The Return of Paganism

I'm a Jew who does plenty of virtuous stuff and hasn't committed any heinous crimes that I'm aware of, but not gonna be taking Jesus as my Savior.
Should I start stockpiling ice packs and fire retardant underwear?

Cmon, you know very well that some will accept him and some wont

Jew and gentile

But to mock our beliefs is wrong

Not mocking anybody's beliefs... even had a very Christian neighbor in FL when I had a beach place down there tell me how sad she was that I'm gonna burn in hell since I don't believe in Jesus as the Savior.

But yeh, that's a pretty funny scolding coming from you, the dude who talks to female servers about their "cooters" and then boasts about it online.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I wasn’t responding directly to you in my first sentence.
In fact I’m putting you on ignore.
Seek secular help. Just a thought.

Just once, a legitimate post would be welcome.

As a Catholic I know NO others in my faith who believe that you are automatically an atheist if you don’t attend church regularly.

But it’s a free country and people can believe what they want.

My kids grew up in Texas and there were Protestant kids at their school who said since our family was Catholic we weren’t Christians. Meh. My daughter also went to 17 Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. One of her soccer teammates wore long pants and a head scarf for games. Family was Muslim.
They ALL believed in a higher power.

I grew up in Florida and had public school kids in my neighborhood ask me if the nuns beat us every day at Catholic school.
Again, meh.

The freedom to believe or not believe in the same things is such a cornerstone of our country and we can’t forget it or let it slip away.
Jim Baker, Benny Hinn, Jim Jones and Jimmy Swaggart all approve this message of faith and unity for humanity as a whole. Besides, I didn't get nun until my second semester on campus.
The Cornerstone Tabernacle invites one and all!

I never said I was perfect, ever

And your correct I need to tighten my walk up

I have never told someone what your neighbor told you

And actually looking back on my reply I should have just said “probably, or good idea”!

Gold moms “ sunscreen”, was pretty good

This sinner will try to do better

Here's a website you may be interested in from Roy Schoeman, a Jewish Harvard professor that converted to Catholicism.

He gives an interesting perspective.

Did that by chance occur at Hooters?? If not, it's a missed opportunity for a Dr. Seuss-style rhyme. 🙁

His Church does.

The Catholic Church goes alllllll the way back to Peter and the Apostles.

Jesus said we need the Eucharist.
You are avoiding the point. You put more faith in the doctrine of your denomination than in the actual teachings of Christ which means your faith is misplaced and thus making you an atheist.

The doctrine of the Church is based on Jesus's teachings. The Church compiled the Bible. The Holy Spirit guides the doctrines to keep them safe from error.

The Catholic Church isn't a "denomination." It's the universal church that goes back to Christ.

Your interpretation is based on your opinion of what the Bible says, which is why there are 30,000 protestant denominations.

No offense. :)

Perhaps I'm wrong, but Brian doesn't come across as an adherent to Brother Michael Diamond (a hardcore pre-Vatican II guy).

Paul said to "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling."

So, we hope to be saved.
I have never seen anyone misinterpret scripture as often as you.

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 2:8

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

Romans 10:9

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

I learned to read at a very young age because apparently I told my grandfather it was time that I learned to read. He only had children’s bible stories, so that is what I learned with. (I come from a long line of Methodist ministers).

Everyone keeps talking about the church. Well that word did not exist at the time. So when Jesus told Peter to build a church on this rock, he probably used the word temple.

Etymology of the word church.

That's just your opinion taking Scripture verses out of context. We could go back and forth all day.

Here is Scripture that show good works are needed for salvation:

Matthew 22:36-40

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.: All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven … Depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.”

2 Corinthians 5:10

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad."

Do not withhold good (Proverbs 3:27-28)

"Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,
when it is in your power to act.
Do not say to your neighbor,
“Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you”-
when you already have it with you."

Whatever you did for the least of these (Matthew 25:40)

The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Ephesians 2:10

"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Hebrews 13:16)

"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased."

“For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether it is good or whether it is evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:14.

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5:10.

“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith, but does not have works? Can faith save him? But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” James 2:14-26.

Can you link me to the part where Jesus told us that meat on Friday’s was frowned upon? Come to think of it, I must have missed in my 53 years of being a Catholic where Jesus taught us gay marriage wasn’t acceptable. Imo, people need to stop mis-quoting Jesus.

Sure.

Here's Jesus teaching what marriage is: a lifelong union between one man and one woman.

Matthew 19:

He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?

So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?”

He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”

Only speaking from personal experience here, but the Catholic idea of denying oneself certain pleasures during Lent is merely a small way we demonstrate gratitude for all Christ went through during his final days on earth in order to bring us salvation. Once again, I could be wrong, but I don't believe failure to adhere to such practices constitutes a mortal offense.

(Edited in order to provide more concise language. It's a rather important topic.)

Furthermore, I would venture to guess that no one on here understands how Methodism began. Not that it matters one iota, but it just shows recent evolution of religion by comparison to ancient.

Also, is anyone familiar with the things that are not taught in Sunday School, as in the scripture of John? It’s considered esoteric studies which are what the Essences did.

Modern day religion is considered to have been 400 AD. That is 400 years after Jesus.

That proves nothing.

It's the beginning of the Catholic Church.

Catholic just means "Universal."

After Christ ascended, Peter went to Rome and began the Church. Peter was crucified upside down by Nero.

The word "Catholic" was used in the 1st century.

This is all historical.

"The first known use of "Catholic" was by the church father Saint Ignatius of Antioch in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans (circa 110 AD)."
