The Latest New Footie Thread

No one's catching City this year, so the EPL turns to the race for the other 3 CL spots, and Gunners everywhere relish the fact we've moved another 3 points closer to St. Totteringham's Day.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the PGSF Footy Fans! May your team (or mine) spoil City's bid to go undefeated and may all your goals be rockets like Mesut Ozil's was vs Newcastle!

Echo the sentiments. Hope we all get to enjoy some decent "holiday season" footy starting with Arsenal/Liverpool on Friday and ending with Arsenal/Chelsea on Jan. 3rd.

Same from me. This thread is awesome and I look forward to reading opinions from all involved every time I log into Warchant.

Go Gunners!

Shaping up to be quite the League Cup semifinals.

Also one of my favorite threads!

I was just telling les, that with the line up tat they used, they should have ran up and down like the Showtime Lakers. Arrrgghhhh.

Forgot they were on today, arrrgghhhh. What a 6 minute span for the Gunners.

Today the Arsenal take on Crystal Palace, and Wenger will tie Old Whisky Nose for all time managing games in the Prem at 810. Would that he had as much silverware as SAF picked up during that time.

I get that Arsenal will need to replace Sanchez, and potentially Ozil, at the end of the season (though I wish they would just sell Sanchez in January at this point). So, I understand why the club is continually linked with offensive players (midfielders & forwards).

However, the club sold Gabriel this past summer, thought about selling Mustafi and want to sell Debuchy. How about going after some top notch defensive players in the next couple transfer windows? Also, how about going after a midfielder to replace Cazorla since he will never play meaningful football for Arsenal again.

Until those 2 holes are filled at the club I don't see Arsenal challenging for a Premier League title, and more than likely not even for Top 4.

Wow! Citeh only captured a single point this morning. Chelsea's now clearly a little speck in their rear view.

City should’ve lost.

Gave up a PK in stoppage and Ederson saved it. (Terrible PK though)

Andros Townsend also missed a sitter in the 80th minute that should’ve sent Palace up 1-0.

But City didn’t lose...bastages!

They DID lose Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne to injury though. That might ultimately be their undoing as far as their unbeaten streak goes.

Yeah but a PK in the 91st when the match is 0-0...they REALLY should’ve this time.
Well, it's like I was telling the scUM fans on the Smack Board back during the fall...If you keep getting lucky, statistically it'll even out over time.

I can't believe Arsenal fans are not up in arms this year and screaming this from the rooftops in London. Maybe it is because they know Kroenke won't fire Wenger, I have no idea.

I know the handball against Chambers was harsh, and Mike Dean sucks as a referee. However, Arsenal should have never been in the position in the first place. They are so stale when teams sit back, it is as if they have no idea how to break down a team. This is one of the worst West Brom. teams in years and Arsenal should have been running circles around them. Instead they are clinging to a 1 goal lead (which only came about in the 83rd minute), and now bitching about a handball penalty that should have never been given.

Arsenal have been out of the Title picture for over a month, and by the end of January might be on the brink of missing Champions League again for next season.

You guys have had my Blues' number in recent matchups..We'll see how things go in Emirates Wednesday.

It's Dec. 31st,

With 1st place all but officially decided, let's put up our 2nd - 6th predicitions -> can re-visit at the end of the month (i.e. end of transfer period).

I'll go:

2nd - Chelsea
3rd - Spurs
4th - Arsenal
5th - Liverpool
6th - United

2 days ago, I'd have had United 4th pushing Arsenal and Liverpool down a spot -> but with Lukaku's injury and Zlatan being out for Jan. could be tough sleding for United. They also play a couple a 6 pointer with Spurs this month.

I could be way off on Spurs, but they have a very tough end of Jan./early Feb as they have in order:
vs United
at Liverpool
vs Arsenal
then they play Juventus in the 1st leg of the UCL.

If Spurs get 7 points from those 3 matches, I think they'll be in the top 4 at that point and really like their chances to finish there.

As an aside, what would be funny is if the following happened:

Top 4 of:
1st - City
2nd - 4th - 3 of Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and United
5th or 6th - the 4th of those above listed teams
5th or 6th - Arsenal

Funny part would be the team that finished 5th or 6th out of the UCL teams goes on to win it and as a result gets to play UCL again next year and if Arsenal got into UCL by winning the Europa (like how United did this year), thereby give the PL 6 teams in the UCL for 2018/2019.

I suspect if that happened, UEFA, might be quick to change the rule (again) like they did after Liverpool won the UCL in 2005 but finished 5th in the Prem.

I don't believe there will be a St. Totteringham's Day this season either. I also do not believe the BIG 6 listed will be the Top 6 of the league. Based on current table, my thinking is Burnley somehow slips into the top 6. Doubtful they make top 4, but they will somehow finish above one of the big clubs IMO.

1. City
2. Chelsea
3. Sp*rs
4. Liverpool
5. United
6. Burnley
7. Arsenal

Why the drop for Arsenal? Well, they can't seem to break down clubs that want to sit back & defend. Sanchez & Ozil seem to have at least one foot out the door each (both for Sanchez). Injuries will start to build up, and despite being a big club, they don't have much depth in key positions. The defense is average at best. So, unless they figure out a way to start scoring like City and they plan to outscore everyone, I don't see them moving up the table.

Also, Arsenal will most likely get past the next round (maybe 2) of Europa League, then unceremoniously get knocked out of the competition.

I hope I am wrong on a lot of this, but it is how I feel at the moment.

We may not finish in the Top 4 but if Burnley finishes ahead of us, I’ll eat 20 jalapeños and video it.

I'd be extremely surprised if Burnley finished top 6, I fully expect the "Big 6" to finish top 6.

I think Burnley finishes no better than 8th and maybe 9th -> I fully expect Everton to finish above them and maybe even Leicester as well.

Burnley is about 6 points from safety, I could very easily see them pull a WBA from last year -> i.e. once they hit that 40 point level they just crap the bed and get like 2 or 3 more wins the rest of the campaign and finish with about 52 points (at 34 currently). They don't score enough goals to me to move up the table (only 18 in 21 games) and I don't see them continuing to do such a great job of not giving up goals the rest of the way (only 17 conceeded through 21 games). Also, I think Dyche's name will come up a lot the rest of the way which will prove to be a distraction. I think he will leave in the summer. If West Ham stay up, that would be a good landing spot for him IMO, maybe Stoke also. Someone in that echelon of the table.

So, does the #WengerOut cry get any louder this year or since he signed a new 2-year contract is he given a 1-year reprieve? Personally I don't care that he has the new contract, he should be facing pressure this year no matter what.

Part of me wants the Rams to win the Super Bowl this year so Kroenke can see what it is like to win a title. Then maybe he will want the same for Arsenal and actually take steps to getting there.

OK, I am a bit confused by the fixture schedule. I know Wenger was complaining about it after the draw with West Brom., but that isn't even what I am confused about.

Match Day 21 only had 9 games instead of 10. Sp*rs and West Ham didn't play. They both play tomorrow (not against one another) and their last games each were on 12/26, meaning they have had a week off. I do see they play each other on Thursday 1/4, but how exactly is that fair to the teams they are playing tomorrow?

Sp*rs play Swansea who last played on 12/30, so they have an extra 3 days of rest. West Ham plays West Brom who last played yesterday (12/31), so they have an extra 4 days of rest.

Why are these 2 teams scheduled for 1/4 instead of this past weekend like everyone else? Seems very strange, and I can see why Wenger is complaining about schedule inconsistencies as they seem to be spread across the entire league...probably for TV purposes.

dawg, the Spurs and Hammers were scheduled for Dec. 30th, but pushed back for 24 hours to the 31st, for TV purposes. That would have put a limit on the amount of fans who could attend because of NYE and the transit system being overly used, so the match was pushed back to the 4th so that more fans could attend the match.

What? Less ups, more downs? The horror!

Very exciting 1st half with both Chelsea and Arsenal having their opportunities. The ball definitely had eyes for it not to go over the line on the Sanchez double-poster!
