open the scoring.

1-0 Garnet, B3

Makenna does a great job limiting any further damage, getting a groundout, fielding a hard-hit ball back her way and then getting a popout for the final out of the frame, stranding two runners.

1-0 Garnet through 3 innings

Almost went to Area 51 there. Michaela Edenfield launched a towering shot that landed just in front of the wall in the right-field corner. She easily legged out a stand-up triple.

Ashtyn Danley gets the next batter to bounce back to her in the circle. She looked Edenfield back to third before throwing to first for the tout, but Edenfield took off when she threw and narrowly beat the throw home to get Gold on the board.

1-1, T4

Freshman shortstop Isa Torres then launches a ball off the wall in left-center for a double.

FSU's talented freshman class is showing out today.

Ashtyn Danley does well to strand the runner and escape any further damage.

She's allowed one run on four hits over four innings of work against the lineup that is probably the more talented of the two.

Freshman pitcher Mimi Gooden taking over in the circle for Gold here in the bottom of the fourth.

Gooden retired the first two batters she faced before Kaley Mudge crushed a two-out double off the base of the wall in left-center.

RISP for Katie Dack now.

Groundout to third strands Mudge. Nice job getting out of it by the freshman pitcher, Mimi Gooden.

1-1, T5

Allison Royalty taking over in the circle for Garnet here in the fifth inning.

She posted a 2.23 ERA last season in 69 innings.

Diving catch by Autumn Belviy in center takes away extra bases and wraps up a 1-2-3 inning for Allison Royalty.

1-1, M5

Mimi Gooden back for a second inning of work in the circle. Her first pitch of the frame is laced just inside the third-base bag by fellow freshman Jaysoni Beachum, who legs out a leadoff triple.

Gooden gets an infield popout for out #1 but then allows a flyball to center which allows the runner to score from third base. Sac fly by freshman Angelee Bueno makes it 2-1 Garnet in the bottom of the fifth.

Kalei Harding makes an extraordinary leaping catch at third base to retire the side in the bottom of the fifth. As you've come to expect from this program, defense has been played at a high level today.

1-1 as we head to the sixth inning.

Allison Royalty allowed a leadoff walk to Edenfield but then retired the next three batters to not let anyone reach scoring position.

2-1 Garnet, M6

Mimi Gooden back for a third inning of work in the circle. She retired the first batter but then allowed back-to-back singles to Madi Frey and Kaley Mudge.

Gooden gets a popout for out #2 and then got a hard grounder to third which Harding couldn't field cleanly. Bases loaded now with two outs for freshman Ashtyn Danley.

Passed ball by Edenfield brings in Madi Frey from third to make it 3-1 Garnet

Gooden gets a strikeout to limit the damage.

3-1 Garnet as we head to the 7th inning.

Allison Royalty back for a third inning of work. She issued a leadoff walk and then Amaya Ross came through with a laser of a two-run homer that just got over the wall in left-center.

3-3, T7

Man, oh man, can this team play defense. First, a catch behind the plate while falling down on a tricky popup and then a diving catch in left by Kaley Mudge.

Garnet turning to Madi Balk with two outs here in the 7th.

Garnet got two runners on against Balk, but then Michaela Edenfield got caught in a rundown and tagged out for the final out, ending this scrimmage in a 3-3 tie.

The regular season begins next weekend here with the JoAnne Graf Classic.
