Would you take a bullet to the kneecap for $10 million USD?

From the front or the back? I read a lot time ago about some thugs or enforcers in some scenario that would shoot the kneecap through the back because that made it (at that time at least?) irreparable.

In any event, I'm a bit surprised to say this, but I don't think I would.

Front.

No, I'm not. One artery feeds blood to your lower leg through the knee. That artery would be destroyed.

Add to the fact that joints are extremely difficult to repair in surgery.

And I got the 90% from my roommate, who is a surgeon.
Hate to break it to you but your resident friend better recheck his amputation stats. I know this because I am a Prosthetist with 25 years of experience. I know what I speak of. You should just Google amputation stats from knee capping for.

Here's the deal:

We go outside your favorite hospital and you lie on the pavement. I shoot you in the kneecap with a .22 caliber pistol then wheel you into the Emergency Room. You then get $10 million USD cash money, tax free.

Would you take that deal?
Since it is a .22, I would definitely take it. A larger caliber would require some serious thought.

Spoke with an attending vascular surgeon today about the topic. He said while maybe not 90%, it will be likely an amputation case (if artery is hit).

You have to hope vascular can repair the one major artery that supplies blood to the lower leg, and then hope that ortho can repair the joint.

I'll side with the docs that actually perform the operation on this injury.

Did you mention my name? :)

Yah if it was a .22 I could live with that along with the 10 million. The limp would be decause my wallet was so heavy.

Ericram, you may be familiar with the company from which my husband recently retired...Ohio Willow Wood. They manufacture lower limb prosthetics and liners, etc

Oh yes. They have been around for years. As you know their name is what they make the exoskeletal prostheses from. Bet your husband has some stories. What did he do there at OWW?

You are correct that Willow Wood has been around forever...still held by the descendants of its founder. Founded in the early 1900s...founder worked for the railroad and lost a leg in an RR accident. Was unhappy with his woooden leg prosthesis, so made his own from willow trees near his home in Mount Sterling, OH...hence, the OWWCO. They now use titanium, carbon fiber, etc in their products. When my husband began with the company, he worked with the staff prosthetist(s) and would provide training to other prosthetists in the proper use and applications of their products (Alpha Liners, LImbLogic, Pathfinder foot, etc). He would also travel to state, regional and national meetings representing the company in their exhibits at those meetings. He retired as the manager of their Customer Care group.

I am positive I must have run into your husband along the way. Small world indeed. Thanks for sharing. Hope he is enjoying his retirement.

Ericram, just shared your post with him...he laughed, saying since he spent most of his days trying to soothe unhappy customers, he may very well have spoken to you over the phone and it was most likely a conversation where you were none too happy...LOL! He was wondering where you practice?
