ANOTHER New Footie Thread

I'm really hopeful Bruce Arena gives some younger keepers a chance this summer. Watching Brad Guzan lately....yeah, we're screwed if Howard gets hurt again.

Discussion at the ATL UTD game last night was would Guzan replace our current keeper, Kann, when he arrives. Hope to hell not; Kann has been wonderful for United thus far with only one stinker game. Guzan stepping in without earning it has clubhouse cancer written all over it.

Real Madrid did the impossible. Beating the LaLiga Barcelona machine, totally insane.

Barca 2 more pks today on offense, and on defense Barcelona sets a euro big league record with 0 pks given up in a season. 0! Total cheating. But Zizou gets it done despite the refs.

Madrid wins title. Love it

Guzan better not take over for Kann at ATL United. What exactly has he done to prove that he is worth taking over? Being the main GK for a relegated Aston Villa last year? Being the main GK for a relegated Middlesborough this year?

Personally I have never thought he was good enough to be the main Keeper for the USMNT, yet he was. Someone likes him and thinks he is a top notch keeper, I just don't see it.

On another subject, I still say Wenger Out. The Arsenal need to rip the band-aid off and move on.

Arsene must go imho.

Btw, evertons final effort just like the last 2 months was embarrassing. Barkley and lukaku bye, not missed

I take solace in looking forward to playing some different European teams I never see
on TV; no, they aren't heavyweights, but they are like good middle majors here in the US.
Variety is the spice of life, and all that.

I do hope Wenger is shown the door; he's lost the team, on the pitch and in the locker room,
and a top level manager needs to be found to keep Sanchez happy and in the Emirates. With the
powerhouse Spurs are building, and Chelsea's continued resurgence, The Arsenal is on the verge
of being an afterthought.

Verge? ;)

Reports of Arsenal's demise ae being greatly exaggerated.

Let's just wait and see what happens.

I think they need to go the Liverpool path and tear it all down. I think they'll still be in and around the top 4 every year though (unlike Liverpool) so that when the team in truly ready in about 2-3 years they should be able to compete for the PL again.

It would probably help the Gunners if Kroenke does sell his stake in the club to the Russian minority owner. I'm sure the new owner would try to move the progress of the club along quickly the way United did this summer by bringing in guys that they'd have no shot at without UCL normally by paying over the odds in both salary (for the player) and transfer fees (to the club).

TBF, Pogba didn't get over the odds transfer fee b/c that was the amt it was going to be regardlesss of where he ended up (within ~ €5M).

Not sure who those players would be, maybe Mbappe? Once you get that piece to build around it's a much easier transition. With Liverpool, they probably thought Suarez was going to be that piece, it turned out to be Coutinho.

Well, Arsenal has a chance to garner some silverware in the short term if they can somehow knock off my mighty Blues in Wembley Saturday. This was already going to be a huge spectacle, and in light of the tragic events that occurred in England a couple of days ago, the security and emotions are going to both be through the roof.

I don't think we have a chance not to give up 3 goals or more.

Backline of Holding, Mertesacker, Monreal...with Gibbs and a limping Ox at the wingbacks = big scoring opps for Chelsea.

I firmly expect to be humiliated in this match due to all the injuries in the back.

Gibbs is actually a doubt for the game due to a thigh injury. On top of it, Mustafi is still experiencing concussion symptoms from his concussion a couple weeks ago, so he is doubtful as well.

So, unless Ox is deployed on the left side with Bellerin on the right, Arsenal will most likely have to revert back to a back 4 formation with Bellerin, Per, Holding, Monreal. Not sure who the reserves will be, but my guess is Coquelin would be a potential fill in in the back if necessary since he has played there before under Wenger.

If Arse wins, how often has it happened where the top 4 teams only combined for 1 trophy?

not sure overall, but can recall in 2013 when Swansea won the (now) EFL Cup and Wigan won the FA Cup.

Chelsea finished 3rd in the league but won the Europa after getting knocked out of the CL during the group stage.

Trying again,

2012:

EPL - City
FA Cup and UCL - Chelsea (6th in EPL)
EFL Cup - Liverpool (8th in EPL)
Europa - Athletico Madrid

Only time I can think of in the last 15 or so years.

Gibbs isn't listed anywhere on the injury team news.

Gabriel is definitely out, and as of yesterday, Mustafi still hadn't practiced, so he must be out today as well, or at best on the bench. Could see some strange names in the reserves today.

Ever heard of any of these guys?

Cohen Bramall

Only one I know is Bramall, and that's only b/c it was news that we bought him from a League Two (or possibly lower than that) side.

Back 4 it could be. Mertesacker is going to get abused though. I could see him picking up a red card due to an extremely late tackle on Hazard or Willian.

I think Arsenal will have to play a back four. For them to win today, they are going to need some luck. Chelsea will have a lot of shots on goal.

I expect to lose, and poorly, Bayern Munich poorly. Anticipate the boo birds in The Arsenal section having a field day. Won't be surprised to see things thrown at Wenger. This will be very, very ugly.

Never seen so many Lou Holtz's in one place. You Gunners have no chance at all.

Reports SAY he'll sign tomorrow.

Reports also say, he'll have a Director of Football from now on, something AW said he will never accept.

I think the board meeting could actually be pretty interesting. I'm reserving judgment until I read the official account(s) on Arsenal.com

Arsenal is worth a lot of money, have no debt, have the fourth highest wage scale in England, but only made 25 million pounds. Where does all the money go?

Every year Kroenke takes money out as a "Consulting Fee", so that comes directly off the bottom line.

As much as I want #WengerOut, I am pretty much full on-board the #KroenkeOut train as well.

Ushimov tried.

Offered him 1.3 Billion pounds for Kroenke's stake, to which Silent Stan said, "my shares aren't now, nor have they ever been for sale."

If only Ushimov could gain control of the club...

From my understanding a lot of people don't like Usmanov either. It is thought that he would increase spending and do his best to bring Arsenal to the top of EPL, but people aren't very fond of him. It still boggles my mind that the guy owns about 30% of the club but he doesn't have a seat on the Board or any say as to what goes on at the club.

I even read somewhere that part of the deal when Kroenke became the majority shareholder he wouldn't ever allow Usmanov a seat on the Board or sell to him. I don't know if any of that is accurate or not, but it was an interesting read.

Personally I am still waiting on the clock to tick down to 2020 because that is supposedly when Aliko Dangote wants to purchase the club. He has been an Arsenal fan and wants to get the club to the top, not just make money off it.

Arsenal books are messy from what i can find.
Revenue last year of 351 million pounds is exceptional.
200 mill on player wages alone is not, but still huge difference. Then overhead, infrastructure etc....

The stadium debt is tricky and I don't get it, but estimates range from 200-250 mill left on Emirates, they are a long way from paid off.

If Arsenal dont cut wages and don't return directly to champions league, could be in big trouble in a few years.

AW is staying. It's official now. 2 more years of mediocrity.

As great as I was feeling after winning the FA Cup, I'm equally bummed today.
