Good morning all. I read this board often, but never post. However, I thought it might be a good place to seek some advice on moving to Florida from Chicago.

My wife (no pics) has an interview at a hospital in Kissimmee. Other than vacationing in Orlando/Disney World, I don't really know much about the Orlando/surrounding areas. The facility is called Osceola Regional Medical Center.

So I'm just looking for any insight on the area around that hospital, and any recommendations on areas to look for housing. I don't want to live in a crappy neighborhood, even if it leads me to spend a little bit more $. I currently do accounting for a small private company, I'd imagine it would be easiest for me to find work in Orlando but not too sure about that just yet. So if anyone has recommendations on where to look for housing that wouldn't be too far of a drive for her to commute to the hospital I noted, and for me to commute to Orlando if I end up working there, that would be awesome.

Thanks for the time and help!

Yea, I commute about 36 miles from the burbs to the city for work. I definitely have a feel for Chicago traffic. And from what I hear, it sucks in Orlando as well. I'm assuming from all of the tourism.

There aren't a ton of great options between Orlando and Kissimmee. From an equidistant standpoint, Hunters Creek is probably your best option.

What about WInter Garden? Seems to be about the same distance mile-wise to Orlando and the hospital.

Kissimmee = not good. Just being honest. Formerly a ranching area that was ruined by runaway and poorly planned growth. Think cheesy t-shirt and souvenir shops almost everywhere you turn. Public schools are a disaster, and have been further impacted by tens of thousands of hurricane evacuees moving there. If wifey needs to work there, consider living somewhere else.

Good luck. Consider Windermere or Winter Garden.

I second the Winter Garden/Windermere suggestions. I grew up in WG and am just amazed at how that town has blossomed. It used to be almost embarrassing to say you’re from “Winter Garbage”, but it’s a cool spot these days!

Downtown Winter Garden has really evolved into a neat place thanks to the Trail, but it’s not near Kissimmee. Your wife is looking at a 45-60 minute commute on the Turnpike.

You might as well look at Doctor Phillips or any of the neighborhoods south of downtown- Delaney Park, Conway, etc.

What does your wife do? Just curious because I’m going to be building a small hospital for addicted pregnant women with a campus containing a daycare Center and apartment complexes in Warsaw Indiana about two hours south of Chicago. We’re looking for some NPs, RNs, LPNs, an OBGyn and maybe some masters or PhD psychs.

Not close enough to commute but basically two hours from Chicago, two hours from Indianapolis, an hour from South Bend and about 45 mins from the Ft Wayne airport.

I've got kin livin down there off Red Pine Ave. It's quaint, a little expensive but a real beautiful area.

Jacksonville, FL is the only answer if you’re looking for a city in Florida that offers a world class experience.

Low cost of living, friendly people, easy airport to navigate, traffic is tolerable, best NFL team in the state, 2.5 hour drive to Tallahassee, beautiful beaches that aren’t crowded, great golf, and your wife won’t have trouble finding a job with a hospital here.

I lived in Jax for seven years and it’s a fine city, but world class is a bit of a stretch.

Jacksonville, The pearl of the Atlantic.

Have relatives that live in Celebration. It's nice and on that side of Orlando where the medical center is located.

I take it you're new here. 12Nole is so delusional he once compared Jax to Paris. No. Really. :Face with Tears of Joy

Conway quickly catching up to Kissimmee. Seriously.

It was a terrible comparison and not fair to the city of Jacksonville or the people here. We are actually a friendlier collection of people and take personal hygiene serious.

Jacksonville, FL.....it’s just nicer here.

I missed that.
I've always thought of Jacksonville as a larger Gainesville. Maybe it's changed in recent years.

More and more Noles are wising up and moving to The City of Charm. I'm seeing more and more cars with Seminole tags than I can remember. Its beautiful here and if you like being close to Seminole athletics then Jacksonville is the place to be. Depending on which part of town you're on you can be in Tallahassee under 2.5 hours.

Come join us. Who doesn't like the beach, boating on the river, world class golf, and much more? Something for everyone here.

I'd also like to suggest Apollo Beach. It's Iraqis for "Coal Power Plant."

Still miss Chicago. I just moved from Orlando up to Tallahassee a few months ago after 10 years in Orlando. We had a good time in Orlando but never considered it home. Hopefully you do a better job intergrating in. Best of luck.

CNN just had an article a day or two ago about how the hotels and motels are filled with thousands and thousands of people from PR seeking shelter after Maria. Said they're not going back.

Meanwhile, Osceola County public schools are choking with all of the new kids (who don’t speak English), and arrests and family law conflicts are also spiking. The problems are big and multi-faceted.

Thanks for all of the responses! If the move does come to fruition, I'll post again. Appreciate it
