Chip Kelly is reportedly uf's new HC.

Dude, FL produces more D1 talent than CA with half the population.
Actually they produce almost exactly the same number. Florida is much higher per capita but not in total number.
I would also think there is much more competition for the Florida players due to the fact that two of the P5 conferences are in the region looking to poach players.

Article in today's Times-Union about uf "moving on" from Chip Kelly. A funny line in that article:

"While UCLA doesn't have uf's tradition or SEC profile, it does offer a better fit for Kelly"

What tradition do the Gators have? Not being relevant prior to the arrival of Steve Spurrier? His coaching arrival.

So Chip Kelly turned them down, yet Florida is saying they never offered and are moving on. Hilarious! He was their 1st choice and they wanted him badly. If he flips back to them, i bet the spin is it was neverbin doubt, we knew we were the best program and encoraged him to look at other offers because we are confident this job is the best available.

It is comical to watch teams and fan bases crash and burn chasing their dream coaches. Think the gates, LSU, Tenn, NC State and others over the years. I just hope FSU does not get into this predicament. Careful what you wish for...

I've come to believe there are only a few elite coaches in college and pro football. The rest are just a mix of crappy coaches who will never amount to anything, and good (not great) coaches who get lucky with some generational talent, favorable schedules and injury-free seasons.

They won one title under Galen Hall, which was promptly taken away for infractions, in how many decades prior to Spurrier? Not much tradition.
Won’t play the caines, got smoked in their first big out of conference matchup (except the Noles) in decades, how are they more relevant nationally than UCLA in national opinions?

As I recall, Will Muschamp and Shark Boy were not who the gates first or even second wanted either. Funny how A-list named talent keeps rejecting this hotbed of football tradition over and over again through the years, especially in such an amazing and enlightened city as Gainesville.

What I find even funnier is that uf hasn't learned to keep their searches quiet. Nothing like being very publically rejected time after time.

Yep and they’re supposedly meeting with Frostie in Orlando on Sunday or late tonight. So when he spurns them to stay at UCF or go to his alma mater at Nebraska they’re going to look really stupid going to Mullen and saying “You were our first choice all along, why don’t you leave that cushy job at Miss State where if you win a couple games over 500 you’re a saint and come to our meatgrinder.”

In fairness, is it UF talking or the agent leaking to create a bidding war?
It's uf. Former AD Foley was famously rejected by Shanahan and Stoops among others. This year, the son of the president of their boosters tweeted that uf was finalizing the contract with Kelly and he would be named the next day. These are self inflicted wounds.

He's gone to UCLA per espn and local ucla reports. I guess that's a bad thing cus logic here is that he's not all that and a 'cheater'

“UCLA has reached an agreement to hire former Oregon coach Chip Kelly, the Bruins’ top choice to replace Jim Mora.

School officials are expected to formally announce the hiring Saturday morning and introduce Kelly during a news conference on campus early next week. The agreement was confirmed by sources with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity because the deal had not been made public. Terms of Kelly’s contract were not immediately known.”

Every Gator fan now

You're right, why on earth would I ever give UF the benefit of the doubt? Screw 'em! Go Noles!!!

Would much rather uf get Kelly than Frost. IMO Frost is young, doing good things and will identify well with recruits. Oh well you can't worry about other teams do; we just need to handle Nole business.

I don’t think they’re getting Frost either. Nebraska just fired Riley and is doing a full court press on him as we speak AND who knows, if the committee is good to UCF and has them top 10 this year he might come back to see if he can be the first nonpower 5 to crack the playoffs. But my money is on Nebraska.

I don’t even think Mullen will go there as the Option #3, his wife has been public about absolutely hating Gainesville and Gator fans.

So it’s option 4, 5 or 6, Norville, Taggart or Charlie Strong.

I always liked Mullen. Seemed like a sharp guy.

Dan Mullen is a perfectly fine third choice for head ball coach. Although I would have backed that money up for Willie Taggart instead. He’s on pace to get the second best recruiting class next year....to Oregon a school that I doubt finished in the top 15 ever.

They did several times. The season's not over and Chip is in Cali now. We'll see if that changes anything on the recruiting trail.

Mullen is a good hire.

UT running off Schiano over Twitter is an interesting, mob tactic. Hope they end up with a high school football coach.

Dan Mullen was brave enough to suspend a guy who knocked out a girl for a whole game. He was also the first person Cam’s dad thought of to approach about pay-for-play. He can bring Hevesy with him and UF can have the Aaron Hernandez recruiting team back on campus.

Mullen is a good hire.

So three Oregon had a recruiting class barely in the Top 15 and another that was BARELY in single digits. That’s not exactly FSU level of recruiting.

Over the last 18 years (oldest I could find, I used another service for the first two years and Rivals for the remaining 15 as that’s all I could quickly find) Oregon’s recruiting classes were ranked:

2000 44th
2001 34th
2002 48th
2003 26th
2004 13th
2005 28th
2006 49th
2007 11th
2008 19th
2009 32nd
2010 13th
2011 9th

2012 16th
2013 22nd
2014 26th
2015 17th
2016 25th
2017 18th

So Taggart getting a top 5 class at Oregon is huge.

On another subject saying Mullen is a good hire depends on what you mean by good. Does he have a proven track record like Chip Kelly, Scott Frost and Willie Taggart? Nope. Only one season, ONE in his 9 years at Miss State did he have a winning record in conference. Miss State doesn’t even play a Bama schedule of one decent OOC and the rest poop, they always schedule four free gimmes. In their best season where they finished 10-3, they played 5 teams that were ranked at the end and they finished 2-3. Last year, they finished 6-7 but those six wins were 3 gimmes (they lost to their fourth gimme South Alabama) and then beat 3 teams in the SEC.

I realize we’re grading Mullen on a Miss State curve but he’s had only one decent season considering he’s gifted 4 wins (usually).

Kelly likes the left coast. Mullen will be a better fit in Gainesville. Mullen will do a good job if he can get some discipline back in the program.

Mullen's actually a good hire for them. I'm convinced he was the brains behind a lot of their success with Urban. That said, he fits in perfectly with their culture of cheating and letting criminals run wild on campus.

So, we agree, you were quantifiably incorrect? That terrible recruit ranking list really hurt Oregon against FSU.

Taggart doesn't have a Top 5 class yet. I suspect Kelly going to UCLA will affect his final class rankings. Oregon is a cool program: Nike Money; Great Atmosphere; Hot Cheerleaders. I suspect he'll be able to recruit there.

Yes, while Mullen was recruiting and coaching in the SEC at a small school in a small state playing LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Taggart was racking up power wins against the murders row of teams listed below and, of course, that one bowl win in four years.

Northern Illinois Huskies
East Carolina Pirates (HC)
UConn Huskies
Memphis Tigers
Cincinnati Bearcats
Western Carolina Catamounts
Temple Owls
UCF Knights

Go Ducks!

So apparently the Gators are paying their third choice (Dan Mullen) almost twice what UCLA paid to get their first choice (Chip Kelly). LOL!!!!!!!!
Ah yes, Mullen, the guy who had just told Miss St nation that he loved it there and didn't want to leave. Which is eggzactly what Nole fans want Jimbo to tell us...

I think Mullen will likely get better treatment for his osteoporosis in Hogtown than what he's been receiving in Starkville.

1st, 2nd or 3rd choice whatever, I think it's a pretty decent hire.

Dan Mullen on coaching at UF: (start at 215 if link doesn't. Also heard a sound bite from Ms. Megan on not wanting to be there and how bad the fans had become, so bad that she had to drive to Orlando to grocery shop...
