Golf PGSF FedEx Cup Week 22: The RBC Canadian Open

HGCC-e1526418921386.jpg

The RBC Canadian Open had one of, if not the most thrilling finish to a PGA TOUR event in 2023, with Nick Taylor becoming the first Canadian to win his national open in 69 years, defeated Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff.
Now there is a hearty Canadian contingent looking for even more history, as Canadians haven’t won the tournament in back-to-back years since Albert Murray and Karl Keffer in 1913 and 1914.
The event returns to the venerable Hamilton Golf and Country Club, long ranked as one of the country’s best. It underwent an impressive restoration/renovation project after it hosted the 2019 RBC Canadian Open with Golf Digest naming it the "Best Renovation" of the year in 2023.

This week – the seventh time Hamilton will be hosting the Canadian Open – is the final week for players to earn points in the Aon Swing 5 to nab a spot in the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. It’s also part of the final qualifying series for The Open Championship, with the top three finishers not otherwise exempt earning a spot at Royal Troon this summer.
Here's everything else you need to know as the TOUR returns to Canada.
FIELD NOTES: Nick Taylor returns to defend his title at the RBC Canadian Open after his dramatic victory last year at Toronto’s Oakdale Golf and Country Club. Taylor, who won earlier this season at the WM Phoenix Open, is the country’s top-ranked male golfer. Other Canadian PGA TOUR winners in the field include Taylor Pendrith, Corey Conners, Adam Svensson, Adam Hadwin and Mackenzie Hughes (who is from Hamilton)… Rory McIlroy looks to continue his success at the Canadian Open – and so far this season. McIlroy won the last Canadian Open contested in Hamilton in 2019 by seven shots and won the next edition of the RBC Canadian, in 2022 as well. He finished T9 last year and has won twice already this season on TOUR… Shane Lowry, who finished T2 the last time the RBC Canadian was in Hamilton (behind McIlroy, with whom he won the Zurich Classic) returns to Canada… Lowry and McIlroy’s Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood – who lost in a playoff to Taylor in 2023 – is back along with fellow Europe Ryder Cuppers Robert MacIntyre and Nicolai Højgaard… Other notable names playing in Hamilton include three-time TOUR winner Tom Kim (making his RBC Canadian Open debut), Sahith Theegala, Cam Young and Sam BurnsAdam Scott tees it up at the RBC Canadian Open for the first time since 2003 (also at Hamilton). This is Scott’s just second appearance at the event.
SPONSOR EXEMPTIONS: There will be at least 25 Canadians teeing it up in their home country this week led by International Presidents Cup team captain Mike Weir playing in his 31st RBC Canadian Open – just one back of the most all-time… David Hearn, who was in the final group on Sunday at the Canadian Open in 2015, will be playing in his 20th RBC Canadian Open… Among the other Canadians in on sponsor invites include world travellers Jared du Toit and DP World Tour member Aaron Cockerill, as well as PGA TOUR Americas in-season winners Stu MacDonald and Matt Anderson… PGA TOUR member Michael Gligic – from nearby Burlington, Ontario – will make his seventh appearance at the Canadian Open… There were four regional qualifiers over the last 12 months while defending Canadian amateur champion Ashton McCulloch and mid-amateur standout Kevin Stinson are also in the field… Ryan Palmer and Kelly Kraft round out the sponsor invites.
SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: The next Signature Event on the PGA TOUR schedule is the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday… The RBC Canadian Open is the final event for players to earn FedExCup points and get into the field at the Memorial via the Aon Swing 5… With his win at Colonial, Davis Riley now tops the Aon Swing 5 (climbing 61 spots in the standings thanks to his victory), while Chris Gotterup (the winner in Myrtle Beach) is second… Mac Meissner finished T5 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and moved up eight spots to No. 4, while Pierceson Coody, who also finished T5 moved up a robust 45 spots to No 5… Hayden Buckley (also T5 at Colonial) moved up 49 spots and is just 0.5 points behind Coody for the final spot in the Aon Swing 5… The 10 golfers in the Aon Next 10 remained unchanged after last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge, but Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Jake Knapp swapped spots, with the South African moving up to No. 9 and Knapp falling to No. 10.
COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: After finishing T2 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler remained firmly on top of the stands. Scheffler now has 11 top-10 finishes in 12 starts this season… Collin Morikawa finished fourth in Fort Worth and moved up two spots in the standings from No. 8 to No. 6 while Ludvig Åberg and Byeong Hun An each moved down a spot… An remains the only golfer to be inside the TOUR TOP 10 every week so far this season.
FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 FedExCup points
COURSE: Hamilton Golf and Country Club, par 70, 7,084 yards. The golf course has been completely renovated since the last time it hosted the RBC Canadian Open, with shovels going into the ground not long after the event concluded in 2019. It was a trying effort for Martin Ebert and his team, however, as he was supposed to visit Hamilton a dozen times from the U.K. through the renovation process (a throwback restoration to Harry Colt’s original design from the 1910s) but couldn’t come at all due to the travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, Ebert relied on virtual reality and video calling and finally got to see the finished product in September 2021. The course has 112 yards more length than 2019 and every putting surface and bunker was re-done.
72-HOLE RECORD: 258, Rory McIlroy (2019)
18-HOLE RECORD: 60, Carl Pettersson (third round, 2010 at St. George’s G&CC), Justin Rose (fourth round, 2022 at St. George’s G&CC)
LAST TIME: Nick Taylor’s drought-busting 72-foot eagle putt to defeat Tommy Fleetwood on the fourth playoff hole of the 2023 RBC Canadian Open will go down in Canadian sport history as one of the country’s biggest moments. Taylor, who opened with a 75 but bounced back to make the cut on the number Friday (after a “talking to” from his wife Thursday night, he said), shot weekend rounds of 63-66 to finish tied with Fleetwood at 17-under. The duo went back and forth over the three playoff holes before Taylor had an eagle attempt from long range to win the tournament. When it dropped, pandemonium ensued (including fellow British Columbia native Adam Hadwin getting tackled by an overzealous security guard – in his defense, Hadwin was wearing street clothes and had no credential, and he and the security guard laughed it off quickly) as Taylor became the first Canadian to win his national open since Pat Fletcher in 1964 – although Brooke Henderson won the CPKC Women’s Open in Saskatchewan in 2018. Two-time defending champion Rory McIlroy ended up tied for ninth. He won the Canadian Open the last time it took place at Hamilton, in 2019.

Tight Ends - Spring Offers

FSU returns Kyle Morlock (SR), Brian Courtney (JR), Jackson West (JR), Jerrale Powers (RFR) this season. They added Landen Thomas who is a true freshman. Morlock had 19 catches for 255 yards and no touchdowns in 2023. Courtney has one catch over the prior two seasons. Jackson West has had not recorded a reception and neither has powers. This group has underwhelmed as a group. This upcoming season is huge for these guys as FSU may have to clear out the room some and add some new pieces. FSU was very active this spring offering tight end prospects. We will now take a look at them.

2025 Offers
Andrew Olesh: Southern Lehigh: (PA) 6'5-215 (2025)
He runs well. Looks like a good athlete. You see him also line up at tight end or outside as a receiver. Runs good routes. He gets into and out of his breaks quickly. You watch him and Olesh is a mismatch for the guys he goes against. The biggest question is the competition. He looks like a man amongst boys. The good thing is he dominates and that is what you should be doing.

Brock Schott: Leo HS: (IN) 6'4-215: (Committed to Miami) (2025) on film looks great. I would have to see him in person. You can see his athletic ability on one play. He comes off the edge as a defensive end and jumps up and snatches the ball for an interception and a touchdown. He has great ball skills. He has very good body control. If you based him off film, Schott should be considered for five stars. Forget tight end....He has the potential to be a very good football player no matter where you put him. Committed to Miami but a prospect you keep recruiting.

2026 Offers

Kaiden Protho: Bowdon (GA) 6'6-210 (2026)
- I watched footage of this kid at camps and on film and Protho has a chance to be an ELITE player. He has elite traits. His size (6'6) makes him a major mismatch for opposing defenses. He is someone that has the speed and quickness to wreck a defense. The kid can run by defenders and pull away. He honestly could play receiver. He looks like Calvin Johnson. He seems to have pretty good hands. He is a five star athlete.

Ryder Mix-Lone Star (TX) 6'4-210 (2026): Texas produces tight ends and this year will be no different. Mix runs track so that should tell you what type of athlete he is. He seems like a kid that goes to Michigan and ends up a good football player. You will see him adjust to the football. He can catch the ball over either shoulder. There is a play he blocks one defender, comes off that guy and destroys the next one. You want a tight end that can block and that is what Mix can do. He is not the athlete that Protho is right now but maybe the better overall tight end at this point.

JC Anderson: Mt Zion HS (IL) 6'7-230 (2026): BIG style of tight end. Big body prospect. He seems to have a long stride. Once he gets going, Anderson looks really good. He can get behind a secondary. He is fluid for a big man. He can run whip routes and be effective. Has size and uses it. He will high point the football. His team will run behind him. He seems to block pretty well. Big, physical tight end that could have a very good college career.

Camden Jensen: Heritage HS (CO) 6'6-230 (2026): I lived in Colorado at one time. It is tough to really know how good a kid from this state is. The talent level is not very good. Jensen is a big kid. He will get after it on the football field. He has good hands. He comes out of his stance and blows a defender off the ball. He can find the soft spot of the zone and exploit it. His size is going to cause problems for defenders. He may eventually grow into a tackle in college.

Corbyn Fordham: The Bolles School (FL) 6'4-215 (2026): Believe his father played at FSU. He has had some other family member play at Bolles. He will find the open spot in the defense. He gives his quarterback a reliable target to throw to. Not in the top group of tight ends on this list but still very good. He can run the seam of the defense. He displays good hands. He is someone that can block and seal the edge on run plays. He is a solid 3* possibly 4* player.

Caleb Tafua: Lakewood HS (CA) 6'4-215 (2026): You are seeing FSU spend some time in California. Fafua is a big kid. He is listed at 215 pounds. He looks more like a 230 pound prospect. I have seen many of these types of players at Stanford. He is a good player. Not as high on his film as Protho and Mix. Those two are better athletes. He is a player we expect to have a very good career in college.

Kai Wesley: Orem HS (UT) 6'8-210 (2026): Plays basketball and football. At 6'8, you can understand why he plays basketball. Big kid. Not super fluid. He plays both defensive end and tight end. Raw but you can see why FSU likes him. Not in Protho league as a player. Probably a kid who ends up staying out west.

2027 Offers
Mark Bowman: Mater Dei (CA) 6'5-220 (2027)
the new trend of tight end can line up wide. You will see him line up line up the slot. He also lines up near a tackle on some plays. He is a very good blocking tight end. He can really help out in the run game. This kid is a complete player. He runs well enough. Bowman is not going to blow by defenders. He has enough speed and quickness to get open. There are some better athletes but this kid is going to be a very good player at the next level. He should end up ranked a solid 4 star prospect.

May get offered

Dwayne Wimbley: Westminster Academy: (FL) 6'6-210 (2025):
Former basketball prospect that decided to give football a try. He is new to the game of football. He plays receiver but we project him more as a tight end in college. He has really improved and if FSU wants a second tight end in this year’s class Wimbley maybe an option. He goes up and gets the football. He can high point the ball. He will get bye defenders. He runs solid routes. He is someone that is just coming into his own. Big fan of Wimbley.

Offered in Jan /Earlier
Hollis Davidson: McIntosh: (GA) 6'5-238 (UV: November 11th-2023, Jan 19th (24), April (24), Official Visit (June 21) -
Three un-official visits and will take an official visit in June. I say follow the visits and Davidson has spent plenty of time in Tallahassee. Was committed to Auburn but has since backed off that pledge. Really like this kid’s film. He has a great first step off the ball. Runs like a receiver but has tight end speed. He runs his routes very well. You will see him come off the ball and get into his routes quickly. He is a complete player. He is one of the top tight ends in the country.
Chase Loftin: Millard South: (NE) 6'6-215: (2025): Loftin will line up all over the field. He lines up in the backfield, slot, out wide. He really looks like a man amongst boys in Omaha. He just seems to toy with defenders. Competition is not great but he dominates. You want to see guys with his physical attributes really dominate the competition. He makes some crazy catches. He has good hands. He blocks well enough right now. Would have to see him in person to really evaluate him.

Baseball FSU gamble pays off: Carson Dorsey tosses 8.2 innings in regional rout of Stetson

Call it a gamble. Call it a calculated baseball decision. It worked.

Left-hander Carson Dorsey pitched 8.2 innings, allowing just one earned run, while Max Williams and Daniel Cantu hit home runs as Florida State defeated Stetson 7-2 in the opener of the Tallahassee Regional on Friday afternoon. Moments after Dorsey received a standing ovation, Brennen Oxford struck out the final batter to seal up the win.

James Tibbs drew four walks but also scored three runs as the Seminoles won their first regional game at home since 2017 (FSU went 0-2 in the 2018 regional).

Baseball Live updates: UCF at FSU, 6 p.m. (ESPN+ stream)

The Tallahassee Regional is officially down to two teams. Florida State has taken down Stetson and UCF to advance in the winner's bracket. UCF defeated Alabama on Friday, lost to FSU on Saturday and then eliminated Stetson on Sunday afternoon in a rain-delayed game 5-2.

FSU (44-15) needs to just win one game Sunday night to win the regional and host a Super Regional. The game is still set for 6 p.m. No TV information has been offered, so for the moment it's at minimum on ESPN+.

RHP Conner Whittaker will likely be on the mound for the Seminoles. In our FSU-UCF notebook, Link Jarrett offered his thoughts on Whittaker late Saturday.

We'll have starting lineups, TV information and more updates here in the thread

Football Recruiting FSU Football Camp June 2: Interviews/video with WR Kaiden Prothro and ATH Derrek Cooper. Plus some 2025/2026 guys to keep tabs on.

After attending different satellite camps from around the country, the Florida State coaching staff hosted the first of six camps in the month of June on Sunday. With over a hundred prospects from the 2025-2028 classes in attendance, the athletes took part in combine testing and positional drills. There were a few standout attendees, including four-star athlete Derrek Cooper and four-star TE/WR Kaiden Prothro, who should be back next week for the Elite Camp. @OsceolaPat and myself were at the practice facility today for the camp and below will be our combined notes and videos taken from the afternoon. We will update this thread throughout the rest of the night while we go through our notes.

Football A closer look at FSU's appeal of NIL-related recruiting penalties

Florida State administrators and football coaches decided to accept unprecedented penalties for NIL-related recruiting violations, which were announced in January. But the world of college athletics — specifically the intersection of NIL, court cases and NCAA enforcement — prompted the athletics department to appeal part of its negotiated agreement.

FSU’s appeal was first reported by Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger on May 17, citing a three-page letter sent to the NCAA. A copy of the letter was provided to the Osceola as part of the state’s open records laws.

Baseball UCF-Stetson game went into weather delay in eighth inning, no update yet on how it affects tonight’s FSU game

The afternoon showers have struck again this weekend at the Tallahassee Regional.

With UCF leading Stetson 5-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning of the first game today at Dick Howser Stadium, the game has gone into a weather delay due to fairly heavy rain and expected inclement weather.

The good news is the UCF-Stetson game was moving quickly and is near its conclusion. Additionally, this storm isn’t projected to last too long.

There’s no update at this time about how this delay could affect the start time of FSU’s scheduled 6 p.m. game against the winner of this game in the regional championship.

I’ll share any updates as they are provided.

Baseball How should FSU approach its pitching rotation in this week's NCAA Regional?

With only two extended starters, the FSU baseball team enters this week's NCAA Regional with a fascinating dilemma of how to line up its pitching.

I explored the cases for FSU starting Jamie Arnold Friday, going with No. 2 starter Carson Dorsey vs. Stetson and even starting the regional with a bullpen game.

What do you think FSU should do?

Baseball Notes: Jamie Arnold's immaculate inning, Sunday starter, charting HRs

Quite often, fans go to the ballpark and observe something they’ve never seen before. Saturday night could have been just such an occasion.

Florida State left-hander Jamie Arnold struck out the side in the second inning, getting all three batters swinging. But he did it on the minimum nine pitches.

“In high school I was one pitch away and I got hosed on a call, a fastball,” Arnold said. “And the next pitch I threw the same exact pitch and they called it a strike. So I was salty about that since two years ago.”

Baseball Live Updates: FSU-UCF in Tallahassee Regional winner's bracket game (Saturday at 8 p.m., ESPN+)

With one win in hand, the Florida State baseball team is through into the winner's bracket of the Tallahassee Regional. Next up? A Saturday night (8 p.m. on ESPN+) matchup vs. third-seeded UCF for a spot in the regional championship game.

FSU will turn to its ace, sophomore pitcher Jamie Arnold (10-3, 2.45 ERA) for the winner's bracket game against the in-state opponent. UCF will counter with senior righty Ben Vespi (4-3, 4.44), who has pitched 75 innings for the Knights this season, allowing 75 hits and 27 walks with 71 strikeouts.

FSU and UCF did not play this season, but the Seminoles are 39-9 all-time against the Knights and 27-5 in home games vs. UCF. This will be the first time FSU head coach Link Jarrett has coached against UCF head coach Rich Wallace, his former assistant at both FSU and Notre Dame.

We'll have updates here once the game gets underway at 8 p.m. from what should be a raucous Dick Howser Stadium.

Baseball FSU-UCF game Saturday delayed to 8 p.m. due to weather

After a seamless first day of baseball in the Tallahassee Regional Friday, Saturday’s action has been delayed before it even started.

The Alabama-Stetson elimination game that was supposed to begin at noon Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium will not begin on time, FSU announced.

Just after 1 p.m., FSU announced that the Stetson-Alabama game will begin at 3:30 p.m. and tonight’s FSU-UCF game is slated to start at 8 p.m.

Softball FSU mixes pitchers but Oklahoma proves too tough in Supers

Florida State did more than mix pitches. The Seminoles mixed pitchers.

The strategy worked far better than in a game 1 loss to Oklahoma. But the Sooners still proved too powerful at the plate.

Kasidi Pickering hit a two-run homer and Oklahoma also scored a run on a wild pitch as well as another earlier in the night with the benefit of a wild pitch and a passed ball in a 4-2 win over FSU on Friday night in the Super Regionals.
