Football Column: FSU's defense finally realized its potential, clutched up vs. Cal

FSU's defense was far from perfect last night, allowing over 300 passing yards and far too many long conversions.

But the defense sure was clutch in the red zone and the defensive line sure looked dominant. Those were the deciding factors in FSU's elusive first win.

7 Points in 1st Half……

At best, with 2 minutes left in the half, we could reach 14 points in first half at the most!! That alone (given the previous three games) tells me we need to put Brock Glenn in for at least 1 or 2 series in 3rd quarter. If we stop Cal on their opening drive to start 3rd qtr, bring Brock out. If Cal scores, give DJ the first offensive series in 3rd qtr. and if we don’t score, put Brock in regardless of what Cal does the next time they are on offense. I don’t think we replace DJ completely (not yet anyway), but our offense is what it is at this point. So let’s see how the offense responds with Brock in at qb. If he gets in the game, give him two back to back series just to evaluate not only how Brock plays, but how the entire offense responds and plays with him in the game.

Football Updates: FSU holds off Cal 14-9

Another week, another chance for Florida State to finally secure its first win of the 2024 season.

The Seminoles (0-3, 0-2 in ACC) remain at home this week for their third straight game at Doak Campbell Stadium. After losses to Boston College and Memphis, FSU now hosts ACC newcomer Cal (3-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. (ESPN2) for its first conference game as a new member after moving from the Pac-12 to the ACC this offseason.

Despite calls from the fanbase for trying something new, FSU will maintain the status quo at quarterback this week. ESPN's Pete Thamel announced Saturday morning on College GameDay that Oregon State transfer DJ Uiagalelei will start his fourth straight game for the Seminoles.

This will be the first ever matchup between FSU and Cal. Even though FSU is winless and Cal is undefeated, the Seminoles are 2.5-point favorites over the Golden Bears.

Cal is already 1-0 in cross-country trips this season, beating Auburn 21-14 two weeks ago. While they haven't played the toughest slate of games, the Golden Bears have allowed just 37 points in its first three games of the season, not yet allowing more than 14 points in a game this season. That could prove to be a challenge for an FSU offense which hasn't yet found its footing this season.

FSU got some good injury updates Saturday morning with the news that starting left tackle Darius Washington is expected to be back Saturday after suffering an injury during pregame warmups last week that kept him out of the Memphis game. Wide receiver Jalen Brown and safety Shyheim Brown are also expected to play while starting right tackle Jeremiah Byers is out for the third straight game and linebacker Cam Riley will be a game-time decision.

We'll be live from Doak starting around 5 p.m. when the press box opens with pregame updates and confirmations of who will be available for the Seminoles vs. Cal. We'll also have live game updates below once the game gets underway.

What happened to FSU

Can we please see just a glimpse of FSU. I would like to see the aggressive physical play. If we are going to lose then do it full speed. We are the softest team in college, probably the softest team in FSU history. The good or bad news is we are at week 4, but it is time to ball out. Someone needs to tell these kids what they are putting on tape is KILLING THEIR DREAM of trying to make it in the NFL. Better study hard boys because you actually might have to get a real job. They have a chance most would die to have, please don't waste this opportunity, at some point you need to look deep inside and decide what you want to become. I hope it is a winner otherwise you need to move on. I want to believe but we as fans need more. GO NOLES

FSU volleyball defeats Alabama in straight sets

FSU sports information:

The No. 18 Florida State volleyball team (8-2) wrapped up non-conference play with a sweep (25-23, 25-23, 25-13) over Alabama (8-3) Saturday afternoon at Foster Auditorium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Seminoles 8-2 record through 10 matches is their best start through 10 matches since 2021 when they also started 8-2.

The Seminoles' offense continued to stay hot in the first set as they hit .367 in the first set. After a close start to the set, the Seminoles were able to pull away and take a 17-12 lead. The Tide did not go down without fight and cut the lead to 20-18, but FSU responded to get to set point at 24-20. Alabama scored three-consecutive points to cut it to one, but Audrey Koenig ended the set with a kill to give the Noles a 1-0 lead.

The Noles jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in set two, but Alabama chipped away and tied the set at 15. The teams traded the next few points until Koenig recorded a kill and back-to-back aces to take a 20-16 lead. The Tide tied the set at 21, and after trading points, FSU prevailed to take the set 25-23 with Koenig once again recording a kill to end it.

The third set was all Seminoles from start to finish as they ran away with the final set by a score of 25-13.

The Seminoles hit a season-high .462 while they held Alabama to a .210 hitting percentage. Koenig led the way with her seventh-consecutive match with 10 or more kills as she had a game-high 13 kills. Louis continued her strong play with 11 kills while hitting .600. Maddie Snider came on strong and had a season-high 10 kills on 17 attempts. Defensively, Taylor Head led the way with a season-high 16 digs.

FSU will begin ACC play with a rivalry matchup against Miami on Wednesday night. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Tully Gym on ACC Network.

Football ESPN says FSU to start DJ Uiagalelei at quarterback vs. Cal

It would appear there will not be a change at QB this week for FSU.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported this morning on College Gameday that FSU will stick with DJ Uiagalelei tonight vs. Cal.

Football DJU and OSU beat Cal in 2023 50-40 with 5 TD throws

Wilcox on whether having played against DJU last year when he was Oregon State's QB gives Cal an advantage in preparation:

DJ is a really talented guy. I remember him in high school, even in early years of high school. He's a big, physical guy. He can throw the ball all over the place. He's played a lot of football, and we played him last year. He played an excellent game against us last year and so we've got a ton of respect for him. He can throw it. He's really hard to tackle because he's so big. So we've got a lot of respect for DJ. ... Anytime you've seen somebody once, you kind of have a little bit more of a feel for him, but it's a different system.

Below is the link to the stats and play by play of Oregon State's 50-40 victory over Cal last year in which DJU was 19 for 25 and threw 5 TD passes with no turnovers.

Football FSU OL struggling to find cohesiveness, live up to lofty 2024 expectations

As an offensive line standout on a couple great 80s FSU teams, few have enjoyed FSU’s OL resurgence of the last few years more than Mark Salva.

That has made FSU’s serious struggles and lack of cohesiveness up front this season tough for Salva to watch with no clear answers or fixes in sight.

Football Recruiting WR commit Malik Clark visiting South Carolina today

FSU WR commit Malik Clark will be visiting South Carolina for their game against Akron today. Clark visited Florida State last week for their game against Memphis. It should come as no surprise but South Carolina and NC State have both come back around hard on Clark since Florida State has started the season 0-3. This will be one to monitor moving forward.
