Football Column: I don't think a QB change is going to fix this Florida State team

At some point in the next few weeks, FSU will probably make a QB change.

But I'm no longer thinking that has a chance to change much. No QB change will be able to fix this year's broken, mistake-prone FSU football team.

Football Dysfunction in Dallas: FSU falls flat in road loss to SMU

Florida State’s offensive dysfunction was heavy carry-on baggage for the team’s first road trip.

DJ Uiagalelei tossed two touchdown passes, one each to Kentron Poitier and Landen Thomas, but he also threw three interceptions in SMU’s 42-16 win over the Seminoles. The third interception was returned 82 yards for a touchdown, and the second one went off tight end Kyle Morlock’s hands and eventually set up another touchdown.

Uiagalelei was also stopped on fourth-and-goal at the SMU 2, as the Seminoles got no push on run plays on third or fourth downs in the second quarter.

FSU volleyball sweeps Miami on the road

FSU sports information:

The No. 18 Florida State volleyball team (10-2, 2-0) made quite the statement on Sunday afternoon as it swept (25-23, 25-16, 27-25) No. 25 Miami (9-4, 0-2) at the Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla. FSU has now won six-consecutive matches against Miami which ties its longest win streak in the series. This was also just the second time FSU has swept a ranked opponent in a true road game. FSU swept No. 21 Texas A&M in College Station in 2014.

The Noles and Hurricanes played a tight first set, but FSU was able to gain a little separation with a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Hurricanes quickly responded to tie the set at 17. The teams traded points for the next 12 rallies, but with the set tied a 23, FSU got back-to-back kills from Audrey Koenig and Taylor Head to take the first set.

Set two got off to a hot start for the Noles, and they never looked back in a 25-16 win in set two. FSU scored the first five points in the set and jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Miami responded well and cut the lead to three at 11-8, but that was as close as they would come as the Noles continued to increase their lead to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Hurricanes controlled a lot of set three and held a 22-18 lead, but the Noles would not be denied as they went on a 5-1 run to tie the set a 23. The Noles fought off two set points and finally got to match point themselves at 26-25. Koenig put the pressure on with a great serve to force a free ball for the Noles, and Head put down the game's final kill to give the Noles their second win over Miami in five days.

Koenig was once again terrific for the Noles with 14 kills for her eighth-consecutive match with 10 or more kills. Khori Louis also recorded 10 kills on 19 attempts while adding a game-high five blocks. Kyleene Filimaua led the way defensively with 12 digs.

The Seminoles will hit the road again next weekend as they'll face Virginia on Friday and Virginia Tech on Sunday. Both matches can be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

Football Updates: SMU 42, FSU 16

It took over a month into the 2024 season, but the Florida State football team finally plays its first true road game of the season Saturday night.

The Seminoles (1-3, 1-2 in ACC) welcome ACC newcomer SMU (3-1) to the conference with an 8 p.m. game on ACC Network at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. It'll be the second straight week that FSU took on a new ACC team playing its first conference game. The Seminoles got their first win of the season last week with a 14-9 home win over Cal.

This will be the first ever matchup between FSU and SMU. However, there's some familiarity between the FSU staff and SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee. Lashlee was a conference opponent as the offensive coordinator at SMU during Mike Norvell's final two seasons at Memphis in 2018 and 2019. He was then OC at Miami in Norvell's first two seasons at FSU, beating FSU in 2020 before the Seminoles won in 2021.

The Mustangs are currently 6.5-point home favorites over the Seminoles.

There are a few FSU injuries to keep an eye on during pregame warmups. The Seminoles may get offensive tackles Jeremiah Byers and/or Robert Scott back against SMU. Byers has missed the last three games while Scott missed last week's win over Cal. We should get an availability report from FSU a few hours before kickoff and I'll be at the stadium tonight to keep an eye on things during pregame warmups.

Follow along here for pregame updates and then live updates once the game gets underway just after 8 p.m. EST.

Jimbo vs Stan

I need a new perspective here. I’m not saying Jimbo was right about everything and I sure as heck am not going to say Stan didn’t sabotage anything.

@CurtWeiler
@Fishbits
@Bob Ferrante
@Jerry Kutz
@OsceolaPat

Can someone give a summary on how we have fallen since 2016? I feel like it goes deep from the friction between Stan and Jimbo, the idea (from my understanding) Stan handcuffed Tag hiring a staff, all the way to hiring an accountant as AD, to finally getting Alford here at a time it realistically looks like we are in a 10 year hole.

At a loss. . .

Every week something seems to compound on a bad team spiraling downward. The OL is bad, but last night it seemed SMU players were in the backfield at the snap. Drops continue to he an issue. Penalties from 5th year players. QB play actually looked recent for a bit, then it went to crap. Last night we saw the secondary fall apart. Our all world secondary to go with our all world defensive line played awful. I’ll give SMU credit, they made some contested catches and some great throws, but it was as just a consistent theme all night. At this point there doesn’t seem to be a part of this team that is capable. The only hope now is to not let it totally fall apart for coming years. Try to salvage something to build on, something to sell recruits. It looks bleak right now.

BREAKING-Star viewer opts out of rest of season

(Wire Services-Tallahassee)
Today, star fan, David Slaton, announced that he is opting out of the remainder of the Florida State Seminoles football season to take his viewing talents to the NFL. " I've got to think about my future. My eyes have been really damaged this season watching the Seminoles and I can't allow that to interfere with my pro career," Slaton indicated when reached for comment.
