Ted Bundy - 40 years ago

Tom, I edited your statement to comply with the request to cease the political statements to save the thread. But here is some insight into his thinking/activity (while confined):

Bundy was a true sociopath/psychopath. As such, he easily found weaknesses in systems, in others and found ways to manipulate them. His observation skills were innate and arose from his having a distorted view of himself, his ‘place’ in the hierarchy (apex predator) and others around him. His world view allowed him to manipulate folks into lapses and discover means to escape that others missed. He had escaped prior to his Florida incarceration on more than one occasion. His abilities allowed him to find weaknesses in others and to manipulate them, even when their brain told them not to (the broken arm- ‘help me to my car ruse’.) Recall, if you can, the judge’s statements about Bundy at his sentencing hearing: ‘worthy adversary, would have liked to see you practice in my court’, etc.

Anyway, using toothpaste and dental floss, Bundy had essentially cut out of his cell on death row. He and his cohort, an inmate by the name of Defriest (currently serving time in Oregon-has never been released), an idiot-savant when it comes to manufacturing and concealing certain items, had planned their escape. They were within days of having everything in place. Luck precluded that. Just plain luck. Bundy had dieted, lost a bunch of weight, exercised and focused, only to be foiled (probably) by poor luck. Defriest and he would have likely been ‘in the wind’ in just a matter of days.

Sometimes things work out for the good guys and those that they protect. As you stated @fsutom, no need to worry about that, or him any longer.

40 years, just like yesterday. So many lessons learned. We now have the term ‘serial killer’ As was stated earlier in the thread, Tallahassee and FSU were changed forever. Those sisters paid a very big price. Their memories should remain forever.
Those who remember them should keep those memories alive.

Thanks to all of those who do their best to keep us safe at night.

Thanks for sharing Mac. That’s frightening to read that they could almost pull that off.

I remember when he was arrested in Pensacola. The media coverage was unreal during his trial.

It was a surreal time. Back then, you didn't have all of the other "media" sources to cause clutter and distraction. Basically all eyes were watching that story...

I was at the Tempo Tavern watching the news when I first heard about the whole thing.
I remember kind of sitting there shaking my head in disbelief thinking WTF for awhile.
At some point we got another pitcher, which seemed like the thing to do at the time.

My wife was living in an apartment behind the Chi Omega house the night of the murders.

My sister got to FSU in the fall of 1978. The tensions were still high then.

When I arrived in the summer of '81 it was still a tense situation. I still remember walking several female friends to their dorms during the evenings just to make sure they got home okay.

I remember the headlines that Sunday morning but I was still in high school here in Tallahassee. I turn and look at the Chi Omega house every time I drive or walk down that part of Jefferson Street.

He did his best to make Sheriff Katsaris look like a fool for grandstanding during the announcement of the indictment.

Way before my time in Tally but I was living in Gainesville when Danny Rolling was there. Talk about a town living on the edge. It was eerie.

Danny Rolling was doing his thing in G'ville the first week of my JR. year at FSU in August of 1990. Media coverage was insane and everyone was on high alert that it could happen at FSU.
Then a year later Marshal Ledbetter broke in the Capitol building and did his thing and people thought he might have been responsible for the G'ville murders but he just wanted 666 Dunkin' Donuts.

I remember the Gainesville murders happened just as I was starting at FSU in Fall of '90. I vaguely recall some girls' parents taking them out of school for fear the killer would strike Tallahassee. Weird time when I look back. It was also the ramping up to the first Gulf War later that year ('90-'91) and actually some slight mention of a draft being instituted, although I don't think it was ever a real possibility.

It wasn't hard to make Katsaris look like a fool, but Bundy certainly could push his buttons.

Is the Chi O house on Jefferson in the same location as it was 40 years ago? I thought I read that they tore it down sometime after Bundy. I lived in Southgate my freshman year which stands next to the current Chi O house, but I thought that was a different location than the one Bundy broke into.

Is Southgate that monstrosity they tore down the Phyrst for? I lived behind it in some old apartments. If so, yes, that is the same Chi O house.

Yes, based on seeing a photo on their website, it is in the same location.

I have a second home there, but rarely drive over to that side of the campus. I checked their website and although it has been painted and added on to, it appears to be the same location & building.

My daughter lived in Southgate as a freshman in a room overlooking the Chi O back patio; when we moved her in I was creeped out from day one, but never told my daughter the history- it wasn't long before she called me to ask if that awful story was true. She kept the blinds closed the entire year.

The Chi O house is still there and has been painted and had some updating since then.

Katsaris was grandstanding.

I thought the layout inside the Chi O house was changed so future residents didn't sleep in the exact rooms.

Man. This event was kinda the end of innocence around Tally.
I used to go to the Silver Dollar just down the street from that house and had in fact been there a night or two before. All kinds of thoughts ran thru my mind as I tried to think of anybody who seemed to be a creeper there.
Wow, and then soon afterwards word came that the little girl in Lake City (?) was missing. Bundy told the detectives that he was able to trick her into coming with him after school by reading her name on the back of her shirt/jersey. Most parents put a stop to that practice after hearing that report.

It seems like this is the same time frame when Butch Trucks (RIP) used to jam at the Silver Dollar. from timeto time.

I posted this in the original Locker Room thread. Great insight from the folks in the TC. Thanks.

Others have responded but yes, it is still there. Next door used to be the Chapel of the Resurrection or something like that and I found that ironically appropriate when considering his victims. It is now called the Episcopal University Center.

Not sure this has been mentioned yet, but there is supposed to be a new movie made about Bundy, with Zac Efron as Bundy and John Malkovich as Judge Cowart.

The Sims' murders (a couple and their daughter) in 1966 was actually the end of innocence in Tally. I was 9 years old at the time, and this was major news in Tally for a long time. This crime has never been solved.

During the Bundy murders, I was living in an apartment on College Ave. It is definitely I day I will never forget.

Wow. You got me to thinking about several other deaths in town while we were kids...you must be a year older than me.
There were a couple of kids trying to gather golf balls out of the drainage ditch that is now covered between Doak and the former golf course (?) during a big time rain event. One of them got sucked into a culvert and drowned.
Another, more troubling death (if possible) involved a young lady who went missing and whose body was later found in a shallow grave out near the Spring Hill Road/ Truck Route intersection. I can’t remember her name, but even as a kid I was kinda spooked. It seems like the perp was finally convicted...
Time dulls a lotta memories, but some things remain close to the surface. Both of these were late ‘60s or early ‘70s.

I recall both of these events, especially the drowning. It is hard to imagine now that there used to be a huge drainage ditch that ran by the Marching Chiefs practice field (it was nicknamed Budweiser creek) and by the stadium. At the stadium, there were walkways over the ditch from the parking area to the stadium. It was dangerous and an eyesore. I believe it was in the 80's when they finally covered it.

In 2001 someone got pulled into Bud Creek in the neighborhood behind Ken's during a flood. If I remember correctly, they found the body down by the airport.

Katsaris' grandstanding and looking like a fool

This is an interesting video of a Denver news station report from the days after Bundy was captured. It has footage of the campus and an interview with a woman who lived across the hall from him.

There were kids also washed away after falling into that culvert that ran down the middle of Franklin Blvd. I think it's been modified or fenced by now, though.

That is actually the same drainage ditch/creek as the one that runs past Doak. There is a lot of ground that sends water into that system, and when one of the periodic “toad stranglers” happens, it is a dangerous body of water.

Just found this.....in 1984, three Florida prison guards were arrested for selling hacksaw blades to Ted Bundy. Another inmate had a key to Bundy's cell door.

I was at a social event with one of his defense attorneys after the trial. Naturally Bundy was the subject of the conversation. The attorney said that Bundy's ego was what got him convicted. If he did not insist on defending himself there was not enough admissible evidence to have won a conviction. One of his best friends worked for the SA and he said they all breathed a big sigh of relief when Bundy decided to defend himself. They knew their case was weak and circumstantial at best. They had no doubt of his guilt, just worried about the strength of their case.

I had dated a girl who was good friends with Margaret and we had double dated with her and her BF. That was a year or so before the murders, but it was still like a kick in the gut when I was told she was one of the victims. I could only imagine how it must have been for those who lived through it as FSU students and area residents. My brother was a TCC student at the time and living in Tally. My 1st cousin was an FSU policeman at the time. It had a very profound effect on both of them, especially my cousin.

When I lived in the old ATO house (on Tennessee St) we referred to it as “the moat.” We walked it a few times. It used to go underground at Tennessee & pop out near the band field.
