The Return of Paganism

Furthermore, I would venture to guess that no one on here understands how Methodism began. Not that it matters one iota, but it just shows recent evolution of religion by comparison to ancient.

Also, is anyone familiar with the things that are not taught in Sunday School, as in the scripture of John? It’s considered esoteric studies which are what the Essences did.

Modern day religion is considered to have been 400 AD. That is 400 years after Jesus.

Methodism began 1,700 years after Christ by John Wesley.

The word "Catholic" was first uttered in 110 A.D. after the Church began.

Jesus was crucified in 33 A.D.

Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.
Can you highlight the part where he said gay marriage was an abomination?

Only speaking from personal experience here, but the Catholic idea of denying oneself certain pleasures during Lent is merely a small way we demonstrate gratitude for all Christ went through during his final days on earth in order to bring us salvation. Once again, I could be wrong, but I don't believe failure to adhere to such practices constitutes a mortal offense.
I was taught the same the same. But it came with the threat of severe punishment.

When are you going to come home?

Confession and the Eucharist await. :)

Why do you stay in the Catholic Church if you don't believe in the teachings?

Just curious.
Because I have learned my faith is between myself and God. There are also very valuable teachings. But I have learned to take the human failings of the church as part of the process and have done well in separating the two.

Then you're just making up your own faith.

That's why protestants exists with 30,000 denominations.

Brian, I am not an idiot, so don’t treat me as one.

I am well aware as having been raised a Methodist by 3 generations of Emory graduates what a Methodist is. I chose to go to the mother church, Episcopal, in which case I had to study all of their history as well.

I’d venture a guess that you know very little about either.

It has been my experience in my really long life that Roman Catholics know very little about Judaism and Protestantism. RC’s were discouraged by their priests to study outside of Roman Catholicism.

You're guessing wrong. :)

I've been studying theology since 2016. I've been to shul a dozen times or so. Most of my friends are Jews.

I know the history of protestantism, Martin Luther and the splinter groups, but it's hard to keep track of 30,000 denominations that keep splintering from each other.

I'm not Thomas Aquinas but I've studied a bit. I also have a minor in philosophy. Mostly atheist: Nietzsche, Sartre, Camus and Schopenhauer.

BTW, "Roman" Catholic is just one rite within the Catholic church. There are 23 others.

But, you knew that, I'm sure. :)

Times have changed for those under age 60.

I would gladly go toe to toe with you on theology and philosophy of all types.

OMG. You have stepped over the line.

Do you even understand how Protestantism began? There’s a reason we are called Protestants we protested certain practices of the Roman church.

Are you aware of the 30 years war? The French Wars of Religion, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes?

My family fled France and eventually ended up in Virginia. Since you’re in DC, trot over to Richmond and visit Manikintowne.

Yes.

A bipolar monk named Martin Luther left the Church 1,500 years after Christ over his false teaching of Sola Fide. It means that we are saved by faith alone.

It goes against the Bible.

Now there are 30,000 protestant denominations all with different teachings. (Where does the Bible say to start your own church, by the way?)

Martin Luther was also a proto-Nazi who inspired Adolf Hitler with his writings.

Here's one:

I was just curious about your username

Is it something that you can share it’s meaning ?

I understand if it’s to be kept quiet

LOL at “splinter groups “. That in and of itself tells me that you don’t know.

Since you profess to have studied philosophy and religion, which I have as well, tell me have you also studied history and foreign language as well?

Tells me that I don't know what?

I just gave you the basic history of protestantism. The Episcopal Church began when Henry VIII wanted to get a divorce and the Pope wouldn't let him.

Episcopalianism is known as "Catholic Lite" because they don't follow the Catholic moral code.

I have a Bachelors degree in history. I studied French as well.

I'd gladly go toe to toe with you on these subjects. :)

As will I. I have almost a double major in French, was a French, Spanish and History teacher. And, also studied philosophy. Existentialism was my specialty.

Oh to add to that, it was not the Episcopal church, it was the Anglican Church.

I'm not sure what you're debating here. Do you have a point?

I studied existentalism for about 15 years now.

Nietszche, Camus, Sartre, Pascal, Kierkegaard and some others.

Do you have a favorite?

Kierkegaard seems up your alley. :)

We all know faith without works I’d dead

If we have faith that Jesus is the son of God, died on the cross to pay for my sin, is our Lord and Savior the works should follow
We are commanded to “ go and make disciples of all nations, be giving,be in some form of service etc

am I missing something?

I am a believer, I’ve shared my faith many times( not enough), been in ministry many years

Please specify what constitutes “ works” to me in accordance with Catholicism

Thanks

That sounds good to me.

Good works include:

  1. To feed the hungry.
  2. To give water to the thirsty.
  3. To clothe the naked.
  4. To shelter the homeless.
  5. To visit the sick.
  6. To visit the imprisoned, or ransom the captive.
  7. To bury the dead.

Spiritual works of mercy

Just as the corporal works of mercy are directed towards relieving corporeal suffering, the aim of the spiritual works of mercy is to relieve spiritual suffering.

The works include:

  1. To instruct the ignorant.
  2. To counsel the doubtful.
  3. To admonish the sinners.
  4. To bear patiently those who wrong us.
  5. To forgive offenses.
  6. To comfort the afflicted.
  7. To pray for the living and the dead.

Interesting blanket statement Re Protestants and doctrine.

I think it's true. There is overlap between denominations but there's a reason there are thousands of them. It would be impossible for most people to sort them out.

The Baptist churches just splintered last year again. :)

You said you don't attend any church. Do you consider yourself a Christian?

Do you ever think about when you're going to die?

No, I do not have a favorite, because existentialism is not my favorite. I prefer to study political philosophies and how they relate to the current world.

I feel that if people understood exactly what they are, we would be in a better place today.

I like John Locke. :)

I'm much more interested in truth questions found in existentailism than worldy politics.

We're all waiting to die at this point.

I said I no longer attend any specific church.
