Bound to happen

We have been flirting with this “rock bottom” concept for 4 years against the likes of ULM, Samford, and Jax State. Fortunately, the Wake 30-0 loss back in the day is comparable and we dug out of that as a program. Maybe this is the exhale a program needs to perform a full rebuild. Coach MN nor any other coach should wear the weight of the past. Each season and team is a one year experiment. Today I realize this really is a 3-4 year overhaul just like Jimbo had to do. Let’s get to 5-7 dadgummit.

Losers Lose…

Losing is infectious and once a team loses enough it just becomes second nature…they just find new and worse ways to lose. It becomes increasingly harder to break the cycle. Typically a complete change in culture with strong leadership is the only way out…the ultimate question is, does Norvell have what it takes to completely change the culture and have the ability to Lead us into a new age. Only time will tell but after last night it does not look likely.

McElwain²

Our first problem was hiring a McElwain after Jimbo left. Florida hired a McElwain after Urban left, but they realized he was a McElwain and fired him. They proceeded to not rehire another McElwain. Our McElwain was actually worse than Florida's McElwain, so this should be called hiring a Taggart, but Florida started this first! Now, on to our second problem. We fired our McElwain once we saw he was just a McElwain. We were on the same path as Florida, but this is were we make the biggest mistake in this entire saga. We replace a McElwain with a McElwain. That brings us to our third problem. We're now stuck with our second McElwain for who knows how long and it's not going to get better. We still have fans who don't even understand the problem. They're blaming our roster like our roster isn't factors better than Jacksonville State's.

This is simple: Problem = McElwain²

Recruiting is only hope.

How many guys on this team that were recruited in high school would start for over half the teams in ACC (a conference that has been thoroughly embarrassed so far this year)? I hesitate to say maybe Travis Jay just based only on looks and potential. We have zero difference makers from our last 5 classes. Notre Dame looked like crap yesterday and I say we still only have 5 or less guys that would start for them.

In the last 4 years we have gone from losing in the 4th against Samford, to needing a missed PAT against ULM, to behind 14 to Jax State last year, to finally losing. Play with fire too long you always get burned.

There are really only two ways out. We get extremely lucky at QB or we get more talent. I am not happy with a lot of the personnel decisions by Norvell. I actually love that he makes decisions that statistically give us the best shot at winning. Fuller has done nothing to show that he isn’t in over his head. At this point we all just need to hope FSU can get enough lucky breaks this year that the Recruiting can start bringing us back.

This staff, although I haven’t completely given up on them, does not seem capable of winning with less talent. Guys like Fuller, Marve, Dugans have now gone through long periods with zero positives. In 2014 our LBs, OL, and Wrs sucked. We have not had a top half of the ACC caliber group in any of those rooms in over 7 years. If it wasn’t for Ramsey and a handful of games from Derwin I would say the same about the secondary.

We should be due for a lucky break. But if it worked that way Tennessee and Nebraska would have turned it around long ago.

We Can’t Rationalize Last Night

Or at least I can’t. It’s a complete and utter disgrace, and as close to completely unforgivable as it gets. We got walked off by Jax State with guys jogging after their WR taking it to the house. I don’t even care if we beat Wake, Louisville, Syracuse, and UMASS, because we won’t win any of the rest and will be 4-8 with the worst loss in program history that will be used against us forever.

If Fuller Is Retained IDK Anymore

I don't know about you guys but I LIKE Mike Norvell. I love his youth, his enthusiasm. I think he may be in over his head with trying to do too much. Over thinking things with the offense. All that being said. Listen I told you guys the day Lamar Jackson gashed us Charles Kelly needed to go. In fact after what Oregon did to FSU Kelly should have been demoted. I could be totally wrong but to me last night was an OMEN. Either Fuller is that ____ING STUPID or he's on a gator payroll to give up points. There is no way this man can be trusted or taken seriously at this level. Who sends an all out blitz when you know the other team is going to run fly patterns on the last play of the game.

I woke up with a head ache this morning with a head ache blood pressure up thinking. What did or can Norvell say NOT to lose the team? The only thing I can think of running Fuller off. Make an example out of people who keep doing stupid sh*t!!!!!! How can you not? Charles Kelly was the 60 point DC, Fuller is the DC that gave away the Jax State game. How can the kids trust him? If he's kept after the season I'm not sure FSU is serious about winning NCs again. This man is a walking joke.

Stat Bomb – Pro Football Focus grades recap

This is going to be a quick rundown of the PFF grades from the FSU-Notre Dame game. Not sure why, but they weren’t posted until this morning. Normally, we have a full recap up the day after the game.

Overall Team Grades:

Top Mark: Florida State posted an exceptionally high rushing grade of 83.0. Only one other time since the 2017 season has FSU had this high of a run mark vs. an FBS opponent. That was last year against North Carolina.

Low Mark: Pass blocking was still awful coming in with a grade of 40.7. That’s pretty disappointing considering that FSU had a worse pass-blocking grade only twice last season vs. Pittsburgh and NC State.

Odd: The run-blocking grade was also low at 45.3, which is surprising considering FSU rushed for 264 yards and had a top-notch rush grade (83.0).

Passing:

McKenzie Milton – 76.5 passing grade / 77.3 when kept clean and 66.6 when under pressure

Jordan Travis – 57.2 passing grade / 70.3 when kept clean but 45.6 when under pressure

Rushing:

Jashaun Corbin – 85.3 rush grade (his highest ever grade) / 124 yards after contact (8.27 yards av)

Treshaun Ward – 76.4 rush grade / He also accounted for six first down runs.

Lawrance Toafili – 65.9 rush grade

Receiving:

Ja'Khi Douglas played 22 snaps in the game and finished with a team-high receiving grade of 81.0. Interestingly, he was targeted three times and had three receptions on those targets. His 60-yard touchdown also probably helped his grade.

Keyshawn Helton was the other receiver to post above average receiving grades vs. Notre Dame (76.7). He was also perfect catching four passes on four targets finishing with 53 receiving yards. That included a reception on a two-point conversion.

No receiver finished with poor grades but Jashaun Corbin was credited with a dropped pass.

Blocking:

As noted above, it wasn’t a great night for Florida State’s offensive line. On the bright side, a couple linemen did extremely well pass-blocking. Darius Washington (85.4) and Dillan Gibbons (75.7) both finished with excellent marks. However, Robert Scott (45.4) struggled and both centers were awful in pass-blocking according to PFF. It’s not explained but possibly the centers’ grades were docked significantly because of bad snaps.

The line surrendered 13 pressures on 38 quarterback drop-backs. Four of those pressures were attributed to Robert Scott. On the other hand, Darrius Washington did not give up a single pressure during the game.

Run-blocking was lousy across the board. In fact, the only player to finish with a grade higher than 65 was wide receiver Malik McClain (79.6). Every linemen finished with a grade somewhere between 45 and below 60. The top OL in this department was Robert Scott (57.9).

Defense:

Keir Thomas was the top starter with a defensive mark of 68.5, including a 77.2 tackle grade.

Quashon Fuller played just 13 snaps but finished with an excellent grade of 71.9.

Jammie Robinson was the best player in coverage (70.8) while Travis Jay (47.5) struggled giving up a couple touchdown passes.

Sidney Williams (84.1) and Kalen DeLoach (83.7) were the team’s top tacklers according to PFF. DJ Lundy, the other starting LB next to DeLoach, also had a nice start with a 77.9 tackle grade. However, Amari Gainer (49.0) and Stephen Dix (28.7) struggled in this area.

Fabien Lovett (4), Keir Thomas (3), Jermaine Johnson (2), and Robert Cooper (2) led the way in pressures. Overall, FSU pressured Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan 17 times. To compare, last year at Notre Dame FSU’s defense had seven total pressures on Ian Book.

We will have a more comprehensive Stat Bomb next week when we have a normal Saturday game and assuming PFF isn’t 24 hours late posting grades.

Bag man aka NIL gameplan

I’m all for our resources or what’s left of them figuring out how we can mask bag men within the NIL rules.

Have bagmen add shell properties of real estate, car dealerships, etc. start having them pay players to take videos on car lots, show houses.. hire some TikTok Snapchat YouTube Jake Paul crap to show them how it’s done and monetize this market so you can analytically showcase to high school talent we can build a brand for you. We gotta sell put to get talent here because RESULTS won’t cut it because well we simply can’t get it done.
