This has more to do with judges and state attorneys, more than prisons. The state prison system sends inmates to a receiving facility when they enter, and then ship them off where there are openings. County jails are different story. Many are overcrowded and at capacity in largely populated counties. That's why many larger counties have alternatives to arrests for many crimes such as written arrests, civil citations, and diversion programs.

Dateline revisiting Mike Williams murder case Friday night (2/22/2019)
NBC’s Dateline will revisit the Mike Williams murder case Friday night with interviews including one with his mother Cheryl Williams.
She was instrumental in pressing investigators to look into her son’s disappearance in December 2000 while on a duck hunting trip to Lake Seminole. After 17 years it was proven he was murdered — shot and killed by his best friend Brian Winchester in a plot orchestrated by him and Williams’ wife Denise Williams, with whom he was having an affair.
She was convicted for her role in his murder in December and sentenced to life in prison earlier this month. Her arrest came after Winchester, who was granted immunity, confessed to the killing and implicated her in devising the murder for insurance money plot.
Friday’s episode will include footage from the week-long trial at the Leon County Courthouse. It airs at 10 p.m. on NBC.

I watched the Dateline. I must be missing something. Denise Williams was convicted based solely on the word of a confessed liar and killer? Her lawyer got him to confess on the stand that he was a liar as well as a killer. Also, he had plenty of motive to falsely accuse Denise Williams. He had a deal with the prosecutors where he wouldn't be tried for murder if he testified against Denise Williams. Why would the jury convict her based on his testimony? Dateline must have left out some other evidence that would make the jury find her guilty. If I were on the jury I would never have found her guilty based on that slime's testimony. Can anybody shed some light on this? I guess the jury felt that the $1.7 million in insurance policies made her guilty, but the fact is (as her lawyer pointed out) that the case rested solely on Brian Winchester's testimony.

In documents filed with the court Tuesday morning, prosecutor Jon Fuchs said their main goal of ensuring Denise Williams did not profit from her husband’s death has been fulfilled.
Court documents show that Denise Williams’ assets have been transferred to the couple’s now grown daughter, Anslee. Court records show she signed an agreement saying she would not use the money to pay for her mother’s legal bills or appeals.
