Golf Mirabel Ting begins play in Arnold Palmer Cup on Friday

FSU sports information:

Florida State’s Mirabel Ting begins play as a member of the International Team in the Arnold Palmer Cup on Friday at the Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland as she makes her second career appearance in the Ryder Cup-style competition which was first played in 1997. The three-day tournament, which was co-founded by the great Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), features the top men’s and women’s college golfers matching the United States against a team of International players.

The United States defeated Ting, and the International squad by a 32-28 margin in the 2023 Arnold Palmer Cup at the Laurel Valley Club in Ligonier, Pa.

Ting (Miri, Malaysia) earned 2.0 points in four matches during the 2023 Arnold Palmer Cup. She helped earn points in the Friday Foursome match as well as in her Saturday Singles match.

“I’m honored to represent team international, my country, and Florida State in the 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup,” said Ting from Malaysia prior to traveling to Ireland. “I really feel fortunate, and at the same time excited to have opportunity to play in the Arnold Palmer Cup for the second time in my career. I learned a lot about how to play different shots while watching the best collegiate players play in the event last year. This year, I’m looking forward to enjoying the week, continuing to become a better golfer, and learning more about my game.”

Ting, who finished in a tie for eighth place in the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur, earned All-American Honorable Mention Honors by the WGCA and Golfweek and was named to the All-ACC team during her first season as a Seminole in 2024. She was named as the ACC co-Golfer of the Month in March of 2024 and won her second career individual championship at the 2024 Valspar Augusta Invitational.

During the spring of 2024, Ting ranked second among her Seminole teammates in stroke average (72.50), tied for first in rounds scored at par or better (12), and second in rounds scored at 75 or better (14). She tied her career-best for a single round scored with a 67 in the third round of the 2024 Valspar to win her first individual championship as a Seminole.

Academically, Ting earned Florida State Academic Dean’s List Honors, and was named to the All-ACC Academic Women’s Golf Team and the WGCA All-American Scholar Team in 2024.

Football Recruiting 2025 DE Jalen Wiggins shuts down recruiting process

2025 #FSU DE target Jalen Wiggins announced that he is shutting down his recruiting process.

Based on similar announcements you would expect this to include unofficial visits to FSU. With the Seminoles expected to take two HS DE's in this class it will be interesting to see if he cuts off communication with the FSU staff because I would imagine he would stay on their radar.

I could also see FSU circling back to Nicolas Clayton.

Athletic's Bruce Feldman has FSU/Miami in 12 team playoff. What do you think?

Here's a few paragraphs of the Feldman piece in the Athletic

Picking a preseason top 25? That’s easy. Projecting the 12-team College Football Playoff field? That’s trickier. The most vexing part? There’s the elephant in the room. And the bulldog, the longhorn, the tiger … and Lane Kiffin. If I were picking my preseason top 25, I’d have five SEC teams in my top 12, but I doubt that there will be that many teams from one league in the first expanded CFP.

Remember the expanded Playoff formula: The five highest-ranked conference champions receive automatic bids and seven at-large spots are given to the next highest-ranked teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded 1-4 in the expanded Playoff. Those teams have a first-round bye. Seeds 5-8 host a first-round game and quarterfinals and semifinals are at bowl sites.

With that in mind, here’s my first crack at the CFP 12 for the 2024 season.

Here's what Feldman had to say about FSU:
3. Florida State: Ready to reload with a chip on its shoulder

Even with a ton of guys gone to the NFL, Mike Norvell has a squad ready to reload and make the expanded postseason — especially after last season’s drama. Only eight starters return, but the buzz inside the program is high about how ready some of the new starters are to break out. Patrick Payton leads a very talented defensive front and has Marvin Jones Jr., the Georgia transfer, across from him; I’m told he’s ready to have a monster season. Miami transfer Darrell Jackson is a massive presence. Watch out for CB Azareye’h Thomas, who could make a run at All-American honors.

The big question: How potent will DJ Uiagalelei be? He’s back in the ACC after making some strides at Oregon State. His ability to run should fit well in Norvell’s system. Transfers Malik Benson and Roydell Williams (both from Alabama) and Jaylin Lucas (Indiana) will add a spark. The Noles get Clemson at home and have trips to Miami and Notre Dame, and also will play a good Memphis team after a bye. A 10-2 run sounds about right, unless DJ U takes another big step.

Here's what Feldman had to say about FSU's opponents who he expects to make a run too:

8. Notre Dame: An OC-QB combo with great upside

Marcus Freeman has upgraded the Fighting Irish’s athleticism, which should really show on defense. Howard Cross III and Rylie Mills are disruptive forces up front and Ben Morrison and Xavier Watts both are All-American caliber on the back end. The offense figures to look quite different with OC Mike Denbrock returning to South Bend after a terrific two-year run at LSU. Duke transfer Riley Leonard brings much more of a running threat at QB. The season opener could be rough: The Irish visit Texas A&M to face the man who knows Leonard best, new Aggies head coach Mike Elko, his former head coach with the Blue Devils. Later, the Irish receive visitors Louisville and FSU, which will both be very dangerous, and then go to USC, which the Irish whupped last season.

11. Miami: Time to buy in

Miami has had just one top-10 finish in 20 years (2017). So why am I buying this version of the Canes? Miami has made a huge commitment to NIL, and its big free-agent additions prove that, starting with former Washington State QB Cam Ward. Everything I’ve heard out of Miami has been exceptional regarding Ward. He has an excellent arm, the knack for extending and making plays and brings leadership, something that the Canes have lacked there for a while.

Adding bruising RB Damien Martinez from Oregon State was another big get, and ex-Houston WR Sam Brown will add more punch to a potent group of receivers. The D-line also was significantly upgraded to help out budding superstar Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor. Miami starts on the road at Florida, which is in a rebuild, but The Swamp is never easy. Miami gets FSU at home. A 10-win season given all the infusion of talent here feels very realistic.

12. Memphis: Loads of talented returners

An excellent subplot this fall will be keeping an eye on the Group of 5 spot. My pick is the Tigers, who beat Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl en route to a 10-win season. The Tigers have been able to keep their big stars, which is really hard to do these days, especially if you aren’t a Power 4 program. Quarterback Seth Henigan has thrown 79 TDs the past three years and he’s a decent runner. His go-to guy Roc Taylor, a 6-3, 225-pound Freak, is at his best in big games. He had eight catches for 102 yards in the bowl win and seven catches for 143 yards in a close loss against last season’s breakout Missouri team.

Mario Anderson, South Carolina’s leading rusher last year, will boost a talented backfield, where speedy Sutton Smith looks like one of those old game-breaking Tigers RBs from the Mike Norvell days. The Tigers visit FSU in September, but after that, they should be more talented than everyone else they face, although games at USF and Tulane should be good challenges.

I expected Memphis to be good this year but this will be a bigger test than many of our fans may be prepared for.

FSU softball lands versatile Auburn transfer

Football Recruiting Recruiting Board - (2025) Updated 8/7/2024

You are starting to see FSU recruiting board slim down because FSU has moved on or the prospects have. We will see some added after the Summer Camps. You will see some prospects commit to FSU. The numbers will work themselves out.

PLAYERS IN BOLD ARE COMMITTED TO FSU

Quarterbacks
Tramell Jones: (Mandarin HS-Jacksonville, FL) 6-0, 180 (Committed to FSU) (June 21st)

Off the Board

Antwann Hill: (Houston County HS-Warner Robins, GA) 6'5-220 (Committed to Memphis)
Carter Smith: (Bishop Verot HS-Ft Myers, FL) 6'3-180 (Committed to Michigan)

Comments: Jones has locked down his recruitment. He will most likely sign with FSU on NSD. After flirting with UF, Jones told the FSU coaches he is shutting his recruitment down. FSU was putting out feelers for Smith and Luc Nickel who is committed to Miami.

Running Backs
Byron Louis: (American Heritage-Plantation, FL) 5-11, 200
Ousmane Kromah: (Lee County HS-Leesburg, GA) 5-11, 200 (Visited FSU June 7)

Iverson Howard: (Quince Orchard-Gaithersburg, MD)
Taevion Swint: (Osceola-Kissimmee,FL)5'9-180 (Committed to UCF)

Off the Board
Alvin Henderson: (Elba HS-Elba, AL) 5-10, 180 (Committed to Auburn)
Deandre Desinor: (Delray Atlantic, Delray, FL) 5-11, 190
Shawn Simeon: (Naples HS-Naples, FL) 5'10-180 (Committed to Toledo)
Todd Robinson: (Valdosta-Valldosta, GA) 5'11-190 (Committed to Georgia)

Comments: FSU recruiting board will be cleared up in the next month. Ousmane looks to be pulling the trigger in July. If he decides to choose FSU does that mean Louis goes to Georgia. If Ousmane pulls the trigger for UGA that all but moves Louis into FSU Camp. FSU will know its running back faith real soon.

Wide Receivers
CJ Wiley-(Milton-Alpharetta, GA) 6'4-190 (Committed to FSU)
Daylan McCutcheon-(Lovejoy HS-Lucas,FL) 6'0-175 (Committed to FSU)

Kelvin Crawford: (Gadsden County HS-Havana, FL) 6'2-180
Donovan Olugbode-(IMG Academy-Bradenton, FL) 6'2-170
Naeshaun Montgomery-(Miami Central, Miami, FL) 6'1-165

Off the Board
Jaime Ffrench: (Mandarin HS-Jacksonville, FL) 6-1, 185
Kaliq Lockett-(Sachse, TX) 6'2-175 (Committed to Texas)
Koby Howard-(Chaminade Prep-Hollywood, FL) 5'11-180 (Visits in June)
Cortez Mills (Homestead-Homestead, FL) 6'1-170 (Committed to Oklahoma)
Caleb Cunningham: (Choctaw County, Ackerman, MS) 6'3-180 (Committed to Alabama)
Derick Smith: (Southside HS-Selma, AL) 6'1-180
Joshua Moore (West Broward HS-Pembroke Pines, FL) 6'4-200 (Committed to Florida)
Varnell Brown-(Orlando Jones, FL) 5'11-170 (Committed to UF)
Dallas Wilson (Tampa Bay Tech, Tampa, FL) 6'3-200 (Committed to Oregon)

Comments: FSU has pulled in Wiley and McCutcheon. Both are four star receivers. Wiley may be one of the best receivers in the nation. FSU will only go after ELITE receivers at this point. Look for them to continue to recruit Moore, Brown and Wilson even though all of them have already committed elsewhere.

Tight Ends
Chase Loftin: (Millard South HS-Omaha-NE) 6'6-215 (Committed to FSU)
Andrew Olesh: (Southern Lehigh-Center Valley-PA) 6'5-215

Off the Board
Brock Schott: (Leo HS-Indiana) 6'3-215 (Committed to Miami)
Elyiss Williams: (Camden County-Kingsland, GA) 6-7, 235 (Committed to UGA)
Cameron Roberts: (Saint Thomas Aquinas-Fort Lauderdale, FL) 6'4-220
Ryan Ghea: (Milton HS-Alpharetta,GA) 6'5-230) (Committed to Auburn)
Tamez Young: (Robinson HS-Tampa, FL) 6'4-200
Hollis Davidson (McIntosh HS) 6'5-230 (Committed to Auburn)

Comments: The board has shrunk to two players. Davidson who we expect to commit to FSU. Only AU has a shot. Loftin says all the right things about FSU. Even if he commits to FSU can they hold onto Loftins pledge for six months?

Offensive Line
Solomon Thomas: (Raines HS-Jacksonville, FL) 6-4, 315 (Committed to FSU)
Peyton Joseph (Houston County-Warner, GA) 6'3-310 (Committed to FSU)

Josh Petty: (Fellowship Christian School: Roswell, GA) 6'6-270

Mario Nash: (Kemper County HS-Kemper, MS) 6'5-280 (Offered)
Cortez Smith: (Parkview HS-Lilburn, GA) 6'3-310
Dontrell Glover (Langston Hughes HS-Fairburn, GA) 6'2-315
Carde Smith (Williamson HS-Mobile, AL) 6'5-280 (Back on the board)

Off the Board
David Sanders Jr: (Providence Day School-Charlotte, NC) 6’6-270
Juan Gaston (Westlake HS-Atlanta, GA) 6'7-345
Ziyare Addison (Sumner HS-Riverview, FL)-6'5 270 (Committed to Oregon)
Rowan Byrne (Iona Prep-New Rochelle, GA) 6'6-300 (Committed to Clemson)
Max Buchanan (Seminole HS-Sanford, FL) 6’4-275 (Committed to Miami)
Ty Haywood: (Ryan HS-Denton, TX) 6'5-290
Lamont Rogers (Horn HS-Mesquite, TX) 6'6-315

Comments: FSU holds a commitment from Solomon Thomas. They lead for Petty. They can pull in Peyton Joseph if they want him. They have gotten visits from Haywood and Rogers. FSU sits in a good spot right now on the OL. Buchanan chose Miami over FSU which is a bit of a surprise.

DE
Javion Hilson: (Cocoa HS-Cocoa, FL) 6-3, 225 (Committed to FSU)
Jared Smith-Thompson HS- (Alabaster, AL) 6'6-240

Off the Board
Alhasssan Iddrissu: (Modesto Christian, Modesto, CA) 6'7-220
Tyon Lee (Pace HS-Milton, FL) 6'4-245
Zion Grady (Enterprise HS-Enterprise, AL) 6-4, 220 (Committed to Ohio State)
Isaiah Gibson (Warner Robins, Warner Robins, GA) 6'4-250 (NEW to the board)
Nick Clayton (Buchholz HS-Gainsville, FL) 6'4-200 (Committed to Wisconsin)

Comments:
Hilson solidified his commitment recently. FSU could have taken Clayton commit. I would not be surprised if they circle back around on him. FSU got Smith on campus. He is a big time prospect. Could Grady still be in play later on?

DT
Myron Charles (Port Charlotte HS-Port Charlotte, FL) 6-4, 290 (Committed to FSU)

Kevin Wynn (Greene County HS) 6-2, 320 (Committed to FSU)

Justus Terry: (Manchester HS-Manchester, GA) 6'5-275

Off the Board
Jalen Wiggins (Rickards HS-Tallahassee, FL) 6-4, 250 (Committed to UF)
Floyd Boucard: (Miami Central HS-Miami, FL) 6'3-300 (Committed to OU)
Jarquez Carter: (Newberry HS-Newberry, FL) 6'2-270 (Committed to Ohio State)

Comments: FSU landed two of it's top targets in Charles and Wynn. Those two commitments allow them to go big game hunting. Wiggins and Justus are the focus of the staff at this time.

LB
Ethan Pritchard: (Seminole HS-Sanford, FL) 6’2-200 (Committed to FSU)

Ty Jackson (Seminole Ridge HS-Loxahatchee, FL) 6'0-200
Tavion Wallace (Wayne County-Jesup, GA) 6'1-210 (Committed to Arkansas)
Tarvos Alford (Vero Beach HS-Vero Beach, FL) 6-2, 210 (Committed to Ohio State)

Off the Board
Zayden Walker (Schley County-Ellaville, GA) 6'2-225 (Committed to Georgia)
Duke Johnson (Dodge County HS-Alabama) 6'1-200 (Committed to Alabama)
Riley Pettijohn (Mckinney HS-Mckinney, TX) 6'2-200 (Committed to Ohio State)
Michael Hastie (Douglas County-Douglasville, GA) 6'3-230 (Committed to WVU)
Gavin Nix (IMG Academy-Bradenton, FL) 6-0, 220 (Committed to Miami)
Zaydrius Rainey-Sale (Bethel HS-Spanaway, WA) 6-2, 220 (Committed to Washington)

Comments:

FSU has a commitment from Pritchard. He is a kid that played some in the secondary. He is going to play linebacker in college. He has some athletic ability to go back into coverage. He also does not mind coming up and playing the run. Tavion Wallace picked Arkansas on July 2.

S
Max Redmon (Cardinal Newman) 6'0-190 (Committed to FSU)

Bryce Fitzgerald (Belen Jesuit) 6'1-175
Jordan Young (Monroe HS-Monroe, NC) 6'0-185

Off the Board
Hylton Stubbs (Mandarin HS-Jacksonville, HS) 6’1-190 (Committed to Miami)
Jadon Blair (Mount Tabor-Winston Salem, NC) 6'4-190
Logonza Hayward (Toombs County-Lyons, GA) 6'1-200 (Commmitted to Tennessee)

Comments: The top four safeties in Florida this year are Redmon, Stubbs, Fitzgerald and Thomas. FSU has a legit shot at three of them. If Stubbs decides to stay in State we feel Florida would be the school he chooses. The Seminoles offered Fitzgerald. He came on campus and liked what FSU has offered. BoBo Wilson was the last Columbus prospect FSU has landed. We expect Redmon to pick FSU after visiting. FSU sits in a great spot for Fitzgerald and Thomas who we see as safeties. A position of concern now looks to be in a good spot.

CB
Gregory Thomas: (American Heritage-Plantation-FL) 6'1-180 (Committed to FSU)

Ladarian Clardy: (Escambia-Pensacola, FL) 6'1-180 (New)
Onis Konanbanny: (Heathwood Hall Episopal, High School)-6'1-180 (NEW) 5/29/2024

Off the Board
Chris McCorkle: (Cardinal Mooney HS-Sarasota) 6'1-170 (Committed to IU)
Chris Ewald: (Chaminade HS-Hollywood, FL) 6’0-160 (Committed to Miami)
Antonio Branch: (Miami Northwestern-Miami, FL) 6’2-170
Jett White: (Miami Edison HS-Miami) 6'2-170 (Committed to Maryland)
Ben Hanks: (Booker T-Washington, Miami, FL) 6’1-160

Comments:
FSU can be selective at CB after bringing it a great class in 2024. Gregory Thomas is down to FSU and Clemson. You could see a commitment from him soon. Jett White is committed to Maryland but FSU has shown interest in the South Florida native. Branch is big, long and athletic. His spring game is next week and coach Randy Shannon will be in attendance. I look for FSU to go after Ben Hanks hard as well. There are options but outside of Thomas none of them are leaning FSU way at this time.

Ath.
None

Off the Board
DJ Pickett: (Zephyrhills HS-Zephyrhills, FL) 6’2-170
Dallas Golden: (Berkeley Prep-Tampa, FL) 6’0-180 (Committed to Notre Dame)
Jershaun Newton: (Clearwater Central Catholic-Clearwater, FL) 6'0-205 (Committed to Illinois)

Comments: Pickett has pretty much dropped FSU off the board. Pickett is no longer considering FSU. He has not taken any visits this spring and the communication between the two parties does not exist.

Football Recruiting ACC spotlight: Georgia Tech leads the way with 17 commits in June

Other than the weeks leading up to National Signing Day in December, there is no busier time in the recruiting calendar now than the month of June. The ACC had 123 commitments last month.

Rivals' Adam Gorney takes a look around the ACC, including the new schools coming in this summer:

Golf FSU grad Morgane Metraux to compete in Olympics

FSU sports information:

Florida State women’s golf All-American Morgane Metraux will make her Olympic debut in Paris as she represents her home country of Switzerland in the upcoming Olympic Games (August 7-10). The decorated Seminole, who completed her career as a two-time All-American, two-time All-NCAA Region, and two-time All-ACC selection, was a Florida State standout from 2015-18.

Metraux is ranked eighth in school history with a 73.18 stroke average in 40 career events and 115 career rounds. She still holds the school record for a three-round tournament score with a 12 under par total of 201 at the 2016 Schooner Fall Classic, and won three individual championships (2016 Schooner Fall Classic, 2017 Florida State Match Up, and 2017 Dickson Invitational) during her four-year Florida State career.

“I’m so excited to become an Olympian,” said Metraux. “It’s an honor to represent my country on the biggest stage. I can’t wait to be there (in Paris).”

Metraux will play in the Paris Olympics after making the decision to skip Tokyo in 2020 to maximize her chances for qualification on the LPGA Tour.

"I am so happy that it worked out this time,” said Metraux. “Representing Switzerland at the world's largest sporting event fills me with great pride. I was so disappointed (four years ago) to make the difficult choice not to go to Tokyo. Requalifying remained a huge goal for me. I am looking forward to this experience, which I imagine will be absolutely incredible."

Metraux qualified as one of two representatives from Switzerland through the Official World Golf rankings (OWGR). The field at the women’s golf competition for the Olympic Games in Paris is limited to the top 60 women and men in the rankings. Metraux is currently ranked 37th in the OWGR.

The Seminole alumnus will compete at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, a course which is just outside of Paris, from Aug. 7-10. The Olympic tournament will consist of four 18-hole stroke-play rounds with the Top-3 finishers in the 60-player field awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.

Metraux becomes the third Florida State women’s golfer to play in the Olympic Games.

Matilda Castren and Kim Metraux (Morgane’s older sister) – made Florida State history as they played in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Seminole pair became the first two golfers in the history of the Seminole program to play in the Olympics. Castren, who finished in a tie for 10th place, represented her home country of Finland. Kim Metraux represented her home country of Switzerland and finished in 54th place.

The 28-year-old Metraux currently plays on the LPGA and Ladies European Tours. In 2021, she won the Island Resort Championship on the Symetra Tour which helped her gain LPGA Tour status. She won the 2022 Ladies Italian Open in 2022 and the Jabra Ladies Open in France in 2024.

During her career as a Seminole, she earned All-America honors during her junior and senior seasons.

Metraux graduated from Florida State University in April of 2018 with a degree in Business Management.

“We are all incredibly happy for Morgane as she makes her Olympic debut in Paris,” said Bond, who has coached all three Seminole Olympians. “Morgane has always been one of the hardest working golfers I’ve coached. She has earned all of the success she has achieved, and we are looking forward to cheering her on in Paris. We’ll be listening for the “Go Noles” cheers when she tees off each day.”

Basketball Recruiting FSU among schools to offer four-star center

Since his all-star performance at the NBPA Top 100 Camp, four-star center Eric Reibe has picked up offers from Florida State, Washington, Vanderbilt and Kentucky and “high interest” from Connecticut, Duke and North Carolina. Makes sense for a 7-footer who averaged 19.7 points a game at the prestigious camp.

Football FSU football showed resolve in 2023 rallies - what does it mean in 2024?

Florida State’s run through the regular season was a perfect 12-0. There were clear challenges, from the heavyweights (LSU and Clemson) to rivals (Miami and Florida) to a few more ACC opponents who weren’t perceived to be as tough in the preseason but indeed were (Boston College, Duke and Pitt).

While we all watched the games closely from week to week, there was one stat that was surprising when mentioned by offensive coordinator Alex Atkins: FSU trailed in the majority of its regular season games. Eight times in 12 games.

“Everybody’s going to come in with selfish ambition, just want to do things on their own,” Atkins told a group of FSU boosters in April while sitting alongside defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and special teams coordinator John Papuchis. “But if we can get that offense to basically want to do everything for their brothers, for their teammates to get that unselfish mentality, because the closest teams win those games.

“That’s what we found out. We had a lot of close games last year, games where we got behind. We had to answer.”
