Tennis Cornut-Chauvinc, Dous-Karpenschif Finish as NCAA runners-up

FSU sports information:

Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif finished as runners-up in the NCAA Doubles Championship after a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the national championship. This marks Florida State’s furthest run in any NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship event.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif were in a tight battle to start the first set, with both duos holding serve at 5-5 before FSU closed out the frame at 7-5 with five straight points. The Seminoles won all five of their first sets during the NCAA Doubles Tournament.

Robert Cash and JJ Tracy responded with a 6-0 victory in the second set to create the 10-point tiebreaker to decide the national championship. While Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif crept back in the tiebreaker after falling behind, Ohio State served out the match to claim the 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (5) victory.

The Seminole pairing improved on their Round of 32 appearance from last season and went on an unprecedented run in the tournament, advancing to the final match for the first time in program history.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif finished with 30 career victories as a pairing, marking the 12th most between any doubles partners in team history. They earned 10 nationally-ranked wins and represented Florida State on Court 1 the entire season.

Florida State finished the season ranked No. 10 in the final team rankings after claiming the program’s first ACC Championship and advancing to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament.

Baseball Notes, updates: FSU vs. Wake in ACC Tournament semis (Sat at 1 p.m.)

The No. 5 seed FSU (41-14) will face Wake Forest on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the ACC Tournament semifinals in Charlotte, N.C. The game will be televised by the ACC Network.

FSU defeated Georgia Tech on Tuesday and Virginia on Friday in pool play to advance. A top-8 national seed could be on the line this afternoon. Curt has thoughts from Link Jarrett as well as D1baseball and Baseball America analysts in our FSU-Wake preview.

Wake is coming off a long night (and early morning), outlasting North Carolina 9-5 on Friday in 12 innings. On the plus side, FSU won't see star pitcher Chase Burns (he had 15 strikeouts on Friday). Burns went six innings but the Wake bullpen failed to back him up.

This will be the first semifinal, with Miami playing Duke later in the day.

LHP Andrew Armstrong will start, likely in an opener role that he has done a few times this year. Armstrong could go three innings, potentially a trip through the lineup.

Here's FSU's lineup and we'll have updates below in the thread

FSU files cert petition in NC Supreme Court

FSU has filed a Petition for Writ of Certiorari in the NC Supreme Court. My initial thoughts.

I was surprised to hear a cert petition was filed. It's a discretionary appeal, not by right. Most are denied. The standard is usually that the court will only use this when the ruling below is so against the law that it's a miscarriage of justice AND that the issues cannot be fixed on appeal. What is interesting is that the jurisdiction and sovereign immunity issues are already being appealed directly so they will have two appeals going at the same time basically.

Track and Field FSU men earn bid to NCAA Outdoors

FSU sports information:

The Florida State men’s outdoor track and field team concluded the 2024 NCAA East Regional Preliminary Championships with three additional student-athletes earning bids to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Tyson Williams, Kyvon Tatham, and David Mullarkey punched their ticket to nationals, which will take place in Eugene, Oregon from June 5-8 at Hayward Field, while Jeremiah Davis added another event to his list.
Williams qualified for his first nationals in the 110-meter hurdles, placing seventh with a lifetime best and fifth-fastest time in FSU history at 13.53.
“Tyson was one of the big highlights of the day claiming his spot with a lifetime best,” said FSU track and field head coach Bob Braman.
Davis, who qualified in the long jump on Wednesday, placed seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 16.15m (53-0). Davis will compete in his third outdoor nationals after collecting nine All-American honors in both indoor and outdoor since 2021.
Tatham followed in 12th with a mark of 15.67m (51-8½), advancing to Eugune for the first time in his career.
“Jeremiah was all business today getting his necessary qualifying mark on the first jump, “Braman added. “Kyvon came in clutch in his third jump in the triple jump for a lifetime best.”
Mullarkey concluded competition for the Seminoles in the 5,000, placing fifth with a time of 13:52.62. Mullarkey qualified for his second outdoor nationals after earning All-American honors in 2023 in cross country, as well as second-team accolades in indoor in 2024.
“David handled his race in controlled business as well,” said Braman.
Ismael Kone opened in the 100 (10.22), placing 19th and closed out his evening in the 200, placing 19th at 20.74.
Andre Korbmacher competed alongside Williams, placing 16th with a time of 13.75.
Laquan Ellis placed 32nd in the triple jump with a mark of 15.24m (49-11¼). Jayden Louis-Charles followed in 43rd at 14.90m (48-10¾).
“We had another really strong day to finish the men’s competition,” Braman said. “My heart feels for the 4x100 relay team after their disqualification for stepping on the line. The men’s squad dealt with diversity all year and fought their way back better than I could’ve asked. I’m super excited to see the ladies show out tomorrow.”
The 19th-ranekd women’s team will begin the quarterfinals on Saturday, starting with the 4x100 relay at 5:00 p.m.

Softball Lonni Alameda on Makenna Reid's injury

FSU coach Lonni Alameda was asked about Makenna Reid's return to the circle on Friday night. Reid pitched two innings and threw 35 pitches. It was her first appearance in a month:

"Kenny was on a pitch count," Alameda said. "Kind of a pain tolerance count. She’s dealing with some stress fractures in her back. So now it’s time to get her healthy and rested for next season. And very grateful she gave us what she had. My hope was two innings and around the 50-pitch mark. I think she gave us what she had, which was awesome."

Baseball FSU offense erupts in win over Virginia to advance to ACC Semifinals

FSU baseball racked up 12 runs on 16 hits to overpower Virginia's potent offense and advance to the ACC Semifinals tomorrow at 1 p.m. vs. either Wake Forest or North Carolina. First time since 2018 FSU has advanced to the ACC Semis.

Baseball Live Updates: FSU vs. Virginia in ACC Tournament (Friday, 11 a.m. on ACC Network)

After two days off, the Florida State baseball team returns to action in the ACC Tournament Friday morning in Charlotte.

The No. 5 seed Seminoles (40-14) and No. 4 seed Virginia (41-14) face off at Truist Field (11 a.m. on ACC Network) to determine which team wins Pool D and advances to the ACC Semifinal to face either North Carolina or Wake Forest.
UVA was one of three ACC teams didn't face during the regular season. FSU will now be tasked with trying to shut down a Cavaliers offense which leads the ACC in batting average (.342) and is second in the conference in home runs (112).

My Virginia preview story, highlighting its prolific offense

Because of this challenge, it works out very well that FSU has sophomore ace Jamie Arnold (9-3, 2.40 ERA) lined up to make his weekly start against Virginia with a spot in the semifinals on the line. Arnold got a nine-pitch save Tuesday vs. Georgia Tech on his scheduled bullpen day and now will make his final start before FSU hosts an NCAA Regional next weekend for the first time since 2018.

Virginia, on the other hand, used its ace, Evan Blanco Wednesday vs. GT. He's the only pitcher on their staff who has made more than seven starts this season. Instead, the Cavaliers will Elon transfer/senior righty Joe Savino (2-1, 2.00 ERA). He's thrown just 18 innings this season and didn't appear in his first game for the Cavaliers until early April. He's since eased into a larger workload, pitching five innings each of the last two weeks vs. NC State and Virginia Tech, allowing three runs on seven hits over those 10 innings.

Softball Notes / updates: FSU at Oklahoma (Friday, 8 p.m.)

FSU will play at Oklahoma in game 2 of the Super Regionals on Friday at 8 p.m. (ESPN2). The Seminoles will need to win Friday night's game to advance to a decisive game 3 on Saturday (that time is TBD).

It's likely FSU will use freshman RHP Mimi Gooden in some role tonight. Gooden didn't pitch in game 1 but had one of her better starts against UCF in the regionals and generated groundouts.

We have a story from game 1 on Thursday, with a few thoughts from coach Lonni Alameda.

Tennis Cornut-Chauvinc, Dous-Karpenschif punch ticket to national championship

FSU sports information:

Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif punched their ticket to the NCAA Doubles National Championship match after defeating Texas’ Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 on Friday afternoon. This continues Florida State’s deepest run in the NCAA Individual Championships and marks the first national championship appearance in program history.

“I thought we returned really well today and we were in almost every return game, breaking our opponent several times which in college matches is rare,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “We set the tone right away and both players did a great job of putting themselves in great positions.”

The FSU duo began the first set with a signature break point in game one before marching out to a 4-1 lead early. They managed the remainder of the set to win 6-4, maintaining a perfect 4-0 mark in first sets during the NCAA Doubles Tournament.

They carried that momentum in the following frame with a fiery 4-0 start to the second set, winning five straight games and two service break games. The Texas pair crept back into the set with three straight games of their own at 4-3.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif dug deep once again and flipped the switch on momentum with two straight aces to claim a 5-3 lead before earning the fifth and final break point to send themselves to the championship.

The Seminole pairing earned their fourth consecutive and 10th nationally-ranked win of the season.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif advance to the championship match and will face No. 3 Robert Cash and JJ Tracy of Ohio State on Saturday afternoon.

Baseball FSU will have hands full with potent UVA offense in ACC Semifinal play-in

FSU will face probably the only better ACC offense than its own tomorrow against Virginia for a spot in the ACC semifinals and maybe a top-eight seed.

It'll be a tough test for likely FSU starter Jamie Arnold, but UVA's pitching situation is less certain than the Seminoles after the Cavaliers used their ace Wednesday vs. Georgia Tech.

Golf Woad, Ting earn All-American honors by golf coaches

FSU sports information:

Florida State’s Lottie Woad (First Team) and Mirabel Ting (Honorable Mention), who led the Seminoles to a sixth consecutive Top-12 national finish in 2024, have earned All-American honors as selected by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. It marks the second consecutive season both players have earned All-American honors from the WGCA: Woad was a First-Team selection while Ting was a Second-Team selection in 2023.

It marks the third consecutive season for Head Coach Amy Bond and the Florida State golf program that multiple players have earned All-American honors as chose by the WGCA. Including Woad and Ting in 2024, Beatrice Wallin (First-Team) and Charlotte Heath (HM) earned the highest honor in women’s golf in 2022, while Woad (First-Team) and Heath (First-Team) were both selected among the best in the sport in 2023.

As one of the nation’s top golfers this season, Woad won the 2024 Augusta National Amateur Champion, finished in second place in the individual standings at the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships, was named the 2024 ACC Golfer of the Year, and earned All-ACC honors as a sophomore. She finished as the runner-up for the ANNIKA Award which is presented annually to the National Player of the Year. In finishing as the runner-up in the national championship finals, she carded a 7-under par score of 65 in the first round of the championship. Woad’s score of 65 tied her personal record and the school record for lowest score in a single round. Her score is also the lowest in a single round in the NCAA Championship Finals in program history. Woad finished the 2024 season with a single-year program record 70.04 stroke average.

Woad is a finalist for the Division I PING WGCA Player of the Year award. She will play in the U.S. Women’s Open June May 30-June 2 at the Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club.

Ting, who carded a 72.50 stroke average in her first season as a Seminole, earned All-ACC Honors as she played in each of Florida State’s seven events during the spring season. She was named as the co-ACC Golfer of the Month for March of 2024 and won her second career individual championship at the 2024 Valspar Augusta Invitational. Ting ranked second among her teammates in stroke average (72.50), tied for first in rounds scored at par or better (12), second in rounds at 75 or better (14).

Ting was a Second-Team All-American by the WGCA as a freshman at Augusta University in 2023 before transferring to play for Bond and Florida State.

“We are so proud of Lottie and Mirabel for earning All-American honors,” said Bond. “Lottie enjoyed a sensational year and was very consistent through the fall and spring seasons. From winning the ANNIKA to open the season, to finishing in second place at the national championships, it was a pleasure to see her grow with every birdie she made. Mirabel played great golf throughout the spring and finished in the top eight in six of her eight starts. She was under par during the regular season and was instrumental in helping finish in the top 12 at nationals for the sixth consecutive season. She’s going to continue to get better and better as a golfer and we are very excited for her moving forward.”

The Seminoles earned five top-five team victories, the team championship at the Guadalajara Collegiate Invitational, finished second in the Florida State Match Up, finished fifth at the NCAA Last Vegas Regional Championship, and were ranked within the nation’s top 20 through the fall and spring seasons.

Tennis NCAA Championships: Cornut-Chauvinc, Dous-Karpenschif advance to semifinals

FSU sports information:

Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif made history as the first Seminole pairing to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship after defeating Arizona State’s Jacob Bullard and Murphy Cassone in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6) on Thursday afternoon. This marks the furthest any FSU competitor has ever advanced in the NCAA Individual Championships.

“It was an incredibly tough battle and very windy, but the rain delay helped us to clear our minds and execute with more aggression which has been successful for us,” Cornut-Chauvinc said.

The FSU pair played a very cool and collected first set, holding their serve throughout the frame and finding a crucial break point to win the set 6-4.

The Seminole duo dropped their first set of the competition in the following frame 6-2 to set up the deciding 10-point tiebreaker.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif were down 2-1 before a brief rain shower halted play for a short period of time. After the delay, the pair unleashed some powerful play and regained the lead at 3-2 before extending their advantage to three at 7-4.

The Florida State duo outlasted their opponent and took a 10-6 victory in the tiebreaker. Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif earned their ninth ranked victory of the season and became the first Seminoles to advance to the semifinals of any NCAA Championship.

“We didn’t play our best match but we connected well and found our momentum at the right time,” Dous-Karpenschif said.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif advance to the semifinals and will face No. 26 Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper of Texas on Friday afternoon.

A Few Observations

1. I think DFS is managing his moderator hat and his poster hat very well, I have not found him anymore or any less opinionated than most of the posters here.

2. I think that there are occasions that some posters here start "bait threads / post". When you start a thread that you know using a modicum of common sense is going to attract insults, drastically opposing points of views, those are bait threads / posts. If you are going to start threads or reply in a thread with a post that you know is going to cause attacks, do not expect DFS or myself to bail you out.

3. Please, do not introduce politics into any thread. If you do it, your post will be deleted, if you continue to do it, you will be warned and enough accumulated warnings lead to vacations. Our intentions are to allow as much leniency as possible, but politics are off limits, period.

4. Again, other than vulgarity (including pics), politics or insults everything else is fair game and left to DFS' discretion.

Go Noles and Enjoy

When the Voice of the Seminoles Jeff Culhane warmed up a gathering of some 500 Seminoles in Jacksonville last week, he asked how many were going to Ireland and more than 100 raised their hands. He asked the same question one night later in Panama City and received a similar response. It's on. Softball Jaysoni Beachum a finalist for DI freshman of the year

FSU sports information:

For the first time in school history, Florida State softball has a Top 3 Finalist for the TUCCI/NFCA Division I Freshman of the Year award as Jaysoni Beachum was named a finalist on Thursday afternoon. Oklahoma's Ella Parker and Florida's Keagan Rothrock were the other two finalists.

The ACC Freshman of the Year has put up unreal numbers in her freshman campaign and has put together one of the best freshman seasons in school history. The Tallahassee native leads the team with a .425 batting average, 15 home runs, 65 RBI, a .746 slugging percentage and a .516 on base percentage. Her 65 RBI are the most ever by a Florida State freshman and are the fourth-most RBI ever by a Florida State player in a single season. Beachum is one of just four players in Florida State history to hit 15 home runs and drive in 60 or more runs. She is on pace to break the freshmen school records for batting average, hit, slugging percentage, and on base percentage. Beachum also leads all freshmen in batting average, RBI and on base percentage.

Beachum has been terrific in the field this year as well as she has started 59 games at third base and has made just five errors in 161 chances. Beachum is one of just two players on Florida State's roster to play in every game this season.

Beachum was named a First Team All-ACC performer and also became just the third Florida State freshman to be named First Team All-Region and the first since 2004. Beachum was Softball America's Freshman of the Month in February, March and April as well.

The three finalists will travel to Oklahoma City on Tuesday, where the winner will be announced.

Football TNT reaches deal to sublicense some CFP games from ESPN

Via the CFP:

ESPN and TNT Sports have reached a five-year agreement for TNT Sports to sublicense select College Football Playoff (CFP) games from ESPN, beginning with the upcoming college football season.

TNT Sports will present two first-round College Football Playoff games during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. In addition to the first-round games, TNT Sports will add two quarterfinal games each year beginning with the 2026 season through the 2028 season. TNT will be the primary network televising the sublicensed CFP games, among additional TNT Sports distribution platforms.

ESPN will present all other College Football Playoff games on its networks including the annual CFP National Championship Game. ESPN will also continue to manage the sponsorship program for the presentation of the CFP.

“We’re delighted to reach this agreement with ESPN, providing TNT Sports the opportunity to showcase these College Football Playoff games on our platforms for years to come,” said Luis Silberwasser, Chairman and CEO, TNT Sports. “TNT Sports aims to delight fans and drive maximum reach and engagement for these marquee games.”

"ESPN is pleased to sublicense to TNT Sports a select number of early round games of the College Football Playoff, an event we’ve helped to grow – alongside the CFP – into one of the preeminent championships,” said Rosalyn Durant, ESPN executive vice president, programming & acquisitions. “We’re confident in the reach and promotion that this new agreement will provide as we enter the new, expanded playoff era.”

Basketball Recruiting FSU women add juco forward Morelia Chavez

FSU sports information:

Florida State Women's Basketball Head Coach Brooke Wyckoff has announced another transfer to the program beginning in the 2024-25 season, welcoming rising junior forward Morelia Chavez from Eastern Arizona College.

Chavez, a 6-foot-1 player from Morelia Michoacan, Mexico, will have two years of eligibility remaining at FSU.

"We look forward to welcoming Morelia Chavez to the Seminole Family as we continue to add size, experience and shooting ability to our roster," Wyckoff said. "Morelia Chavez pushes us forward in all of those categories. She is a driven, hard worker and we are excited that she is joining us at pursuing excellence at the highest level this season."

In her most recent season with Eastern Arizona, Chavez put up impressive numbers with 11.8 points per game, 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 41.2 percent from 3-point range. She also shot 84.6 percent from the free-throw line, ranking 13th at the junior college level.

She finished the 2023-24 season on the All-ACCAC DI 1st Team, and totaled 20 games this past year in double-figure scoring. Chavez dropped 31 points on Central Arizona College on Feb. 10, going 12-of-22 from the floor and 4-of-7 from long range.

Chavez was recognized as the ACCAC Player of the Week after leading Eastern Arizona to three consecutive wins over Howard College, Salt Lake Community College and South Plains College.

Last year, she recorded a pair of 23-point performances in wins over Yavapai College and South Mountain Community College. Chavez totaled four 20-point games in the 2023-24 season, and had three games with 10+ rebounds.

Chavez has been lauded for being able to impact a game in multiple ways, being a prolific long-range shooter, a strong defender, a physical player as well as being someone who moves nonstop on both ends of the court.

Her addition to the Seminoles for the 2024-25 season gives FSU 11 student-athletes, as she joins offseason additions Malea Williams (Graduate forward, Cincinnati) and Raiane Dias Dos Santos (Redshirt freshman guard, Gulf Coast State College).
