Driving in SC up 95 towards NOVA and start seeing the Pedro caricatures with the assorted stereotypical slogans and jokes every 10 miles and amazed that it's still here. How in this day and age had this place not been boycotted, faux-raged on social media, and burned to the ground?

I wondered the same thing ten years ago.

It's always a fun car game to count their billboards/see who can spot them the most quickly. Just drove up that way and back a couple of months ago, and now the Glory Foods billboards are giving the SOTB ones a run for their money.

We just drove to SE Virginia and back not too long ago. Passed right by South of the Border and I was amazed how many billboards they had out there. I made the comment to my wife that I had never seen a Glory Foods billboard before and we saw 5 or 6 in South Carolina alone.

Hoppin John, tomatoes, collards, yams. All of a sudden this cracker is gettin hangry for some soul food sides and cornbread.

Over the years, the billboards with messages some considered racist and offensive changed to become tamer but still funny. Schafer continued to deny his attraction was racist. In fact, he was known for hiring African Americans, and even helping them to vote, and standing up to the Ku Klux Klan.[10]

About 300 people, mostly local employees, work at South of the Border. At one time, with 700 working there, it was the largest employer in Dillon County, South Carolina.[10]

Also, it's privately-owned and and a stand-alone business, and as such is insulated from a lot of PC vigilantism.

“Despite the cultural shifts over the decades, South of the Border and Pedro remains popular kitsch with tourists.

“Racist? That’s crazy,” said Mauricio Ventura, a North Carolina resident on his way home from a family beach vacation. A native of El Salvador, neither he nor his wife seemed bothered by Pedro. “I think things go too far. Pedro is funny to me, and I don’t think it’s racist. We laugh about it. What are you going to do? This place – it is what it is.”

"PC is never designed to protect the dignity of individuals or groups who might be insulted or maligned. It's driven by cynicism, scoring political points, or trying to prove that the challengers to incorrect speech are morally superior. More likely, they are driven by a feeling of inferiority and are trying to prove to themselves with a pretense of moral outrage that they themselves deserve respect, not the "victims" of insensitive language. The whole process is a reflection of an authoritarian society."

"We already have laws on the books that require lesser penalties for those who commit crimes against "straight" people because those crimes were not motivated by politically incorrect thinking. The hate police, or the thought police, are entrenched in our legislative and judicial process, and political correctness, though at times it seems silly and frivolous, might well evolve into a federal police effort to maintain order when society becomes unruly in difficult economic times. Maintaining order and safety is the goal at all cost in a totalitarian system. Under those conditions, liberty becomes the enemy."

Just passed a work truck with the iconic black and neon green sotb bumper sticker on it. If they cool with it, then im cool with it. But SC along 95 does seem to be stuck in a time warp to 20yrs ago. I just saw a gottdamn Shoney's sign!

Pretty common for white people to be offended for other people when those people aren't offended themselves.

On the other hand it's also pretty common for white people to pass legislation or policy that harms or stifles opportunity for other people...

When did: "let's all treat people with respect and not make characters of their culture and race" become "I'm just not PC and you are the thought police."

The rule of don't be an jerk also applies to Ron Paul (and if you are quoting Daddy Paul, i'd be cautious, he not so good on the everyone is equal"

"I never sausage a place"
and
"Keep screaming kids, they'll stop"

Were always my two favorites. I absolutely loved that place when I was a kid, we drove from Atlanta to my Grandma's house at least twice a year and I'd save my pennies from cutting grass and raking leaves to buy bottle rockets (one gross of basic bottle rockets 144 of those suckers was $0.99) and Chinese stars from their martial arts supply store.

And I'd also always buy Blenheim real ginger ale, any of you ever drink this stuff? The hot version???? It's amazing.

I went there once while I was in college. Bad idea. Bad idea. Bad idea.
Btdt. UF buddy went in the private room for the "shower dance". I walked by and peeked in the door and saw him laying on his back on a table with a white sheet pulled up to his chin. Let out a drunk laugh and vamosed the hell outta there back to the bar. Still give him crap about that one (and it's one of many).

I don't even want to know what a "shower dance" at that place is. Hopefully it involves a ton of bleach.

Ugh. Bad idea. Bad idea. Bad idea.

"You've never sausage a place. You're always a wiener as Pedro's" always cracked me up as a kid.
Just passed that one. It's the same sign that they had when I was bringing a trapper keeper to school while jamming to my Fat Boys cassette. Hot dog is all faded and falling apart, looks like a toothless bum gummed it. #gofundme needed asap.

That's my thing about folks who whine about 'PC culture'...
Sure you have a right to be a jerk and use words that bother others - and they have a right to be like "hey that guy is a jerk, screw him" - but why do folks feel the need to use language they know bothers other people, esp if they claim their goal wasn't to bother people? Pick some other words and keep it moving.

Quick example. Growing up / thru college / into early 20s we would casually use the b word, that's not terribly abnormal in society. Not to offend people or directly refer to anyone woman's behavior, but just to tease each other, "hey don't be a b----, do the shot," etc...

One day a friend, who I respect, just looked at me and said, "you're better than that," with a particular look of not disgust but disappointment. Those few words, that look, and a split second of time is all it took for me to instantly realize that I was better than that, I felt ashamed and foolish, I didn't ever want to be confused for someone who doesn't respect women. I'm not an idiot, I was well aware of the other baggage that word had but I was a jerk for ignoring it and playing along w/ the boys, I was hiding behind an excuse and disrespecting women, I should have known better.

To the best of my knowledge I haven't used the word since and have tried to encourage others likewise.

Sure it's my right to say it but I have no interest in offending others and my vocabulary is large enough to say what I want to say without using it. I have the best words!

What may be offensive to person #1 from group A may not be offensive to person #2 from group A. How do you suppose we manage it in a free society?

If you know something is offensive to someone, regardless of which group, be a decent person and find another way to say it. Use your vocabulary.

If you can't say it in a way that's not offensive, you're probably legit trying to say something offensive, in which case you're a lousy part of society - and a free society should call you out as such.

Yea, it really is pretty simple like that. Also, if you unintentionally offend somebody, no need to get defensive, just apologize.

My kids were playing very loudly with the neighbors kids, the neighbors were outside too and we were chatting by the fence having a beer. The volume of the kids was absurd. So, I said "Tone it down, you guys sound like a pack of wild Indians"

My neighbors are Indian.

Simple apology, continued our beer.

I forgot I could fit my whole foot in there, but it still fits.

Agree completely that you should avoid being offensive towards individuals or groups. But who gets to decide for a group what is and isn't offensive in a free society? In this case it's billboards or an even closer case for us would be using Osceola and doing the Warchant at games. Do we need an organized thought police to decide for us and we follow?

@NoleFan2U , which post are you replying to?

I know, I just stifled other people's opportunity this morning by waking up.

Why do you speak in platitudes? Being a member of a "free society (whatever that means)" is irrelevant. Do you use the terms wet back, n-word, wap, spic in when you speak?
