Basketball Updates: FSU 91, UNF 75

FSU (4-5) looks to break a four-game slide tonight at 8 p.m. against North Florida (7-5). The game will be on ACC Network.

The Seminoles are in the middle of a seven-game homestand through early January. This stretch includes four straight non-conference games, including the loss to SMU over the weekend. Games against Winthrop (on Friday) and Lipscomb (on Dec. 30) will follow.

We'll be looking to see improvement from Primo Spears, who made his FSU debut on Saturday night and scored 10 points but opened 0 for 10 from the floor. Is he able to shake that rust, run the offense better and help the Seminoles find some efficiency.

Cam Corhen is not expected back until after the holiday break based on timelines provided by coach Leonard Hamilton. FSU is instead going to have to lean heavily on Jaylen Gainey as well as Taylor Bol Bowen and Waka Mbatch.

The Seminoles are struggling in a number of areas. One positive has been steals, a category where they lead the ACC at 9.4 per game.

FSU has fared well in the series, taking seven straight.

FSU women's hoops plays host to Alabama State (Wednesday)

FSU sports information:

Florida State fans can tip off the Leon County Schools Winter Break on the right note by celebrating Holiday Hoops on Wednesday between No. 21 Florida State (8-3) and Alabama State (0-9) at 6 p.m. at the Tucker Center.

Fans can get photos with Santa Cimarron in the concourse by the Northwest Box Office Entrance (sections 122/123), and a toy drive will be held to bring unopened toys to donate at the Northwest Entrance and East Entrance of the Tucker Center.

Florida State and Alabama State will play for the seventh time in series history, with FSU winning each of the last four and holding a 4-2 overall record against the Lady Hornets. The two teams last played on March 21, 2015, in an NCAA first round win for the Seminoles (91-49) that gave FSU a record-setting 30th victory that year.

The 2014-15 team finished 32-5 and remains the most accomplished team in program history, with current assistant coach Morgan Toles (then a graduate assistant) and head coach Brooke Wyckoff (then an assistant coach) on staff back then.

The Seminoles’ home game against Alabama State is their final non-conference game of the regular season. It will complete a tough pre-ACC slate that included three AP Top 25 opponents and six Power-5 opponents in a 12-game schedule.

FSU opens ACC play just after the holidays at home against Georgia Tech on Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. in a game where the first 100 fans receive a free Let’s Go Noles T-shirt.

FSU ranks second in the ACC averaging 7.9 made three-point field goals per game. The Seminoles own a 30-3 record at home in non-conference games since the start of the 2018-19 season.

FSU is coming off a 76-56 road win at Drexel on Sunday, getting a team-leading 22 points from sophomore guard Ta’Niya Latson. The Noles were +30 in points in the paint differential (46-16), their largest margin of the season.

The Seminoles lead the ACC in lowest turnovers per game at 11.5, a mark that is also ninth nationally. The average is made more impressive by the fact that FSU generates 77 possessions per game.

Football Watch: Jarrian Jones, Ja'Khi Douglas, Darrell Jackson

Post-practice videos with three FSU football players

Thought Jarrian Jones was extremely candid (when is he not?): "I ain’t going to lie, I’m going to be hurt with that for the rest of my life. ... It just feels like somebody ripped your heart out of the chest, for real."

"We can’t do nothing about that. We did our part. Every game that’s put on our schedule we won. I don’t know what more we could have done."

Football Florida attorney general Ashley Moody launches inquiry into CFP's decision

Florida attorney general Ashley Moody admits she is a graduate of the University of Florida. But she's also raising an inquiry into Florida State's omission from the four-team College Football Playoff.

"I know injustice when I see it," Moody said in a statement. "No rational person or college football fan can look at this situation and not question the result. The NCAA, conferences, and the College Football Playoff Committee are subject to antitrust laws."
